My phone is usually able to hold a charge for 20+ hours. However, recently I've noticed that the phone will randomly get hot sometimes (40+ degrees Celsius) and the battery will drain from 100% to 0% in less than 2 hours (in standby mode). This started happening fairly recently (as far as I can remember, it didn't do this until I upgraded to Lollipop a few weeks ago). HOWEVER, my sister (with the same phone) is having the same issue on KitKat.
I've downloaded all the battery analysis software (GSAM, Better Battery Stats, Wakelock Detector) but they all tell me I need to be rooted in order to receive any meaningful data.
Here is my question, should I root my phone and diagnose/fix the issue myself, or should I return it to my carrier (it is still under warranty)?
I really don't want to return it because it takes a few weeks to get back, but at the same time, rooting will void my warranty.
What are the chances this is a hardware issue and not a software one? If it's possible that the issue is hardware-related, I will just return it (although I'd really like to avoid that scenario).
Some diagnostics I do have:
- The phone heats up to 40+ degrees celsius when it starts draining
- GSAM says that Android Kernel and Android OS are to blame for the discharge
- It says that wake hold is responsible for only a small percentage of the discharge (I'm not sure if that is accurate)
- Turning off wifi does not help
- Going into airplane mode does not help
- The phone is only about 6 months old
