My thoughts on Samsung's change of direction with the S6

Hi all. I have been with Android only for about 8 months now with a Galaxy S5 in Australia. But I have been visiting forums and getting a general feel about Samsung, Google and Android. I do however have some radical thoughts about the Galaxy S6.

I am sure this has been said countless times, but I am convinced the new S6 is a step in the Apple direction.
The embedded battery, no micro SD card, all in one build, the similar external design and the 3 hard drive choices and prices.

To me, this is a HUGE mistake. Whenever I Google sales of the new device, it seems apparent that the new S6 is either on par only with the S5 or in fact selling slightly less. And whilst I am not a longtime Android user, I am very familiar with the mindset of Apple fans, as my own wife, all my inlaws and all my work collegues are Apple.

I do know that when the majority of people start using Apple, they are sold out. Nothing will convince them to change. I am so trying not to be derogatory and use the term "isheep". Samsung are never going to win trying to beat Apple at their game and trying to win users from Apple. Samsung need to differentiate themselves completely with unique and different features. There is a perception that if a phone is priced like an iphone and looks like an iphone, then there is no incentive to get it over an iphone.

What would I have done differently with the new S6?

Make a more premium back that is removable. Something like carbon fibre. And keep the removable battery. And keep the SD card support. A phone does not have to be all aluminium to be attractive. There are plenty of materials that look attractive, don't block reception, allow wireless charging and allow removability. Just a bit of thinking outside the box.

Not made the phone thinner. In fact, I would have made it a tiny bit thicker than the outgoing S5. Honestly, no one cares for phones that slim. And I have heard a lot of gripes about how hard it is to pick up off a table when it is too slim. In fact, I got a wireless charging back for my S5 and I love how it is a bit meatier in feel and easy to pick up. What I would have done is put a lot of time and effort in making the largest battery possible. Something Apple cannot compete with. Say at least 3000mah but something like 3200mah. A large battery and long performance time is a HUGE selling point. I guarantee you this: Not a single person would gripe over a phone being a bit thicker if the battery was signficantly larger. Absolutely guarantee that.

Not bothered with QHD display. Honestly, show me a single Galaxy S5 user or HTC M8 user who would even remotely suggest more pixels. No one even notices and I wonder how many S6 users are out there who don't even realise their phone is QHD. The QHD technology has sapped massive amounts of time and resources in development. As in the paragraph above, that could have gone into squeezing the biggest battery possible.

Let's be honest, Samsung like to copy and they should have copied Sony phones with their waterproofing without flaps. Oh, and whilst on copying, copy the excellent front facing speakers like HTC.

The new 8 core processor is a big plus obviously. But imagine the new S6 with it's much better camera with the same high quality FHD display as the S5, a really big say 3200mah removable battery, SD card, waterproofing without flaps and class leading front facing speakers. And then throw in something totally unique to Samsung so it's not all about copying. Something like an inbuilt pixel saver that can change your display from FHD to basic HD or less for ultimate battery saving. And perhaps something like fingerprint reader from pressing down ANYWHERE on the screen, not just a designated area on the bottom. Now that would be a true competitor to the iphone without tryiing to be an iphone.

I do honestly believe Samsung have been listening to the wrong people and the sales of this new S6 show it.

P.S. The back of the S6 looks HORRID for 2 reasons. The couple of S6's I have seen are littered with grubby, dirty fingerprints. You cannot keep that back clean. I far more prefer my plastic back of my S5. Honestly. And the asymmetrical back just looks odd. Not appealing at all. Again, I much prefer the flash and HR monitor directly under the camera lens of my S5 rather than oddly to the side.

Wow, what a great write up. I've had virtually all the same thoughts. I've had GS3, GS4, and presently
a GS5. My company will buy me an S6 tomorrow if I want one, but I can't convince myself to get one. I don't want an iPhone. (I already use an iPad because I support IOS users). By trying to be more like Apple, Samsung is losing what differentiates them.

I've had some HTC phones in the past. It may be time to look at them again. I don't know who Samsung is listening to, but it's not their customers.

Samsung did a lot of great things with the S6, the terrific camera, the high speed storage memory, 3GB of ram, louder audio, etc. However, the major screw up was using an undersized battery then making it non-removable. If they wont go back to a replaceable battery design then I am leaving Samsung for LG. If you live in a weak cellular service area then the phone burns through the battery trying to stay in contact with the distant cell towers.

I can vouch for the battery burn while searching for a cell signal. It's rough. Really rough.

Great writeup! I recently bought a Galaxy S5 after tons of research. It was a tough choice, but I ultimately picked it over the S6 because of the Micro SD card and the removable battery. Those are just worth more than the improvements they've made to other features. I like your ideas for the direction they should focus on. Thanks.

With the possible exception of the Note5 (we don't know yet) Samsung and most other manufacturers are moving away from removable batteries. LG is the lone major manufacturer still doing it in a flagship device. For better or worse, a majority of people don't care one bit. The people who frequent forums are generally not average users. Personally, I think a removable battery is nice, but it's not a deal breaker (I would have put a larger battery in the S6 though imo). In regards to the SD slot, there's three factors:

1. The average smartphone user doesn't care and the percentage of users that do care is decreasing. You can't cater solely to a shrinking market

2. The internal storage on the S6 is noticeably faster than the fastest micro SD cards on the market

3. This is the greedy one. They can charge more for increased internal storage. I went with the 64GB option, but I do think the $100 per increment is too high. At least they didn't pull an Apple and offer a 16GB version. 16GB has no business in a flagship or even mid range phone. My last phone had 16GB with no slot and that was a huge issue for me.

Coming from a 1080p display on my previous device, which looked pretty good already, the QHD screen is a plus to me. People say you can't tell the difference but I disagree. The screen on the S6 is the best of any smartphone currently available.

That's just my two cents.

Absolutely agree with most of these points- ESPECIALLY battery too small ( strike one) and not removable ( strike two).
IF S6 had been only one millimeter thicker - it could have a 3300 to 3500 Mah Battery.
At 3/4 millimeter thicker could probably be 3100 to 3300 Mah Battery.

One millimeter does not affect ergonomics- the S6 is a casualty of the ridiculous
"Thinness Race" to a 5 or 6 millimeter thin Phone - why?

Reviewers often list the "Thinness" as a key primary spec in the first few lines of the Review- ridiculous- equating this with "Premium" and also who cares if a Phone is 4 ounces or 6 ounces in weight?
So we get these "Thin" Phones and the Camera sticks out the back anyway..by 2 millimeters.
IF you wear a size 8 shoe but your toe sticks out 1 inch- you really wear a size 11 shoe .
A graphite removable back with recessed screws can be nice for removable battery.
If not removable- make it BIG.
S6 Pro at 7.8 mm thick with 3300 Mah Battery would be great- but just anger S6 owners.
Maybe a S6 Active WITHOUT the ugly push buttons and no Armor called S6 Lifestyle etc. not exclusive...will happen ...or a Note 5 Compact ...probably not.
So maybe Galaxy S7 will get this straight.
All the CPU Power is great and so is Camera...but struggling with Battery is not good for Power Users or Pros who work with or on Phone/Pocket Computer.
Potentially great but flawed.

Unless samsung brings back the removable battery, my GS4 will be the last samsung I own. With the screen on all the time in the car and on the boat (GPS, navigation, Bluetooth, etc) on all the time, and being in fringe areas causing the phone to always be searching (seems to use far more battery power), I blow through a charge in no time. I can't be a wall hugger with my active lifestyle.

The only route I see is the LG G4, unless the GS7 brings back the removable battery.

Usually I sell my phones after I upgrade. I think I will hold on to this GS4 'just in case'

I've been using the S6 for about 2 months now. 32GB is working out fine, I don't store too much big stuff on my phone. Battery life is noticeably less than the S5 was, but I am managing to get through the day. If I plan to be out in the evening, I'll recharge. I'll say this, it does charge pretty quickly.

I keep it cased, so I don't really see the phone case itself, but regardless, I don't like the "iPhone-like" design.
It's been a mostly positive phone experience so far.

I agree with most of the users above. I wish the battery would have been bigger even if the phone would have been slightly less think and weighed slightly more. I also wish the back of the phone would have been of a material less fragile. I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S3 for the Samsung Galaxy S3 to have a better camera and higher resolution picture. I am also upset that I can't seem to turn on the shutter sound now that it was turned off during the last software upgrade.

I fully agree with the OP on all points.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with those saying that if Samsung doesn't change their ways that they will move to a different brand - I have already decided this will be my last Samsung.

And making a small battery charge quickly is hardly an achievement.

Even is Samsung did *everything* recommended above, I would still be extremely reluctant to buy from a company that has slapped me in the face the way this S6 has. Maybe I'm the only one willing to admit it online but I'm sure there are many others who, like me, bought a new Samsung without asking questions, just presuming it would be as good or better than previous models.

Somehow I entirely missed that they were now making Samsung iPhones.

And I really don't care that OTHER companies are also stiffing us with built-in shortened lifespans by preventing us from fitting new batteries later, when the ori' won't hold a charge. The fact remains Samsung has done this to me, and I take it personally!

My next phone will be whichever is waterproof, with a decent camera, SD card, replaceable battery and good battery life. If that means some obscure Chinese brand, for 1/4 the price of a Samsung, then so be it.

I now have ZERO brand loyalty to Samsung, as they obviously have worse than zero loyalty to me as a customer.

Forgot I posted to this thread. ... update... I DID buy an LG G4 to replace my Galaxy S4...

Got to say the camera on the LG G4 ROCKS. Its incredible...However.. I am sure it was me, or the combination of Apps on the phone....but the rest of the device itself sucked. It was slow, froze often, and required several reboots during the day. Again, I am 95% sure it was me, or something I did....LG and AT+T couldnt figure it out...So it got returned, and I am back with my S4, and couldn't be happier...

I think we should hold onto our S4/5 for when the rest of the companies join samsung/apple with the non-removable battery...

I really wanted to upgrade to a new phone, but the G4 I got had issues.

My spidey sense says all/most new phones will not have user replaceable battery/memory..so I think we have to get used to the fact we all will own ILD (iPone Like Device) soon!!

Well I was sniffing around the Sony Xperia line, as waterproof and SD card - but also non-removable battery?

On the other hand it has higher capacity (3100) and reportedly lasts for 2 days, unlike my Sh*t6, which often doesn't make it one full day. Twice this week in fact.
