Not enough space in device storage, delete some files and try again

I only use my S4 (16GB) generally for e-mails and surfing with no great downloads. Today when accessing my e-mails I had the dialogue box “Not enough space in device storage, delete some files and try again”.

Storage shows System memory 6.75GB, Used space 5.55GB, cached data 1.91GB and miscellaneous data 0.97GB – available space 460MB.

I deleted two or three apps that I do not really need thereby giving me 836MB available space. I was then able to download e-mails OK.

Question: What are the steps required/what should I do to prevent this occurring again?

When CCleaner first came out for PC's a long time ago I was very apprehensive about its use, but now just let it do its job without any qualms.

Are there any buts with using Android cache cleaners?

I use Ccleaner on my aging laptop and swear by it, however I'm dubious about using any sort of such cleaner on Android. Most cone with RAM cleaners and other useless and potentially performance damaging cruft. Android treats RAM very differently to Windows. An app that cleans cache(s) - there are more than one, only would be OK, but you can do it yourself from Application manager, and a file manager. A bit tedious doing it manually, but it is easy enough.

You've got almost 2GB in your cache, so it would good first choice to try.

But you really DON'T need an app for clearing your cache, if you know (or can/want to learn how to do it manually). I generally avoid installing an app that can mess around with my stored files, especially if it's something I can do manually.

...that's how I do it. Do you know how to do that? If not, there are probably plenty of help articles on how to clear your cache using your device's Application Manager.

If so, I would start by clearing the cache for your internet browser(s). Also YouTube and any app that temporarily downloads a lot of pictures or graphics. For example I have the WeatherChannel app & the TV Guide app, and they're pretty greedy the cache memory.

I don't know for sure about your second question of how to "prevent it from occurring again".

Unless you mean something like setting up an alert if you're running low on space (i.e. to alert you Before you get stuck all of a sudden not having enough space left). I assume there's some way to do that but I've never looked into it.

For some internet browser apps (and maybe others types of apps) you can adjust the storage limit for the app's cache. When you reach the limit, the app just clears out the oldest cache files to make room for the new ones. The instructions for how to do this depend on what browser you're using. You could do a search for "set cache limit" plus the name of your browser app.

Of course, the best way to prevent this from happening again, at least for a while, is to get an SD card with more memory... but you probably already know that. :)
