Nexus 6 HotSpot On MetroPcs

OK, my wife and I are on MetroPCS (sorry, I just realized that I did forget to mention that). Like I said, she's using the Fire Phone and is able to tether on LTE. She didn't change any thing in settings or root out anything. She never had to go modify using SQL whatever. She just popped in the SIM, we got her registered and she had data and the capability to tether.

Edit: I would think that the N6 or 5 should be able to just work. I've read some of the guys using the OnePlus One tether as well. I don't know if they had to modify.

i bought Nexus when it came out straight from Google Playstore! From November of 2015 to May of 2016 i was able to tether without any modification on T-Mobile. But when i jumped to MetroPCS $60 unlimited back in may 2016 hotspot was $5 extra feature so knew my plan did not allow tether but a few week ago MetroPCS decided to included hotspot feature at no additional cost.. when i discovered it i quickly found out that hotspot isn't working but as i mentioned yesterday i discovered that when i force N5 to use 3G(HSPA+) Hotspot works like a charm!

This can be fixed permanently using the following procedure (UPDATE: no root required):

  1. Enable developer mode (Go to Settings -> About phone, and click on the build number until the developer mode is enabled).
  2. Enable USB debugging under Settings -> Developer options
  3. Connect the device with a USB cable to a computer with the Android SDK platform tools installed
  4. Start an adb shell: adb shell
  5. In the adb shell, run this command: settings put global tether_dun_required 0

i want to try this method but i have no idea what to do?

1 and 2 i've done

number 3,4,5 is where i got lost, it says Android SDK? i've downloaded and installed "Android Studio" and i also was forced to install "Java Development Kit"

So far i see this what's next?

You have to look for system.setting (com.android.provider.settings) settings.data.bs /global

Thanks Krlypumaa,
I finally manage to get the tether to work on my rooted nexus 6 using the long information you provided .
For some reason "tether_dun_required" was not saving in SQLite Master when I typed it

But now I wondering if changing the IPv6 to IPv4 will make the LTE
slower or it won't make a differences at all

and also since my phone is rooted
If I wanted to flash a new version of
Lollipop will it delete my settings for tether and have to start all over again

You need to use sqlite master pro for it to stick... But eventually will change cause the .rc script will rewrite the tweak.
No by changing the IPv doesn't change the speed of LTE thats only for market signal to connection capabilities. You can try setting it ipv4/ipv6 ( both) to see if tether will work?

I am currently running the Nexus 5 on metro pcs the way you get the hotspot to work with on a phone that is not a MetroPCS branded phone is you call and connect it and when they ask you if it is a metropcs phone you tell them yes therefore they will give your phone all the permissions that a regular metropcs phone will have been your hotspot will run my phone ran for over 3 months with unlimited hotspot just showing up as regular data use then they caught on but I have the $60 plan so I received 6 gigabytes of data free every month you do not have to be rooted to do this this will work with any unbranded phone that is running MetroPCS but you must call in if you take it into the store they will put in the computer that it is not a metropcs phone therefore you will have to downgrade to the $50 plan so you can buy hotspot that's how it works with Metro

Ok so I have a Nexus 6 with the $60 unlimited data plan from metro pcs
which includes 6GB of mobile hotspot.

But when I have the hotspot set to enable on my nexus 6 my laptop
isn't getting internet access from my phone

Should my Nexus 6 be rooted in order for my hotspot to work
or
Should I call metro pcs

I have a Nexus 5 and a Nexus 6, my Nexus 5 has been on Metro PcS for almost a year. When I first started service on it they didn't offer the tehering plan, yet my hotspot still worked unlimited as well because it used my phone data which is unlimited. I was using close to 300gb a month since that was my means for WiFi at my house. For the past month. They have began to limit my tethering to the 6 gb a month which really sucks compared to what I was getting. I haven't found any workaround to prevent the tehering limit as of yet. This worked the same with my Nexus 6 when it was on Metro also. I think they've upgraded how they monitor tethering for all phones. I think that if your phone wasn't an official T-Mobile or Metro branded phone then you could get away with this loophole. I guess those days are gone now..

This didn't work with my Nexus 6. I tried. They did reset my data usage though, which I didn't realize until I checked it yesterday and saw I had only used 2 GB, lol.

I ended up having to edit the build prop and add the notethering=false line. That fixed it.

Hey in use a Google edition don't with a 3rd party app from the play store and since metro did not put overlay on your phone they don't know its being used just try a free WiFi app from the Google store.

Sorry typos I meant I use a Google edition phone from Sony and since there is no overlay from metro the will not know you are tethering cause now I think they charge $5.00 to tether now so go to the play store a down load a thiry party app for free it work perfect.

That is not correct. Varying amounts of hotspot data allotment are available based on your standard plan. Also, as you can tell from the first 43 posts, it is not as simple as downloading a third party app. Whether or not you have a Metro branded phone or a BYOD phone, Metro is able to identify tethering based off of the data itself. The Metro "overlay" is not what is used to determine if you are tethering and how much you are tethering.

Im late to this party. But a Nexus 6 closeout from BestBuy - unbranded, unlocked. Moved a family member from the Tmobile $30 /5GB plan to Sprint's new $40 /10GB Unlimited plan (Cut your bill in half)
On Tmobile (Tmobile sim), the built-in tethering USB menu, worked no prob, stock unrooted.
Moved to Sprint, they installed their UICC card, activated. Same USB tethering built in, works, unrooted.

I avoided Metro, just from this thread. Im not going to do a mnvo's work for them. Either tethering is included, and works, or not.
McDonalds doesn't make you jump behind the counter to cook your own burger, then pay them. Right?

I have had my Nexus 5 and 6 on Metro for over 2 years no. When I first signed up the Rep told me my Nexus phone wasn't eligible for hotspot. My phone was already rooted and immediacy after I had the phone activated I tried the native hotspot feature. Sure enough it worked and without any throttling or speed capping. I have also tried it before when my phone wasn't rooted and the internet thru the hotspot had no data access. Once I rooted it the internet worked fine again. I usually change my network to 3G which includes the H+/which is equal to 4G speed (not LTE).

Make sure you are rooted, and change your network setting to 3G, the speed should be plenty fast for streaming Hulu Netflix, PC web, etc. I use all my channels on my Roku fine. I also use the Foxfi app which seems to make the connect smoother.

If you do have issues dont call Metro customer service. They aren't trained in this at all especially with Nexus phones.

Yeah, I have no problems with hotspot on my N5X, or my wife's Amazon Fire Phone; both on Metro's $40 plan. We don't do a lot of tethering, but we haven't encountered any problems.
