I owned the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Note 4 and loved both. Similar to the S6/Edge, the Galaxy Note 5 takes a departure from previous models and features premium design but lacks a MicroSD slot and water proofing. To be fair, none of the Notes were ever waterproof... only the Galaxy S5.

So the question is... will previous Galaxy Note owners upgrade to the Galaxy Note 5?

I have the Note4, rooted and ROMmed. While I am very disappointed that the Note 5 doesn't have expandable storage, I like that it's available on Verizon in a 64GB version. I can live with that. The benefit of taking notes without turning the phone on is awesome - as is the scrolling screenshot and Samsung Pay. I will try it - knowing full well that it's completely locked down and un-rootable - as a happy user... not as a modder. As a Verizon customer paying full retail, I have 14 days to try it and return it if it's not all it's cracked up to be.

I've been on the Note 3 since it was released, and even when I got it I figured my next phone would probably be the Note 5. I figured that would be enough time for enough improvements to be made for it to be worth it. And I'd been looking forward more and more to when that day came, until the past couple of months - when it started to become clear that Samsung was apparently losing its mind. They don't seem to have recognized something crucial - that the way to keep a good product going, and growing in popularity, is to be VERY CAUTIOUS about doing anything to remove features that existing owners value greatly. Yes, the Note 5 has some nice improvements - better camera, faster wired and wireless charging, the external keyboard case, the S-Pen being able to write directly on the screen without waking the phone up. Great stuff! But..... Eliminating the microSD slot? So you HAVE to rely on the 'cloud' to quickly take up all those wonderful pics and videos that nice camera will take? As if the 'cloud' is everywhere. It isn't even close. If Samsung makes sure that carriers offer their users the 128GB model Note 5, that is the only way they can come even close to making up for such a huge miscalculation on their part.

Also, imprisoning the battery inside the case - so that you can't spend 1 minute swapping out an empty battery for a full one? Or installing an aftermarket battery that's three times larger than the stock one? I'm sure the Note 5 is more power efficient than its predecessors, but how has Samsung missed that there still isn't ANYONE out there who is so pleased with their device's battery capacity that they wouldn't see it as a huge blunder to REDUCE battery capacity in a new device model - no matter what the rationale. Inexplicable.

And how could they miss the boat on updating their USB hardware to Type C?? That should have been a no-brainer, mandatory incremental improvement.

Finally, 4GB of RAM is fantastic, but now that we know how much of that RAM is already in use immediately after booting up the baseline system, it's clear they must have found it necessary to add the extra RAM in order to give people at least a similar amount of free RAM available as the previous models. Yes, the added size of the new system software in RAM is probably a result of the added S-Pen and other improved features, but nonetheless, it still ends up looking like a missed opportunity to improve the device for the user's additional desire/needs for a larger amount of free RAM over past models.

Samsung seems to be making the classic mistakes of initially having great success because they got lucky and clever with their innovations, and then inevitably becomes unable to maintain the same mix of executives and staff, corporate intelligence, and vision to sustain that for more than a few years, before... going into frustrating decline. Ugh.

Only way I potentially consider the Note 5 is if the dual-SIM w/ microSD compatibility for one of the slots, is similar to the Motorola Pure Edition. Otherwise, I'll be sticking with my Note 3, which is still going strong after almost 2 years (and 2 new battery replacements). As much as I have loved the Note line of products, the Note 4 wasn't enough of a jump for me to get last year, and the Note 5, while I like the physical form factor much better than the Note 4 (cuz it's smaller), would have me compromising my routine of having an extra replacement battery and 128gb microSD (currently filled w/ less than 2gb remaining). MicroSD being gone was a bigger deal breaker for me, then the removable battery, but a very big deal breaker for what I require.

Does the Note 5 recognise OTG??? If so, perhaps I am wrong, but all my music and pics could be placed on USB stick and transferred via OTG cable to Note 5. Not that I will get one- contract not due till 2017. That may ease the NO sd card disappearance. Just remains to find out how to unfreeze a frozen phone without the easiest route of battery removal, when it can't be removed.
People in UK maybe the lucky ones, as Note5 will not be available for 4-5 months.

It's really too bad that Samsung couldn't figure out a way to integrate a microSD slot in the unibody form. Maybe because it's their first go around not having a removable back cover (starting with the S6), they just couldn't figure out how to do it like the other manufacturers have been able? Reason I say that is, Best Buy is offering such a good upgrade deal right now w/ a $200 gift card (to use towards purchase), as well as a wireless charger in exchange for any working smartphone! I have a Motorola Photon Q ready and waiting to trade in for a deal like this too!

oh well, I'm sure there'll be other deals for the remaining smartphones yet to be announced at IFA.

It was bad enough that they got rid of the microSD card slot but then not even have a 128GB option? This sticking point is probably going to keep me away from the Note 5 even though I really would love to use Samsung Pay. I would have been open to accepting the battery issue (grrrr.) but it's hard to move to a Note 5 when my Note 4 as well as my GS6edge both are capable of 128GB storage.

What's going to be free with the Note 5? About 50GB? Smh... I barelyhave that much available space now on my phones. Shame.

Likely cuz the s6 128gb didn't sell well. Looking at the subsidized upgrade pricing on the 64gb, it's probably a good thing because they already bumped up that price from past years, by 50 bucks... They are doing their best to mimic Apple, but no way I can see them getting away with that.

That's what I figured too - that the 128gb didn't sell well. I think having the slot would have allowed people to get what they need now and then have a chance to upgrade. Now, you're stuck with either 32/64. Totally agree - I think this is going to backfire big time. People who suggested these were the things they wanted to Samsung are prob all buying iPhones.

I have also been a note 3 and recently a note 4 owner. I will not be a note 5 owner! If Samsung can't get their act together and give us consumers what we want then they will never see another dime from me again! We want a romovable battery and SD expansion slot. Most phablet owners don't care about a glass enclosure as we put rubber/plastic cases on them. I think Samsung is trying g to be like Apple.... Samsung please prove us wrong with the Note 6.

I have the Note 4 and I ordered the Note 5.

While the battery size is really, really a let down (along with no SD slot), there are improvements to be had:

    - the design looks great, much improved IMO
    - the S-pen writing with the screen off is cool
    - the YouTube streaming is cool IMO
    - 4 GB of RAM
    - the quick-access camera access(double tap) , along with the f1.9 lens is also an improvement over the N4.
    - fast wireless charging might be a real benefit for me
    - Better fingerprint scanner

No it's not perfect, but none of today's "negatives" were a surprise if you saw any leaks over the last few weeks.

The negatives were not a surprise, but they were still several huge steps backwards. Samsung took the worlds best power-user phone and almost completely wiped out what made the Note line so great. They are trying to copy cRapple and it will cost them dearly. I would much rather continue to use my rooted Note 3 with 128g sd card than downgrade to a locked up Note 5 with 32gb internal storage, no SD, smaller non-removable battery and more breakable glass back.

    Talk about ****ing up ROYAL...............
I have the Note 3 and decided to skip the Note 4 but it's looking more likely that I'll just be getting that a year later, the Note 5 might be the prettier phone but that's about it, I'll go the Note 4 instead and have removable battery and extended storage and in not to long I'll be able to flash a ROM that has most of the Note 5 features anyway, I can live without a fingerprint scanner and the Note 4 camera is plenty for what I need anyway.
Congrats Samsung .....you just made a better spec iPhone...but no thanks....

I own the Samsung Galaxy Note 4... I rooted it and I'm now happy to have a usable SD card.
I use a 128 GB SD card and own three replacable batteries with to charging adapters EP-BN910CWE.
I use all this very frequently....
So the Note 5 is not usable for me... hope that the Note 6 will have a replacable battery and SDcard slot again...if not I will change to LG or Sony

You forgot being able to just put your finger on the scanner vs swipe on the N4. And the better feature S-pen. These are the only two things I see improvement from the N4. Most of other good features are removed on the N5.

Edit - Add one more. The ability to fast charge wirelessly.

On Verizon the Note 4 is not rootable. And probably never will be. If it was I would have gotten the Note 4 way back in November of 2014, or when root was attained on the N4. But it never has been, and looks like it never will be. So the N4 is a no-go for me as I need root privileges for my needs and uses.
