Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

It doesn't look like the sim website have any more information than anyone else does about that screenshot. Seems like they decided that the screenshot alone is conclusive proof.

EDIT: I was right:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/07/sprint-samsung-moment-and-htc-hero-android-2-1-updates-now-comi/

Just a few days ago, it seems like a certainty that Sprint would be pushing out Android 2.1 updates to the aging Samsung Moment and HTC Hero, but now a company admin has stepped in to assure us that things aren't nearly that close to go. The full text is pasted in after the break, but the long and short of it is this: the long-awaited 2.1 update is now on track "to be available in Q2."

I'm not such an enthusiast about 2.1, because you can get the gadgets and firmware you want by rooting and choosing the right customROM.
But, and that is a big one, I don't like the way HTC is treating me as a buying customer.
I and all of us who have bought Hero have made HTC's new rise from ashes, and I think that we deserve more that empty promises and hollow bot answers from their "support".
When I bought Hero (09/2009) I did recommend this phone to friends, but nowadays I say that everyone should keep as far away from HTC that they could. They don't deserve my support or my money.
I'm not buying another phone, just because they don't upgrade.

So, I'm giving up HTC, not buying another HTC, telling everyone who asks about HTC that they should not buy it.
This is all result of the thing that HTC doesn't seem to have any respect towards me, only money that new sales make.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again people: don't lose perspective.

Yes, PikkuJeesus, there is reason to be dissapointed and all, but that's one thing. However this furstration of yours (and of many) expressed in the forums around this issue seems unjustified.

When you first bought your handset, you were provided with a fully functional handset with a fully functional OS (Android 1.5). If there are bug fixes that needed to be taken care of in the firmware, HTC had the responsibility of fixing it through what is called "firmware updates" for Android 1.5 (and they have done that).

Getting Android 2.1 on our Heros is something HTC is giving us without a contractual obligation. Having our firmware revamped from Android Cupcake (1.5) to Android Eclair (2.1) is not a firmware "update" but a firmware "upgrade". If you purchase a computer with windows XP, Microsoft will realease updates to keep XP up-to-date in your machine. When Microsoft released Windows Vista and Windows 7, those were not updates, those are new operating systems and it is up to you whether you want to upgrade (not update) to the new version of such OS.

Everyone can kick and scream all they want, but the reality is that we should just shut the f*ck up and be glad that we, as Hero owners with a fully functional OS (1.5), will be getting a free upgrade (not update) eventually (and if we don't, nobody is ripping us off, HTC has carefully kept very silent in making no official promises in regards of dates for releasing this upgrade for our handsets).

Seriously, I'm tired of people complaining like the world owes them something. You paid your money and you got a working device, deal with it or get an iPhone and be chic.

Why should I shut the **** up?
If I think that something is wrong, why shouldn't I shout it out?

And also, do you really have a fully functional OS, have you used your BT lately? Or at all?
Doesn't your Hero lag at all? Try returning a call while you are browsing internet.
So, WTF, fully functional OS??

Nice that I can help you to blow up your steam, but I'm not complaining that world owes me something. HTC has said many dates for upGRADE, in their tweets and their "support" answers. Yep, I know, they are not official channels. But what is? Letter to home? Some officially signed mail from CIO?

+1 for PikkuJeesus

These phones, the android platform, AND the Android OS are all designed to be UPGRADED. The O.S. 1.5 for these phones are NOT fully functional, and if HTC WANTS to sell 1 more phone, they WILL update their older phones, or else everyone will jump on motorolla's bandwagon.

This is stupid to say 'well when you bought the phone' well when you bought your nissan there was no telling about a break petal issue OR a resolution WAS THERE? (heh assuming you own one). Same difference. Also, even though no one gave a specific update time, date or number, there was ALWAYS the information of having an UPDATE

Microsoft wouldn't give you free operating systems because it's their business to sell them. Android however is a free, open source OS, so you cannot compare the two in that way.

Also, I agree with hexskrew that when you buy an android phone, with a rapidly evolving OS, it's normal to expect the free upgrades everyone else is getting. Otherwise, you are quickly left behind. Compare it to windows where people are still using the 9 year old XP and have 99% of programs still available and you can see why having updates to android is so important.

Really, all we're waiting for is the updated version of HTC sense, and for HTC to tweak 2.1 a little so it works on our hardware.

Well, if many insist in looking at the situation as exercising our "right to cry" (and I guess now we ought to have a reason to be fulfilled in our nagging) here's your reason (posted previously by Xtiro):

Sprint: Samsung Moment and HTC Hero Android 2.1 updates now coming 'in Q2' -- Engadget

Do we all feel better now?

Not really.
My brothers Samsung Spica got it's upGRADE to 2.1 last week.
He bought it three months ago and I think that Spica has been on market for half a year or so.
That's only the jealousy part from me.

Haven't you seen any of those "Q2" or "Q1" infos ever before?
I remember when my Hero was supposed to have 1.6 "no later than first part of Q4". That seems like long ago..

Second part why I'm going to iPhone or Motorola or something (ok, Nokia isn't a phone, it was only a troll) is that here in scandinavia we don't have working market - this is supposed to change in 2.1
Do you know how many usable and good programs there are only in the free part of Android market?
Yes, there are a few, but if I maybe want a GPS tracking program, all choices are lite or demo -versions with almost no usability.
This isn't HTC's fault, not at least all of it, but I think that they as a firm that makes Googles "own" first phone have some leverage towards Google.

As I said, I don't feel any better this morning.

Also though I want to add that one great big reason why Android was such a wonderful gem to admire and attract people to purchasing into is the fact that EVERYONE get's updates... well except for HTC. I think that hands down, we really should not have any beef with our carriers. I know they may have to take some time on their end of the bargain, but to say the least they just want it to go on without a hitch because for each phone that boinks out because of say.. packet loss across a network and etc. that's money out of their pockets, so it's pretty reasonable to say that the carrier should take the time to ensure their systems are working properly with the update and everything goes smoothly.

However the really crappy part is the monkey in the middle so-to-speak which is HTC. If HTC would have got off their asses and hustled on the 2.1 update from the starting line, we would most certainly have got it by now. The real unfortunate ignorance here is the fact that there is only one real difference between HTC and other manufacturers and that is Sense UI. So pretty much what ANY visual programmer can do from the Android market probably within a week, which is to make a few pretty add on helper apps, and a few widgets which are really just ported for the most part from 1.5 to 2.1, a big ass manufacturing company with ALL whitepapers on not only the phone and the components but actually take part in the fabrication of them, cannot pump out a few helper apps any less than a year??? It's bullshit. You can't really say it any other way. If not, then why do we have these other really bad ass HTC phones coming and right on time if I may add, that incorporate the full 2.1 OS AND the UI? Seems to me they took the full team that worked on the Hero, slapped them on all the new phones to get them out, and maybe sent the janitor to java programming class for a year or something...

Like it or lump it the point I am trying to make here, is HTC keeps bs'ing us with these updates that have no real importance over the competition other than a few tiny applications because they are too busy trying to make the next buck from the next set of suckers that want to buy the next bad ass Android phone *with Sense UI*...

Luckily for us, we can root at least, which I am holding off on but each passing day it get's more and more tough to just say no, while wondering if there is a point to saying no in the first place.

I know this. I bought this phone with the expectation of getting at least 3 updates while owning it and not upgrading for at least two years (hell I was actually going to see if I could make it last 4 since the capacitive touch screen never wears out the only real thing to worry about is the battery. heh).

All I know now is once I am done with this phone, I am going to go with Motorolla because at least they get the update, work their asses off on it, and get it out to the masses as quick as possible, without b.s.'ing the public.

To top it off if I were to get a chance I would not be asking HTC why there is not an update yet, because we all know why, it's pretty well obvious it's just a screwed up money scheme, so instead I would ask Google what they think of this, and what their thoughts are on HTC not doing what they should and when they should do it. What do they think of HTC screwing up their profits and giving their platform a bad name, and what Google should do from now on to ensure the positive experience of users of the Android platform. That would be the answer of the decade in my mind.

Yeah.. Seen those, but however, you notice no REAL release date? Same b.s. as with us hero owners, they probably just figured they would take them for a ride too while they are at it.

It probably is soon, and I am not saying sprint is at fault here, but we have seen these things before ya know. I wouldn't hold your breath on it being within the next month or so.

Google don't give a toss. They've already licensed Android to HTC so the money is in the bank. The terms of that license don't require HTC to provide updates. As to "giving their platform a bad name".... have you seen the press reviews for the Legend and Desire? Right now everyone is raving about them and Android..... Google will be delighted.
