Root [guide] How to manually downgrade firmware build 6.01.605.05 and newer

I think thats the problem im using a gsm carrier. what other rom would you suggest that works well and is stockish?

bberry would be better able to answer that than me... been a good while since the inc 2 has been my daily driver. im using gsm now myself, ditched vzw a few months ago.

pretty much anything based on stock should work, and you may find AOSP roms that will work for gsm, youll just need to check the roms dev thread first post to see what is supported.

the main issue you will have on gsm, even with a stock rom,is that likely youll only get edge data :(

Thanks again. Will check them out as the day goes by...Won't be able to do much as i will be at work but will keep you posted. hope berry responds to share a bit of experience as well.

Edge data :( i will just have to chance it.

I noticed just now after refleashing with that cm 7.2 that when i cancelled the activation and went to wireless xxx i settings i selected gsm / wcdma auto and i am now seeing signal bars working is this a case where it will be intermitent?

also i found a stock 6.01.605.05_VZW__OTA-stripped-odex.zip if i'm to use that stock will i need to do anything before i flash? and woul it remove s-off ?

Hey
Thanks for the guide. I did this on my DINC2 and it worked; Im back at 2.3.3 with Hoff & root access but having a couple problems.
1) Anytime I access an app that requires root access, it freezes upon checking.
2) Im stuck at 2.3.3. I go to "Update Software" and it won't update. Do I need to download 2.3.4 and flash that one over?

Thanks for ur time, peeps!

Just to Share...

First THANK YOU scotty.

I had the stuck at white HTC screen problem on a STOCK phone. I decided to try this, and just the unlock part fixed my phone. I tried a lot and that was all I had to do. So I completed the process. I had no problems with any of your guide.

BUT........

Second... If you are at the REVLOLUTIONARY part and it keeps saying wrong BETA KEY!!!... Just copy the Beta key it gives you, right click on the top of the REV window, scroll down to edit, scroll to paste. BAM!!!! it works.

I spent all night goofing with that error. went ahead and got some sleep, got up and searched it, and it worked like a charm.

Good luck to anyone coming along with this phone. This guide works, even fixes the HTC splash screen problem. I am off to locate a ROM still up for download now.

Hi, I am new to this rooting process. I managed to unlock the bootloader (using HTCDEV), install clockmod recovery, super user on my HTC incredible 2 phone.
Baiscally my goal is to install ucstom ROM (e.g. cm7). I am trying to downgrade and gain s-off.
When trying to do adb shell (the shell does not change to # as specified in the instructions)
Still I continued to follow the instructions
chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 2.18.605.3

and get the following error message
--set version set. VERSION will be be changed to :2.18.605.3
Patching and backing up misc partition...
Error opening Input file.

Any help appreciated.. Thank you very much.

I'm in a pretty bad situation with this process. I'm new to this, so I've been picking my way along with my old Incredible 2. I used several of the videos here to unlock my Droid (v. 2.3.4) and root it (http://www.rootjunky.com/htc/htc-droid-incredible/). Then I went looking for another ROM. I couldn't get Cyanogen or the Jelly Bean Carbon to work. I started seeing comments that the phone had to be S-OFF. I went through the process here (the second post since I had 6.04.605.07. There were some bumps along the way, but I finally got it done. I had seen this Revolutionary wiki (http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary#supported_devices), and all the web sites that talked about doing this said to use Revolutionary to make the phone S-OFF after downgrading, so I assumed the tool was available. I found that it isn't anymore. So now I'm stuck with 2.3.3 ( 2.18.605.3).

From the first process of unlocking and rooting I had the cwm recovery set up which I needed a few times, but with this change to 2.3.3 that's gone. I tried to go through the rootjunky process again, but on the HTCDEV site, when I get to the point of entering "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" in the terminal window, I get an error message--no long set of numbers like I should get. I tried using the RUU updater provided for Droid Incredible, but it didn't work; it said it was the wrong RUU. So I can't proceed with what I did before. Sometimes the phone gets into a reboot loop which is only fixed by pulling the battery, booting into the hboot window and then doing a factory reset.

I looked for ROMs that would take me back to 2.3.4, but what I found said the phone has to be rooted, which (I suppose) it no longer is. (At the top of the HBOOT window, btw, it doesn't say "locked" or "unlocked" as it did with 2.3.4. So I don't really know what I've got. Maybe it would help if I can get a CWM recovery re-installed, but I don't know how to do that.

So, without Revolutionary, I seem to be sunk. Sorry for the long post, but I thought the details might make it easier to get help. Is there anything I can do to either get this thing unlocked and rooted again so I can flash another ROM (from 2.3.3) or to get it back to 2.3.4?

Thanks for any help.

If you're using the phone on vzw, leave it stock and you can ota back to current.

Option 2,give it a few days and see if revolutionary becomes available again. It has been working up until the last few days.

Failing either of those, you can possibly find an ruu to take you forward to a firmware compatible with htcdev.

One last option, you can find someone with an xtc xlip wich can be used to give you real, permanent s off. If you happen to be near Dayton,oh,I could do it for you. Otherwise, look for local shops that offer an unlock service,as alot of them will have the clip available.

Thanks for writing back so quickly. The first two options look like the best ones; I'd really like it if revolutionary.io became available, but I read on some website that it now is only for some special paid services.. I tried to find an ruu to go forward, but the only one I found required the phone be rooted. Even if I could make the phone S-OFF now, I'm not sure what I would do, since I no longer have cwm recovery. I did find out that the phone definitely isn't rooted anymore. I tried running Titanium root which I had used before, and it said I wasn't. So, bottom line, I will probably end up activating it on Verizon and seeing if it will go back to current OTA. Thanks again.

I managed to get my Incredible 2 back to 2.3.4 and in a re-locked state (where it was before, it didn't say anything about being locked or unlocked). So now I'm back to the beginning and would like to root it and install a different ROM. What I'm reading, though, is that it has to be turned S-OFF first, and the only way to do that is with revolutionary.io which is gone. Is there any other way to install other ROMs?
