Root [Hima] TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP)

Good tip there for getting SuperSU onto the M9 with this iteration - nice!

Congrats on getting this out and many thanks, @CapThrowback! :)
Chainfire is working on adding support to the SuperSU zip for the M9's "unique" situation so that the extra steps won't be necessary. Once it's confirmed working, I'll update that post :).

thanks, very good to know. Since VZW changed the Plan structure, I have to wait til Nov 29 to fulfill my contract - or I have to pay an additional $40/mo to pay off the current phone :-(

Will the twrp recovery allow for multiple slots, or do you have to install custom roms into the 1st slot? TIA, seeker

Sorry, I should have been clearer, I should have asked if the process you quoted works for providing root on a VZW M9, or just installs twrp? I've got no experience w/HTC, & need to know b4 I commit to a 24 mo contract @ full price.

VZW has a reputation to prevent modders from doing their thing on Big Red phones… & in other places in XDA it said that other routines that provide root have proven ineffective on VZW…

All help much appreciated, seeker

The referenced post is only about TWRP. I believe you need S-OFF to be able to root a Verizon M9. Unfortunately there is no S-OFF method available for the Verizon M9 (that I'm aware of). I'm also not sure what you meant in your previous post by "multiple slots."

EDIT: Corrected the above based on additional information.

EDIT 2: There is S-OFF available, via Java Card, but requires sending your device to someone that has such a card for it to be unlocked. The thread for that is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-one-m9/general/m9-java-card-t3063247

Me: multiple slots, as in multiple rom slots in twrp, like I have on S4 w/safestrap & Hyperdrive… unsafe side is for Stock, Safe side (as in to play w/custom roms). I heard that later versions of safestrap allow custom rom installation only in the 1st, (unsafe to play with) side…

So S-Off is diff fm the unlocking of the bootloader that you can do via htcdev.com?

Sorry, but I don't know a lot about HTC & some of these more esoteric modding routines, but I've rooted & installed recovery on Razr & S4, so any help is most appreciated. My contract w/vzw is coming to a close & since they changed the contract scheme & don't have root for M9 & other charming things like removing good features on the LG-G4, like FM radio & smart something, I may go to Sprint…

Thanks again for your help, seeker

S-OFF is a more complete unlock for the device than htcdev. Unfortunately the Verizon M9 isn't unlockable via htcdev because Verizon has restricted it. The Sprint version is perfectly unlockable, though.

CapT, thanks again! htcdev does seem to list vzw M9 for unlocking BL… so fm what you're saying, vzw thwarts this? Correct?

I'm curio us, how would it be diff on Sprint if htcdev is only a lesser unlock? Do thë not thwart things the way vzw does? tia, sseker
Exactly. Verizon doesn't allow htcdev unlock. Sprint does. And if you can htcdev unlock, you can also S-OFF.

Great, would you pls be kind enuf to recommend some tutorials about S-off & unloocking bootloader, this way I can grow & work smarter… tnx seeker
I'll leave this to @EarlyMon. I haven't used tutorials in ages, lol. Both unlocking and S-OFF are pretty straightforward procedures, so I've never even looked into whether such things existed.

I took advantage of making a system image with the latest version of TWRP as soon as I installed the recovery.I wasn't sure how I was to proceed from there regarding the recovery though. I didn't tell it to leave the system unmodified after that when I went to flash SuperSU.

Hope I did that right. I wanted to get rooted. The youtube video I used didn't mention making a system image at all so I sort of winged that part. I just backed it up vs that and System, as well. I thought that would be redundant. I did backup the stock recovery though.

It seems there are various options to restore in order to take an OTA now, anyway, from edits to the original Faq that CapThrowback informed us of. Plus, I managed to find an RUU of my build, so, hopefully, if all else fails, I could use that.

The vid also failed to mention that you need to check a box in Developer options in order to be able to unlock your oem when you are on 5.1, as I am. I had read that somewhere

Also, in the adb mode, when I tried to mark my token, it was marking more than the area specified in the video. Going in to the properties of the prompt, I was able to turn off something regarding word wrap and that solved that issue.

Now I am off to flash a rom!

I have a Sprint phone. The choices for roms there are fairly slim compared to the general section. Question, are those roms compatible with the Sprint M9?
