How is marshmallow working for you?

So I finally decided... Flashed a cut of Marshmallow PV2 to my Nexus 5. Had to do it, the Lollipop crap was getting kinda old, and I will admit, absolutely hated the experience.

I credit CM12 for making it better, but then that was shattered with 12.1, again making it as sloppy as 5.0 when it was first released.

Here's what I think:

It looks like an optimized Lollipop (yay) but at last, buttery smooth, increased battery longevity over 5.1 and surprisingly no FC'S or reboots. Installation went smooth, but uh...?

I downloaded a flashable zip of PV2 and used TWRP to flash. Only did a standard factory wipe, flashed the zip and done. I was previously running CM12.1, rooted with TWRP recovery.

After Marshmallow made it's initial boot, lost TWRP and root. Figured this would happen... But oh well. Started up nicely, runs great. Also received OTA of final PV3, that upgrade went smoothly also. Think I'll keep it stock and see how final cut is.

Overall, a better experience going from 5-6, unlike 4-5 upgrade nightmare that nearly destroyed my phone and pissed a lot of folks off.

Anybody else try it yet? I'm surprised there isn't much being posted in N5 forums, being among the first to get it. I like it, think I'll keep it stock until final, don't wanna bother with root yet since it involves custom kernel.

Call me a dinosaur, but I'm still on KitKat.
I never 'upgraded' because I've read so many adverse comments about Lollipop.
I'm still willing to change, though, if I hear enough good reviews of Marshmallow.
If the time comes, is it possible to upgrade from KitKat directly to Marshmallow, or would I have to go via (although very temporarily) Lollipop?

If memory serves me, you wouldn't be the first to get the OTA but it wouldn't be very long until it comes to you.

I'm surprised you've held out this long. I couldn't stand the constant notification telling me to upgrade. My wife's phone is still on KitKat. She's more patient than I am. Probably why we're still together;)

In fact, once the Lollipop to Marshmallow OTA comes out your notification will go away until the KitKat to Marshmallow OTA is released. That's what happened to us for previous versions.

Thanks for this.
No, mine's still telling me to upgrade to 5.0.1, so I'll wait!

OK, then I'll have to 'upgrade' to 5.0.1, then to 5.1, then to 6, I suppose.
How will I know when Marshmallow is available to me, then? I don't want to upgrade to Lollipop and then find Marshmallow isn't available to me yet.

You won't really be able to predict, but wait until you see other people posting they are receiving it. However, 5.1.1 really isn't half bad, especially if you are going to have it a short while. Admittedly, my Lollipop experience is colored by using alternative ROMS and, more importantly, alternative kernels, but after being down on Lollipop for a couple of months, I really got to the point where I preferred Lollipop and wouldn't go back to KitKat. It takes a little tweaking and getting used to the things that are different. I'm an old guy and change is hard. ;)

Once you know Marshmelllow is ready (more likely to be 5.2 rather than 6.0, which is good-- a refinement rather than a big new jump), upgrade to 5.1.1, but you'll then have to wait until it rolls out to you.

Lollipop works fine for me too (although I'm also on a custom rom with a tweaked kernel etc)

Marshmallow preview is down as 6.0 in system settings so I'd be surprised if Android do end up calling it 5.2. Time will tell.
Ah, didn't realize. I still think would make more sense as 5.2, but really doesn't matter. It is what it is, whatever the number. ;)

Did anyone have an issue with their LED not working? It was working after I flashed it, but yesterday I noticed it wasn't working anymore.

Edit: I FDR'd and it seems to be working again. FDR is a pain :S

FDR?

My LED stopped working only for charging status, seems to work fine for notifications.

Heard finished 6.0 should be out for Nexus devices soon. I have only a few gripes about Marshmallow, we'll see if official cut fixes any of it.

Thanks gents. No rush. I can wait.

Just for fun, I decided to flash a factory image of stock Android 5.1.1 without root and locking my bootloader, so I could take the OTA when it comes. I know I didn't need to, I could have just waited to flash the factory image of 6.0 and no doubt will if the OTA takes too long, but I thought it would be interesting to check out stock since I keep telling wary folks that it's not so bad.

Now keep in mind, this was a factory image flash, wiping everything, so it is a really clean install and I had to set everything up again (no titanium backup). So, I can't swear just taking an OTA will provide the same experience (which is why I always do a factory reset after taking an OTA).

However, I am actually pretty amazed at how good an experience stock 5.1.1. The battery life is absolutely great so far and it runs smooth as silk on my N5. There are things I miss from my ROMs, particularly the dark skinning and a few other features, and I hate the app bloat from Google (which Nova Launcher hides for me). And, of course, I miss having root, but boy am I impressed how far stock lollipop has come from when it started out in terms of battery life and performance. If I were someone who stayed with stock, or even rooted stock, I would not at this point be missing KitKat.

Likely, whenever I get 6.0 I'll play with it stock for a day or two, but will probably root aas soon as it becomes available to do. Will have to wait for the ROMs as usual.

Darn this Nexus 5. Two years old and not providing *any* justification for an upgrade. ;)
