Root [Official Root Guide] Kyocera Hydro Vibe

n5l8yif.png

Warning, this might turn your phone into bender who wants to kill all humans!
In all seriousness, you use this at your own risk! It is not my fault if you brick your phone, I did not create the program. Just came across it, took a gamble.

Phone still seems to work OK for me after this. Programs seem to get granted Root permissions. However, Root checkers claim its not rooted at first. Superuser seems to get uninstalled, but when reinstalled it only knows how to crash. So you need to install SuperSU Instead to update the superuser binaries. This will allow full root.

Root Genius installs something called Kinguser. Seems to work, and things that require root permissions seem to work such as uninstalling annoying built in apps like Lumen Toolbar (Yeah you can disable it without root, but it still there taking space. But I was able to fully remove it.)

=======Root Guide =========

AGAIN DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!! ALL FAULTS ARE YOUR OWN!!

Warning!!

Do not attempt to factory update your phone while rooted. It will Error, &
Turn it into a coaster (bootloop), if you are unable to get a replacement. If update is important before you attempt it use the same program to unroot. (Havent tried unrooting to see if that works but couple others said it will).

Advice!
This method is only for Android Jelly Bean at this time.
In the OTA Update a new kernel is applied which blocks this root method.
I am in the hunt for a new method. Until than if root is importan. do not use the factory upgrade.

No Recovery!
This phone is still locked at this time. So there no way to flash a new recovery or custom roms at this time. So do anything on this guide at your own risk. there is no way to backup your phone and restore it in event of a bootloop.

AGAIN DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!! ALL FAULTS ARE YOUR OWN!!

Requirements
-Windows OS
-Android 4.3 (4.4.2 see after this method)
1. Enable USB Debugging
(go to setting -> About Phone -> Tap on Build number till Dev Options enable, Go back to settings, Dev Options, Check USB Debugging)

2. Download Root Genius
ROOT Genius - Android Oneclick Root Tool

3. Run the program and follow it step by step. it dose everything on its own pretty much from there.
If it keeps asking to retry, Check your phone to make sure you allow the computer to connect.

4. Let it do its thing and finish. But don't stop here, if you do the root will only be half done! Finish the steps.

5. Install SuperSU (From the PlayStore) instead of Superuser (Doing this will allow Root Checkers to see the device is indeed rooted)

6. Remove kinguser at this point for its not needed. (Also My aVast mobile app told me to remove it that it was not safe when a update came out for it. Play it safe. use your own picked app to replace it. you may have to install an app like "System app remover (ROOT)" to remove it.)

7. Enjoy! :) & BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR ROOT!

=======================
=======================

*For Android 4.4.2*
Advice: At your own risk. This app has some privacy concerns see how it wants to see your contacts, stats, etc. Use this at your own risk.

Note: Before finding this method i tried many others one being Kingoroot. Which failed but did put Kinguser into the system partition. It was useless & became unremovable. silly how that work but that's all it could do was add a app. but still did not grant root.

But after this method Kinguser being compatible started working allowing use for english app that can control root permissions. Might want to think about it before using this method even know it will fail. It is up to you. This method uses a APK thats all chinese, so after rooting the management app is chinese and impossible to navigate unless you can read it. But because i tried to root with Kingoroot before this. Kinguser see the used root and binaries and is in english. Because of this after root i removed Kingroot, and the chinese app it installs leaving Kinguser as is. Root was still useable. removing the privacy concerns that came with them.

Or you can try to just download the Kinguser APK if you already rooted.
http://superuser.kingoapp.com/

---
Step 1: Go into settings - Security - Check Unknown Sources

Step 2: Simply Download Kingroot apk and install it

Step 3: Open it, and onces it comes up hit the blue root button.
(if you get lost here. watch this dudes video).

Step 4: Once its done, reboot the device. Install a root checker to confirm root, and enjoy! ;) (Root checker might report back false no root status at first. Once permission is granted to it, either force close and open it again, or toggle new(old) View from the top right settings (the 3 dots) and recheck.)

Step 5: (Your choice) For english Root permission management download Kinguser if you don't already have it.
---

Warning: Attempting to update SU Binaries with this phone with any superuser app might break root permission. A superuser app is not needed anyways. In event you do this by mistake. you will need to power off the phone, Then holding Vol Down, at the same time with Power. Factory Reset it. Reinstalling Kingroot without doing this will not help. but factory reset will. Cheers!

Choice Apps I added after this where BusyBox & Device Control. Nice apps to have with root. Device control needs busybox, and with Device control I removed unwanted bloatware, and have nice settings and tools.
Got my 4.4.2 rooted Thanks!

I rooted my phone and have Kingroot/Kinguser, at the moment the phone keeps telling me to update, how do I uninstall root to allow it to actually update? I actually tried to go through with the update before reading the forum and even though the update failed (multiple times) it never bricked my phone. Simply doing the uninstall from the settings didn't work, it still keeps failing. My phone has Android 4.4.2, is that the newest update? I just booted to recovery and wiped cache, waiting for the update to download to try again.

Reposting this from another thread to help spread word, and ease for those scared of manual patching and unable to run the OTA update due to error codes and need google apps to work.

I know I been out of the wood work lately. I pretty much stop using this phone. But in case i missed it on one of the threads or here. If someone ran into not being able to upgrade there phones to fix this issue due to a error even if you unroot. I found I didnt have to follow some of the crazy guides out there that patch this or suppose too. Also seen some scary bricking stories of people that messed up in the self patching attempt.

I got around this issue when it finally started to effect me by just not allow auto update from play store. Some phones may get slight different revision or whole versions of apps . So To ignore this i just kept the version of Android I had, and installed aptoide which ignore that feature of Google Play and just grabs the latest and greatest based on android version alone. I noticed this when I even update all google apps using play store to start with and aptoide would still tell me there was a update for the apps even know play store says there latest.

I updated all google apps using aptoide alone. And the issue is no where to be seen what so ever. But I only figured this out because its the best phone I own for some games I started playing (so I pulled it out of my draw after little over 7 months and it still had over 50% battery, bitchen battery.. lol) which work best on it and not so well on my Moto E . I miss my vibe but cant use it on the same plan as my Moto E. Would liked to put my vibe on Freedompop but there little but of asswipes about adding other Sprint MVNO phones. Least I could activate it on a free ringplus plan which has shitty offerings then freedompop but its something, and a backup free phone which spends most its time tethered to my Moto E.

But hope this help someone thats too scared to do the long winded manual patch, and cant install the OTA update.

Cheers

Depending on the error code, if u removed some preinstalled apps while using root that maybe why. The phones recovery only wipes user data and cache. It does not restore any removed preinstalled apps. Companies like Keyocera which are heavy on locking there devices put in a checks when a OTA runs, and when it sees your phone had root changes, it will stop the update and toss out a error code. You would have to get the very correct apps that where removed, reinstall and move them to the /system/app folder. so when the updater runs, nothing should be noticed and the update run.

oh.. p.s. to remove root just go to Kingroot app go into setting in that app and there a uninstall option that also removes root.

Is it possible to fix the bootloop? As mine decided to do an auto update and it is bootlooping.

If you went into recovery and cleared user data, and cache all that without results. Then your sorta out of luck. The phones just too locked up there no way to adb or fastboot into the phone to flash it in that state.

If this is the case, sorry but its a paper weight now.

Started to play with my vibe again more and in the process of activating it again on Freedompop. I been studying a back up of the recovery i pulled from it. I tore it open and started to look at it, and along side a TWRP recovery I have for my Moto E 2nd GEN. There some things I want to try to and then flash recovery back to the vibe to see if I can get TWRP to work on it. Wish I had a spare vibe laying around.

Too scared to even try on the only one I got. I thought about making a donation page for people to help me buy another for the project but one failure and it all could go down the drain. lmao

Granted I feel if the recovery is screwed up, the phone should still boot normally (this happen on a past phone before) but recovery just wont work till its re-flashed with a working one again. But again i am too scared to even temp that theory. I could maybe try to make one and let someone else try and post their results but that be their risk.

If someone willing to do that, I will work on prototype recovery, and a guide how to flash it onto the phone. But I still wanna look into it more before I build one. Just this is not one of my better fields.

I'd be glad to give it a try on my old vibe. Doubt it would work without unlocking the bootloader but it can't hurt to try.

Edit: I remember seeing the adb commands for backing up and pushing a recovery but it couldn't hurt for a refresher. (Can't be too careful)

Well right now i am far from a prototype. Its more harder looking once i got into the Ram disc archive of the recovery.img.
I also have seen it done without getting passed bootloaders before. I have no idea when I will have one ready. but if i ever get one set up that i may have a hint of hope for I may start a new thread to take on testers and put a jolly roger photo to state warning. lol

I have hopes that even if the attempt fails long as the phone was booting properly before it should keep doing that. just toast the recovery only. In which case should be fixable restoring the stock if a backup is made which i may link to a factory too in event someone was too stupid too.

I was thinking using a flash app with a easy to use GUI right on the phone for sake of ease so wont have to force anyone to use adb if they dont feel good about inputting commands. But again just have to way and see while i work on it. cant say i will everyday. got a life to deal with.

Link me in to that thread when you make it and if you need any help with some developing I'll be glad to pitch in any work I can.

Well do, if i ever get that far.
This is probably a stupid question is there a way to get the source code for this phone from Kyocera? Or a system dump from a rooted vibe? What is the closest phone as far as hardware goes that has a working recovery? I have a moto e 2nd gen running twrp 3.01r1, I don't know if it helps or not.. We could try to port it maybe

Well Kyocera released the source code but the bootloader is locked and there hasn't been much progress. The farthest I've ever seen anyone get with a recovery was with a cousin phone. The rise. And they got it to boot a recovery but the phone replaced the recovery to stock: http://androidforums.com/threads/porting-clockworkmod-to-the-kyocera-rise.660612/ you can see their progress if you're willing to read.

Like Batman said there is some source code out there but none of its related to the bootloader or even the recovery i think. Its just ROM, & Kernel. Also only reason I ever mentioned the Moto E was because I had one and already had the file downloaded so i used to them to compare. But I plan to look into what other Keyocera phones might have unoffical twrp ports and tare them open to compare. but even then there will be many differences because of it being entirely a different model.

The rise like Batman also mention would be the closest, but wish it was twrp they where working with and not clockworkmod, it be hard to really look at there work to use for twrp if they where using a recovery option that was really any good (just my opinion). I even tried to run the stock recovery.img through http://builder.clockworkmod.com/ but it just fails giving me a bad gateway error for the site. Pft, wouldnt that be something if it just up and worked like that. lol

As for the rise reverting to stock recovery, its similar enough to the vibe when i was looking at mine. It has many partitions on it, I mean many. There likely another stock recovery on one of them and the vibe will do the same thing likely if they dont match. Just need to figure out which dev block the back up recovery is in, and find a way to prevent it from resetting or replace it with the custom recovery also. Which maybe a favorable to not touch such a feature during the dev process in event of a bad recovery flash. Onces or if we get a custom recovery too boot and work properly, then look to taking care of the other recovery that flashes it back. but one step at a time and a hell of a step it is.

Just a little thing to chime in: they were working to get cwm because they were just testing to see if the could get a custom recovery. (First get a car, then decide what color you want it. I prefer twrp over cwm anyday, but in general I just want a recovery that can do the job even if it was the stock recovery with a flash feature.)
