Meseenger notifications not working when device is locked

Since my device updated to Marshmallow I stopped receiving notifications from Messenger and Gmail when I lock my phone and leave it alone for a few minnutes. I tried rebooting my phone, re-installing Messenger, turning battery optimisation off for Messenger and putting Messenger notification on priority. None of this helped. What else can I do?

If you mean Chat Heads for messenger, by default, Marshmallow doesn't allow them (or anything that involves an app drawing over another app). Here is the fix for that.

Might be a similar fix for Gmal. I don't actually Gmailon my phone (rooted and uninstalledit-- I use Aquamail), so I can't test.

@Hook, no I have no problems with the Chat Heads. Before Marshmallow when my phone was locked and I had not used it for say 15 min if I suddenly received a text in the Facebook Messenger my phone would play the notification sound and the little led light would start blinking. Now my phone does nothing while its locked. The moment I unlock it I receive all the messages at once.

@andrews317, I haven't changed anything in the permissions for the Messenger app. It currently has Contacts and SMS permission. The rest of the options are disabled. I'm not sure how would the Telephone or Storage permission affect Messenger.
