Why I cancelled my order

I'm not saying that I won't eventually get a 5x, but for several reasons I'm just not as fired up to be among the first as I was for my Nexus 5 two years ago. For one thing, I really like everything about my N5 and would only want a new phone if it has some significant new or improved features. So far, the only ones I see are a likely improved camera and the fingerprint sensor. Since I've had bad luck with the fingerprint sensor on another device, I'd like to wait to see an in-depth review and hear from some users before going ahead.

But the main thing for me is that the 5x represents a step back in convenience for the following reasons:

No wireless charging. Even though it's slow, I really like that feature since it's so easy to just set my phone on the pad when I'm at my desk and don't have to fumble with cables and connectors. When I get up, I can just grab it and go.
The USB-C connector. I was really glad a while back when we got rid of all the proprietary connectors around here so that all our phones, tablets, and other devices use the same microUSB connector, so that any charger in any room (or in our cars!) can be used for any device that we have. I know that the C connector is the latest "standard," but for me it might as well be proprietary and means having to have additional cables and/or chargers wherever I might want to charge this one phone. It's going to be a PITA.

So I decided to cancel my order and wait a few months to see how this device shakes out. YMMV of course!

I decided not to buy n5x at all. I am too not excited to upgrade. Got N5 when it came out and it serving me with no problems. But software is pushing and N5 hardware seems to getting behind.

The trouble with standards is that they change. Not long ago mini-USB was the standard, then it became micro-USB, and by this time next year most will be USB-C is my guess. But here and now, it is indeed a step back in compatibility.

Actually I'm not fussed by the hardware generally - 808 vs 810 is mainly a difference in GPU (as you'll rarely use the full A57 cluster anyway), and I don't think that 3-4GB RAM is going to be essential in the near future. It's just the internal storage that kills the 5X for me.

I guess if you already have a wireless charger, then things might look slightly different, but I just don't get what so big deal about wireless charging is. You have to buy a more expensive charger that is wired to the outlet just like a regular charger. It charges slow and it doesn't charge it if you pick it up and use it while you are sitting there. It's really a matter of , let's say, 3 seconds that takes to plug in the phone and using the other hand to hold the cable when you pick it up isn't it?

I thought the same thing until I found a Nokia qi charger at ATT for like $20 free shipping. I found it convenient to just lay it down at my desk and didn't have to worry about as much wear n tear on the USB port.

I am sure it is more convenient than plugging it in, especially if you have to charge the phone all the time.
I just don't think that it is a big enough factor in purchasing a new phone.
It might be that I just don't have to charge it all the time. I plug it in twice a day at the most, so I probably don't feel the need for it. I also like that fact that I can use the phone and charge at the same time when plugged in.

Wireless charging, or the lack of being able to get it, or install it, is a BIG DEAL BREAKER....

I will not put up with a phone that has to be tied down to something to recharge it. I have 3 Qi pads around the house, in my office, in my bedroom, and the TV room... It don't matter where I be, if the phone goes 'beep', I lay it on a Qi pad.... and if I suddenly need to answer the phone.... just pick it up and talk. if it is tied to a charger, the telco call has been disconnected for me more times than not..... just as soon as you pull that plug out.

and I have jerked the cord too many times to count by trying to grab it and run.... nope, Qi or nothing here.

I remember when wireless charging was first developed, it was going to "take over the world" with pads built into everything from cars to the tables at Starbucks! Guess when reality hit (expense, slow charging, competing standards, etc) that all changed. Still like it at home though.

I had it wireless charging on my last phone and never used it. I tried once at a Starbucks and it didn't work.

Have to say, I totally fail to see the point of wireless charging for phones: it's cool tech but plugging in a cable takes seconds so to me (YMMV) it provides zero real benefit. I guess the tech will come into it's own if and when we all move to electric cars.

I pick up my phone every time I leave my desk unless I'm running to pick up something I printed from the printer, so it's just annoying to have to unplug and plug in the 5 or 6 times I leave my desk.

I'm also concerned about wearing out the USB port.

I've never had any trouble with a USB port, but I don't leave my phone plugged in during the day - if I need to do that then its battery life isn't adequate for me.

gordon, to address some things. I too was an N5 user, and loved it! But I really like the 5x also. I'm a tinkerer and I love the ability to sideload new images, root them etc., and have a bloat free phone. So will be a Nexus user probably forever, if things stay as they are.

To touch on the finger print reader, it works great. For work I need a pw or pin on the phone in order to get corporate email, so I set it up to read either of my index fingers, as I can hold the phone with either hand, and it is perfectly positioned to touch, as opposed to being on the front and low as with iPhones. And it works great...

Agree on your bullet points, miss the wireless charging, but the included charger is a quick charger, so you can power up quickly. Battery lasts all day and I'll quick charge before bed and only lose a few % by morning in Do Not Disturb mode.

Also agree on the chargers....I have many micro's, but picked up a few cheap ones for car and work at the OnePlus site, and they're awesome. Of course the C side is reversible, but so is the A side, which is very welcome! Flat cable that doesn't tangle, one is 100cm, one is 150cm.

Plus the X is snappier than the 5, a slightly larger screen (I do not like big screens), great looking screen, MUCH better camera and it seems both the GPS and WiFi work better. Agree with Hadron though, wish it had SD card capabilities....Hope it helps....

That's same as me actually, plug it in when I go to bed, done. Frankly I just wouldn't have a phone that couldn't go a day or two without charging it. And despite all the latest mobile technology around, think that's one thing that hasn't really caught on here. I just don't see many wireless chargers on sale, have to look harder to find them, and I don't think too many Chinese devices are actually equipped with wireless charging. Nexus 5x, not likely to be seeing one of those anyway.

I'd love if I could go even one day without charging, but that was never the case with my Nexus 5 or my Nexus 4.

I managed a day from my N4 - just - for about the first 2 years I had it. The third year, if I'd used it at all during the day, it needed a boost to make it through to bedtime.

It's now been nearly 2 weeks and the N5X appears to be better than the N4 was when new, so unless I use it heavily, it easily lasts a day.

I've been charging it in the morning but it takes just a little longer to get to 100% than I have before I leave the house. I may switch to charging it the night before then give it a quick boost in the morning to get it back to 100% before I head out.

You're right. My 5x lasts a lot longer than my 5 or my 4. Hope it stays that way.

As the OP, just a follow-up: I've come to terms with the changes on the 5x and will be getting one. It'll probably be a month or two since I'm pretty busy right now and don't have the time to really enjoy setting up a new device. So I'll wait for the shut-in days of winter to descend on us and put my order in.
