Help Google Play Services not Working :(

UPDATE: Google released version 8.3.00 of Google Play Services, one that is compatible with the Hydro Vibe. However, it still causes essential Google apps (Drive, Gmail, Hangouts, etc.) to crash, in my testing.
It does bite, because the Vibe is a decent phone. I have moved on to a different phone but many can't afford to do it and basically you are stuck with a brick. It's too bad I really did like the Vibe but lack of support for their products and customers really turned me off, will never go back to Kyocera

I guess waiting is key... I destroyed my Kyocera Hydro Icon trying to replace their gapps with non-official gapps for the CM ROM... Since Kyocera does not have a fastboot loader... If you screw up your rom you are eff'ed. Thankfully I was able to return my phone for a new one and it's on it's way... I got to be more careful with it this time...

I am not for sure, but I think I may have disabled Google Play Services from updating itself.

What I did was root my Hydro Vibe using KingRoot. Then I used KingRoot's Uninstall tool to entirely remove Google Play Services from my phone. (This took two uninstalls -- first to remove the latest version, and second to remove the stock version that the phone comes with pre-installed.)

After Google Play Services was obviously nowhere on my phone (and causing all the Google apps to crash), I side-loaded Google Play Services v. 7.8.99.

I have the Google Play Store set to never auto-update apps.

For several days now, Google Play Services has not updated itself, even when the phone is connected to Wi-Fi for long periods of time, nor after the phone is rebooted.

So *maybe* removing Google Play Services completely (that is, removing the stock version) while in root will kill it from auto-updating itself when you install a later version of it from scratch.

I found a way to fix it!!! After a month and a half of dealing with Google & their promises to forward info to the programmers, ect, and having them seem to just give up, I stumbled on the fix by total accident. I'm still working out all of the details as much of it includes reverting to previous versions of several Gapps (which they can't tell you to try, even though it wouldn't let you with the broken set up), but I found a way to do it without rooting, only a dev option switch. And the missing library is magically available.
Sorry, have been staring at a screen for hours and am a little delerious! I plan to call them in a bit and see if they can/will release the info or update but if not I will post the step by step ASAP. Phone is about to die & I need sleep, lol, but THERE IS HOPE!!! I was able to get Hangouts, Gmail, Drive & several others i tested to work. I was even able to turn on Photo back up again.

OK Laynifer, do please share... You know there are plenty of us out here who would like to fix out situations also...

Just about to call Play Services now, will post update ASAP. To start make sure you have a decent file explorer (ES worked best for me), back up what data you can preferably to a cloud servics, disable Lumen tool bar, and make sure you have developer options enabled. Will let you know what Google says, but I'm pretty much counting on them to be less than helpful.

I agree, I wouldn't expect Google not to be too helpful either... However, if Google isn't going to be helpful and Kyocera isn't going to be helpful then that leaves the consumers of these devices pretty much stuck in the mudd with them... Anxiously waiting for news of YOUR fix...

Well, the info is being sent to the programmers, so maybe the next update will be an acutal fix, but for now... Like I said earlier, it was was a complete accident that I found this fix (which is sad because I've spent HOURS talking to Google & looking for answers). I was reading this http://www.lifehacker.co.uk/2015/03/16/hidden-android-kitkat-tips-and-tricks & decided to try some of the suggestions.
It was the switch to ART runtime from Dalvik that did it... My phone rebooted & took some time to "upgrade apps". I'd suggest connecting to a saved WiFi network & turning off the mobile data entirely. For whatever reason, this will install/find/? the elusive library.so that seems to be the problem with Gapps & our devices. I'll try to explain the rest of the process, but this is going to take a bit, lol. Once my phone was rebooted I went to app settings and the option to uninstall updates and disable Play Services was available again. Also make sure to unblock the installation of non market/3rd party apps, because you will have to install different versions of various Gapps from a website, including the 7.8 Play Services apk.
Im going to pause here so I can read the new posts, find the links & app versions, and if anything is confusing or you have questions feel free to let me know & I'll answer in next post.

What about Android Pay? Google accommodating for this app is why all this trouble began for this phone.
I reverted to the earlier Play Services that didn't support Pay, but I'm just tweaking things & trying them out. Now that the system library is working, I hope that between all of us we can get our phones operable until "they" have a real, permanant fix.

Very interesting. I assumed there may be a "switch" or library that was not properly activated in the latest Play Services, but I didn't know where to begin looking. I'll tinker with this and report what results I get.

Great job Laynifer... I'll do alittle catching up on ART before proceeding, any other information from you would be valuable... THANKS

That would be great! As far as apps & functionality here are a few things to note:
  • apkmirror.com has Google original app apks, the requirement for Play Services on our devices is that whichever version you install (obviously should be one that predates the crash issues) must end in 034. *Be sure to UNcheck receive notifications
  • Make sure to clear any auto updates& uninstall Play Store updates also. I disabled it entirely for now (until I find the correct apk)
  • I cleared cache & data on all affected apps, as well as any & every factory app relating to Google, Sprint, Virgin, Keychain (pretty much all system apps).
  • I reverted to Hangouts 2.3. Gmail & Photos are not compatible with the old verion of Play, but they were working prior to rolling it back.
There is still plenty to figure out & it is not a perfect fix by any means, but after almost 2 months of constant problems it is amazing to have a phone that works!

Be careful if you've made any changes to system apps prior to switching runtimes. Having set several recent versions of gapps and the ubiquitous GPS 7.8.99 as /system, my Vibe has been stuck in a bootloop since early this evening after starting the transfer to ART in motion. Leaving it on the charger overnight in the hope that it'll be all straightened out by morning, but...

Best of luck! I'm sorry to hear that. I guess fortunately for me (even though I was completely annoyed by it previously) I was unable to install any other versions of Play Services until after the runtime switch. I was also installing the 7.8 version via ES at the same time I was uninstalling the newer version. I have no idea if that made any difference, this whole thing for me has just been a giant happy accident.

OK I don't want to report this, but switching to ART made no difference to me.

I activated developer mode, then switched to ART and rebooted. My phone took several minutes to start up again.

I uninstalled Play Services and side loaded the latest version. Rebooted, then installed the latest Hangouts. It crashed. Rebooted, reloaded Hangouts again. It still crashed.

If only Kyocera would unlock bootloader, then we could install a vanilla ROM or CM 12 they have stopped supporting it anyways, long term this is the only hope of keeping this phone going[/QUOTE

I think you are 100% right. While browsing through system files and open source info I saw several dev notes about our "obsolete" devices. It amazes me that Google and Kyocera are pointing fingers instead of one or both of them finding a solution..
