Hi everyone! I'm still running KitKat on my nexus 5 but don't know if I should upgrade to marshmallow. Can anyone provide feedback on their experience using marshmallow? Any major bugs in marshmallow?
If you are doing an OTA update it will update one at a time to any version you haven't updated to yet. If you are flashing the factory images, you can flash straight to the latest version.Would I have to upgrade to lollipop then upgrade to marshmallow?
I'd say generally yes. At the very least, if you take an OTA I would suggest wiping the cache partition afterward. Normally I flash the factory images and start fresh. This last time when I updated my N6 to Marshmallow, I did not wipe my data, but I still used the factory images; primarily because I was rooted.Clean installations are usually best, does that apply to android also?
I'm not rooted. I never understood the purpose of rooting besides cosmetic stuff
You can certainly use the factory images without having ever rooted. I only asked because unlocking the bootloader is the first step in that process but is also a requirement to use the factory images. So if it's already unlocked it's no big deal, but if you consider unlocking it now you have to be willing to wipe the device.I'm not rooted. I never understood the purpose of rooting besides cosmetic stuff
The only problem is, that you will have to wipe the device before rooting, due to unlocking the bootloader. So you will lose some data. The best thing you can do is copy everything from your internal storage to a PC for safe keeping, backup anything else you can using Helium or similar. You will most likely lost all or at least most of your app data in the wipe. There's no real way to back that up without root that I've ever seen.Thank you everyone for all the great input. I went ahead and updated my nexus to marshmallow through OTA. So far so good. I was looking into backing up my app data, apk files, etc. And that's where root comes in as mentioned. Time to root my phone!
No problem, keep us updated!I'll try both options tonight and see how it goes. Thank you
You could try to remove the app from your phone, and then install the apk that helium backed up.I don't have an extra device to test the apk on. The old Android phone I was going to test it on is to old. Just wanted to update everyone in that.
Wise move. That trick seems to be for "experts". You may find that of you root a device it will not work with things like banking apps, which object to that sort of jiggery pokery.I'm not rooted. I never understood the purpose of rooting besides cosmetic stuff
You are right. Ask around if a friend will let you install that app on their deviceWhat if it doesn't work? Then I lose the app forever
I used to root for adaway, but with the monthly updates, I'm reconsidering. On M, I'm not rooted yet - using firefox to block out the annoying browser ads. If the dev community comes out with a way to root without a custom kernel, I may go back and root that way.I'm not rooted. I never understood the purpose of rooting besides cosmetic stuff
Amen!!it's also nice to be able to leave my phone off the charger overnight and have the battery level the same when i pick it back up in the morning.
