I decided to try getting 6.0 Marshmallow running on my trusty old retired Nexus 4. The goal was a fully functional, ready for prime-time installation, suitable for daily use. After some trial and losta errors, I finally got Marshmallow 6.0 running nicely. It's rooted and complete with the latest TWRP recovery, SuperSU, GApps, firewalling and all my usual apps installed and working.

It took some effort to get to this point. I tried 4 ROMs and Gapps packages, but most had serious bugs, especially when trying to install and run Gapps. I finally settled on these, available from links from this tutorial:

Other ROMs tried such as 6.0-Mako-MM.zip or asop_mako-ota-eng.franzd.zip either had immediate problems or developed problems when the matching GApps package was installed. Mostly endless "The Setup wizard has failed" or "Play services has failed" or "Play services will not run until it is updated" or various other messages and failures. The Holmes ROM is running trouble-free so far. Nice work!

Anyway, just passing along what worked for me. You've been warned about trying other ROMs!
