Help push email not pushing with android 5.1.1

I have tried everything but I cant get email to come through on a number of different accounts in a number of different apps unless I go into the mail app and force a refresh/poll.

I've tried disabling and updating google play services as some suggest with no luck.

I need to try to get this sorted as if I cant I'll need to return my phone as I rely on email.

Has anyone got any ideas? I dont know if it's android 5.1.1 or Huawei's EMUI 3.1 running on it that is causing the issue.

I have some experience with EMUI 3.1 and my guess is it is that. EMUI has a habit of making you jump through hoops to make Android work like it does on any other device.:(

I would start by making sure your email client is set as a protected app. TBH, I short circuit EMUI's app protection all together by protecting all apps. No need for a baked in task killer.;)

I'm about to leave. In an hour or so I'll take a look at my phone to see if there were any other fun settings to check.

Another thought is under Data traffic management | Networked Apps that you have enabled the app for data under both Wifi and Mobile Data and that under settings in there you haven't selected restrict mobile background data. This last setting would prevent email from refreshing in the background over mobile data in the background. So it would only retrieve email when you are in the email app.

I'm still digging through settings. EMUI is hard. :(

yep, have checked network apps and everything is double ticked. Also the restriction was not set.

I use K9 mail but have also tried the default app and blue mail, all have the same issue.

My gmail account in the gmail app experienced the same issue but it does appear now that the gmail app is working...

With that in mind I'll try the default app again for my non-gmail account and see if anything has changed

edit: that didnt take long. I opened the default app and only when it had opened did the last 3 or 4 emails come through (all of which were received and dated hours ago) so no luck there

This.

I've been so much happier since I just decided to protect ALL my apps. Everything is snappier, apps don't get terminated unexpectedly - and I'm even getting better battery life. (Thanks, Huawei...)

So if you haven't yet, I'd highly suggest hitting up Settings > Protected Apps > Menu > Add All. You can thank me later. :)

Two other items to check that may or may not be there, depending on your device:

1) Settings > Wi-Fi > Menu > Advanced Settings > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep. You'll want this set to Always.
2) Settings > More > Mobile Network > Mobile data always on. Again, you'll want this set to Enabled.

Huawei presents the defaults for both of those options (well, Protected Apps also) as ways to save battery, but mostly they just interfere with the way you expect the device to work. Like I mentioned, I'm actually getting better battery life since effectively disabling Protected Apps, and since forcing Wifi / Mobile Data to be on all the time (rather than shutting off when it gets bored) I'm getting emails and other notifications right on time.

Hope this helps!

thank you guys. codesplice all of those settings were already as you recommended unfortunately.

unforgiven, I have a Huawei Mate S.

My non-gmail account is an IMAP one for my business so it wasnt listed in accounts as I dont think that type of account would be listed there however all auto and background sync options you mentioned were checked. I was playing around in the gmail app and noticed I can now add my IMAP account in gmail (sure you never used to be able to do this) so I did this and my test email came through ok. I'd then think the issue was with k9 however I had the same issue with stock email app and bluemail...

Yeah, Gmail recently (in the past few months I believe) added support for external accounts.

Another thing to consider is that not all IMAP is treated equally - some does "push" delivery of messages while other configurations poll at intervals that should be configurable through your app. It really depends on what options are set on the mail server. It does seem strange that you would have the same delayed delivery with multiple accounts and different apps though...

The gmail app is definitely not pushing after all.

I had android on my xperia x2 and emails were pushed instantly so i know the account is good for it.

Really dont know what to try now. Would be a shame to give up on this phone because of only this issue. (although the way the notifications work in 5.1.1 with EMUI is also horrible.. and I dont even use the fingerprint scanner that I looked forward to getting so much)

I'm afraid I don't know what else to try, and I only use Gmail (well, Inbox) for email - but I do know that it works with EMUI 3.1, for whatever that's worth. :D

It's really a shame that Huawei degrades their good hardware with shoddy software. I'm hopeful that their experience with the Nexus 6P will help them scale back EMUI so that future devices won't have these headaches.

Before returning the phone, I'd suggest doing a factory reset. You'll lose your data and settings, but it's often a good way to make sure you start from a clean slate and revert any configurations or corrupted data that might be causing trouble.

This is a double-good idea if you recently installed an OS update. Those tend to break a lot of things for me, particularly with EMUI.

well chaps the phone is going back. I didnt do the restore but even if it did fix the sync problems there are so many things im not keen on in terms of notifications with 5.1.1 (or EMUI I;m not sure what it is) that I cant live with this thing for the price I paid. The main issue is there appears no way to dismiss a notification from the home screen (I used to swipe right to send it away but now this opens the app)

Next topic.. what phone WOULD you recommend? I'm going for a sim only deal so will be looking to buy outright.

Offloading my mind whilst I think of it.. Things I don't like

Having to go settings sound vibrate in silent move to switch between vibrate and silent (without using a widget)

Swiping right on a Facebook lockscreen notification doesn't open facebook

I wish I could tap a lockscreen notification to open or swipe away to dismiss like with my old phone..

The good news (I guess?) is that it sounds like your complaints are directly related to Huawei's EMUI, not Android itself. I don't know why they felt the need to kill useful features of stock Android in favor of their broken, unfriendly implementation, but it is what it is. So if you wanted to exchange the device for one with less-molested Android, that would likely eliminate your pain points.

It also sounds like Huawei is starting to get serious about fixing their UI/UX, what with hiring a former Apple designer and soliciting feedback from users at HTTPS://community.GetHuawei.com. Hopefully this means that EMUI 4 will be an improvement, but we can only wait and see.

That said, the only devices I can really recommend are the Nexus line - just because I know that they will work as Google intended right out of the box. No built-in task killers or shoddy memory management, no counterintuitive UX elements (like swiping away a notification to launch the app...), no half-measures covering up features of stock Android, etc. Motorola has, in the past few years, also done a good job of shipping stock Android with a handful of useful enhancements that complement the experience, but I'm a little wary of them given their moves in the past months.

what kind of moves do you refer to? Didn't you mention the nexus 6P as having issues earlier?

So when you get a lock screen notification you can double tap it to open the app and swipe away to dismiss as God intended?

On the push email issue, I have been doing a lot of testing and it is now working with a different app (BlueMail) however still not with k9. So I don't blame EMUI unfairly (although it could still be a conflict caused by this) it appears that this is my exact problem:

http://www.computerworld.com/article/2991956/android/motorola-marshmallow-meltdown.html

Moto's just not been very good about announcing updates for phones even released this year. Not that Huawei has done a stellar job, either, but I don't think Moto is going to be Android's golden child anymore.

I only mentioned the 6P as it has been selling like hard-to-get hotcakes. I'm hopeful that shows Huawei that there is a high demand for their hardware with Google's software (rather than something laden with EMUI).

So when you get a lock screen notification you can double tap it to open the app and swipe away to dismiss as God intended?

Yep, that's how it works on a Nexus - double-tap to open the notifying app from the lockscreen notification, swipe away to dismiss it.

You may be onto something there. As I mentioned, that's not something I've got a lot of experience with though. :(

thanks so much codesplice and unforgiven for your help. I think I'm going to stick with the z2 I have for now, I was never disappointed with it only the limitations of 16gn but now ive moved a load of apps to the sd card i think im ok for now. I'll keep my eye on nexus 6p and nexus 5x reviews.. i think i like the idea of a nexus next. thanks again
