BingeOn on T-Mobile

At first this sounded good. Until I thought about it.
More people on T-Mobile will be on the towers more, streaming more, leading to more "congested" towers, leading to more Metro "prioritizing" = slower for Metro users

It also doesn't seem to be in line with net-neutrality. Who is T-Mobile to tell people some video streaming services are free, others aren't (currently YouTube not). To say one type of traffic is free, another isn't, in not neutral. How about Google Chrome traffic is free, Internet Explorer is not.
Do online gamers get free traffic? VoIP users get free traffic? Both use less then video streaming.

If you own Amazon Prime, HBO, Netflix or Hulu, you just got free customer incentives others did not.

Just come out and say it correctly, T-Mobile wants to compress video streaming like Cricket already does. Its a sound business strategy to save bandwidth.

And most of this was just jingling keys, to distract you from the Uncarrier raising their prices.
Their single unlimited data plan was $80, now going to $95

Their family plan was 4 lines of 10GB each for $120
now 4 lines of 6GB for $120

They've said more services will be added in the future, maybe that will include YouTube.

"We want all of your favorite video streaming services to be included as a part of Binge On. If your go-to video streaming service isn’t part of the program yet, tweet us your favorite service @TMobile, along with the hashtag #BingeOn. If they meet our requirements, we’ll investigate the feasibility of adding them. No one pays to join and no money is exchanged."

As for net neutrality, this blog post sort of talks about it:

Metro details here-
https://www.metropcs.com/more-data.html
Note that "Data Maximizer" will be automatically enabled as of 11/19 for everyone and will limit streaming video resolution. Those on unlimited plans where the data usage isn't an issue may want to turn this feature off, which Metro says is possible but doesn't specify how. You may have to log into your account to do so.

To clarify, MetroPCS will not be getting Binge On.

Metro is getting free music streaming and Data Maximizer, but all video streaming will still count towards your data. Only T-Mobile has Binge On.

The free music is nice though. But this name is so corporate fake - Data Maximizer
Does it maximize web html traffic? Gaming traffic? VoIP services?

Nope, just compresses video (some streams). We will see where this goes.

Sprint/Boost used to limit video streams to 3g - they stopped on all plans. Most people are adults, and can make up their own mind. Most video services (YouTube) included, let you choose the playback stream quality.

Time will tell.......

I was wondering the same too.

Net Neutrality = ISPs are sending all 1's and 0's in and out equally . No special attention given to any.

This ISP (Tmobile) now says We will alter video from the Net - compress it, and let you have slightly more. But not ALL video sources. Not ALL video.

It's my job as a consumer to manage my own usage. I choose my plan to my usage. Not the ISP.

How about if cars have a governor on it. ONLY when you drove on the freeway, your max speed is automatically set to 55mph. You get better gas mileage, and its safer. Its what "people want". You in?

Don't save me from myself, "Im a grown-ass man"

-----------------------------------------------------------
The real truth. Phone companies make money on "spoilage". They sell you a 10GB/month plan, you use 5, they make extra.
They compress your video, you now use 4 a month, they make even more. It is in NO way for your benefit. Seriously....
No matter how they spin it.

Don't say you are doing it for ME. Almost all of their single line plans went up in price, was that for me too?

It is what it is........

But but but they're offering more...
And they are not changing the terms / price otherwise...

Now...if there was NO opt out / forced on 480p...i'd go postal..

And the thing with YouTube is getting fixed supposedly...a small percentage of the videos weren't working...

Yes prices are going up... Dangerous to close and reopen service at will like before.

I can account that data maximizer does indeed help your hotspot data last longer. I use my hotspot on my ps3 and I usually have to purchase about 15 dollars in top up data a message month. Ever since data maximizer I've had hotspot data to spare at the end of the month.

They seem to be compressing so much more, then just the video services they say are included.

YouTube , they say not included, but is still being compressed by default.
Because they do compress every video regardless of its free to watch or not. Proved it the other day on YouTube. 480p and below everything was fine. Then as soon as I turned on 720p it started to buffer like crazy.
