That's what they want you to believe. If you start living in fear, if you close your societies down, avoid public places, place "security" above civil values, they win. And if you start treating muslims or people of North African origin as suspicious, as not to be trusted, as "other", then you are conforming to their narrative and playing into their hands.

My heart goes out to the victims. But the only way to respond is to defy them and not become what they want you to be.

(I'll be passing through Charles de Gaulle on Friday evening - will toast the people of Paris while I'm there).

Even our fugly town-centre bridge over the river is showing solidarity; I hoped for a better photo on the way home this evening but the rush-hour traffic ruined the effect.

I spoke to a customer today whose home is in the Loire region of France. While still deeply upset over this senseless attack, she proudly mentioned that many of her friends back home are talking of a Xmas shopping excursion to Paris just out of defiance. "We survived worse 75 years ago" was how she put it.

There are 130 families mourning dead relatives right now who know with certainty that this was no "hoax". Unfortunately the nature of the internet will always encourage crazies, but there's no denying the grief of real people.

There are plenty of better venues to voice our political opinions, so let's use them.
