I use the pattern and have two trusted places and the setting that detects when you are carrying the phone turned on. If the phone has been idle for a certain amount of time it will ask me for the pattern even if I am in one of my trusted places. It's better than having to unlock it all the time though. The only reason I put the lock on in the first place was to use Android Pay or I would never be using it.

My experience with Smart Lock is similar, although I have my Pebble watch as a trusted device. Smart Lock usually keeps my phone unlocked, but it will ask me for my unlock PIN after a period of non-use.
