Root What is the best root related setup for the Nexus 4

Hi I am looking to purchase a LG Nexus 4 soon. I am looking for the best custom ROM and kernel and overclocked setup for the device. I am a heavy data user with social media platforms, streaming Pandora and also root related apps for device management. I prefer a custom ROM based on Android 4.4.4. Coming from the LG Optimus F6 with the unofficial Carbon Rom and a overclocked kernel with 1800 mhz with battery saver. Just looking for advice well in advance to getting this device in my hands. I have already run through how to unlock the bootloader and root the device. Where I want to go next is my question. Thanks in advance!

I posted this a while back. This is what I used on my Nexus 4 to get it running ASOP Marshmallow 6.0, rooted and complete with the latest TWRP recovery, SuperSU, GApps, firewalling and all my usual apps installed and working.

I suggest unless you have some particular need for 4.4.4 you should give 6.0 a try. 6.0 runs better on the Nexus 4 than 4.4.4, so well I don't see much point in overclocking. That's just liable to cause heat and stability problems with little reward. But if you insist, since this ROM is ASOP you can probably find an overclocking kernel to install. 6.0 comes with Doze, no need to add a battery saver. Most of them are worthless anyway.

IMHO his will make an excellent setup for what you intend to do. It has been rock-solid for me.

As for root apps, first thing I'd install is 3C tools:

A few weeks? Oh well, you have plenty of time to get a plan together. Give that stuff I linked in that post I linked serious consideration. It really does run nice on the Nexus 4.

And about must have apps for rooted phones besides 3C, which is terrific...

Warning: Do NOT use ES File Explorer! It's getting bloated and slow, but worse than that, it data mines your information and sends it to servers in China. Unsafe to use if it has internet access.

Check out X-plore for a file manager. An absolute killer app! Easily the best file manager available and safe.

AFWall+ is a must have for rooted devices:

Gotta have Root Toolkit:

You might like OS Monitor:

Network Connections is nice for keeping track of things, rooted or not:

System Panel is nice:

For unbricking (the Nexus 4 is really hard to truly brick, as in a totally unrecoverable condition) either TWRP recovery or I just do an RUU of 5.1.1.

For unrooting SuperSU should do the trick.

I've never used kdz files. I refuse to use any proprietary manufacturer's software like from Samsung, LG etc. So I would never consider using the LG Flash Tool. But that's just me...

Take a look at the apps I listed. Good tools you should have. Read that post of mine about installing 6.0 I linked. If you need anything else, just ask.

Curious...are you still thinking of using 4.4.4? If so, why? Marshmallow really runs nice on a Nexus 4.

I like the look of Kit Kat better. The Leon I have that I am giving to my mother has Lollipop I just don't like the UI very much. I am thinking about setting up CM 11 on the device when I get it. The theming I can do with that is great. As far as apps I only use Rom Tool Box Pro and Kernel Auditor. That is really all I need. I have downloaded CM11, Liquid Smooth and Paranoid Android ROMs in advance. I also have setup Wugs toolkit for the bootloader and the rooting. For all the LG devices I have worked with LG Flash Tool has been required for getting back to stock for soft bricks. I suppose Wugs toolkit does the same thing.

How is the camera quality on the device?

If you're going with 4.4.4 just because you like the UI, and thinking of overclocking, etc to get some speed, well, sorry, but IMHO you're making this way too complicated. My N4 running bone-stock 6.0 just might outrun your hot-rodded 4.4.4 conglomeration. ASOP 6.0 runs very well on a N4. Install the setup I posted, Nova Prime for customization of the UI and it just works.

Like I said before, TWRP will get you outta soft bricks, a RUU will the tougher ones. Anyway, I say screw CN11, Kernel Auditor, Wugs and LG Flash whatever, etc unless, of course, ya jus' wanna play around. If so, that's another thing and in that case to each their own poison. I kinda got tired of playin' around a long time ago and like actually using my devices now. But that's just me...

Oh, the camera seems.fine. I really haven't used it enough yet to pass meaningful judgement.
