ES File Explorer: Alternatives ?

I'm not totally resistant to change, but I was using this for a few years, before I was educated here. I have also DL'd a few of the alternatives and will be looking at them, too. aside from the 'worn shoe of comfort' File Manager provides, it really does do what I need, and I've never used it or similar tools for internet operations.
Sooner or later, you have to replace worn-out shoes, especially when they get stinky. Anything by CM is really stinky. Might as well get used to something else (cough...X-plore) sooner than later.

<respectful snip!>I don't understand why it's so hard to just move on to something better.
in large part, complacency/human nature, I'd say. in my case, I just don't have the energy to move on to something better, if I don't need to. and no, I'm not that way about everything, just this utility that works well enough as is (well, that and the Verizonized version of KitKat -- have they fixed all they broke in the Lollipop they rolled out, yet?)..
fwiw, I am looking at X-plore ;-)

If you are referring to anything from CM ... you have been warned ... you have a loaded gun pointed at your foot ... you have been warned ... it is time for us to stop warning you ... good luck with your (future) foot.

For Lollipop on Verizon ... Verizon skipped the buggy 5.0 on the Droid Turbo and went from 4.4.4 to 5.1 to eliminate the hassles. As a Droid Turbo owner I never encountered the bugs to which you refer. You might want to check this out.

thank-you for making it clear how you (and others) feel about CM.

as for Lollipop, I read numerous horror stories for the update for my phone, the Samsung Galaxy S5, which did not skip the buggy pre-5.1 version(s) -- that's was the primary reason I rooted the same week I got the phone this past June, to eliminate any forced OTA upgrade.

sorry for being OT of the thread, I'll stop now ;-)

It is incremental ...
  • In the past there was the problem of them sending cloud account information back to their home office. Use of ES for any cloud activity was asking for trouble.
  • Currently the "clean" option is added and you are forced to look at the main screen every time you load ES new. If you are not very cautious you are going to delete files you did not intend to delete.
The solutions would be ...
  • Stop copying account information and guarantee it in writing and back it up with a reward.
  • Allow the Clean option to be hidden like other options were hidden in the past and provide the same guarantee for potential future problems.
  • As in the past allow the user to define the screen to be displayed when loading ES.

I've been looking around a bit, but I couldn't find a comprehensive answer to the following question:

How much (if any) of a problem is the Baidu integration?

I have found answers ranging from "It's the devil!" to "Dude, chill". Is there even a simple answer?

1. Many, if not most, of their apps are ineffective or worse.
2. They're notorious offenders for throwing up pop up ads and scary sounding false alarms to turn your money into theirs.
3. Maybe worst of all, their apps data mine your information and send it to servers in China for who knows who to do who knows what with it.

See this:

...and this (DU Battery/DU Apps is the 'DU' in Baidu):

I hadn't tried Solid Explorer until the last few days. It's similar to FX File Explorer but I like FX a little better. Also, FX is by NextApp, a top-notch developer. FX has about 10x the number of installs as Solid. It's no way 10x better, but IMHO deserves to have the lead. FX File Explorer remains my #2 file manager.

BUT...neither one can match X-plore for fast efficiency or ease of use. And X-plore can do just about every trick in the book. The undisputed champ on my devices.

I heard a rumor that X-plore was being sold to Chetah Mobile.:p

JOKE!

Here's the bucket to clean up the mess from everyone in this thread whose head just exploded.

Sorry ... all I can say is that the Christmas spirit is upon me.

I just installed ...
ES File Explorer Pro

It supplies the customizations that I was looking for and does not force me to go to the accursed Homepage each time I load.

... Thom

Surely, you jest.

"Let's stop using ES File Explorer, because they have conducted themselves questionably. Instead, let's use ES File Explorer Pro"

Makes perfect sense.

I installed the Pro version to evaluate it.

I never used ES for anything other than local device access so the major problem with cloud access was not a problem for me.
Only known problem on local was their forcing Clean and forcing the use of Home screen when opening the homescreen are corrected by the Pro version.

There are references in Pro to it eliminating all advertising that exists in the free version. This might be a hint as to what is coming in the future.

They still need to fix the cloud management problem to be safer for all users.

I don't see any inconsistency with post #37.
