Here is the USA, privacy is still considered to be of top priority.

but, it seems that in China the rules have been upset....

I use Evernote to store my important papers 'in the cloud'....
up to now, it has been a secure place to stay.... since their servers are based in California, we are probably okay....
but, in China?
hmmmm

Yes, but the US Government has been using National Security Letters which by their very nature include gagging orders that prevent people talking about when they've been issued. So the fact that you only know of 2 hosts, may just mean that the letters are working.

(Here's another one for you.... exactly who cooperated with whom is a bit vague, but someone must have been helping them http://www.zdnet.com/article/snowden-docs-reveal-spy-agencies-sim-encryption-key-theft/ )

Without hero's like the EFF and Edward Snowden we'd know even less of what they are doing. In a strange way at least the Chinese government are being honest about what they are doing (and I hate the fact that I was able to write that last sentence).

I think we're still in the land of technology rather than Politics at the moment, but whenever its decided that we're not, I'm sure the mods will file it away.

Anyway... In other news. No need to worry about pesky encryption getting in the way of getting access to your files system.

“The gold standard in disk encryption is end-to-end encryption, where only you can unlock your disk. This is what most companies use, and it seems to work well,” says Matthew Green, professor of cryptography at Johns Hopkins University.
“But handing your keys to a company like Microsoft fundamentally changes the security properties of a disk encryption system.”
"Your computer is now only as secure as that database of keys held by Microsoft, which means it may be vulnerable to hackers, foreign governments, and people who can extort Microsoft employees.”
