Keyboard Issues

After 2 weeks of owning my Desire and coming from an iPhone I can honestly say I can't get on with the standard keyboard as I'm always hitting the adjacent keys no matter how many times I calibrate the damn thing.

Is it that the keys are too small? Have they crammed to many extras on there? Looking at my mates iPhone, there is more of gap between the keys. Why is the settings button there? Surely easier just to hit the menu button for that?

Do we really need the comma and full stop next to the space key. I would say space bar, but its not wide enough for that. (another annoyance as I keep missing it and hitting comma etc instead).

I think the predictive text and it remembering words is better than the iPhone though.

Is there a replacement keyboard i could try? I've had a quick dabble with those slide keyboard things, but don't think they are for me.

Any recommendations?

I always hit the wrong keys with the standard Android keyboard but I find the predictive text so good that I can type much faster than I can with the hardware qwertys on the market or the iphone keyboard.
My error rate is much lower on the iphone but I am slower because the prediction isn't as good. With the Desire it always seems to know which word I want. My only problem is the double press space to do a full stop. I can't find an option to disable that.

Swype seems to be a good keyboard but I haven't personally got on with it. There is another thread on here with a link for it.

I downloaded Thick Buttons today and it has made a world of difference and I can type with hardly any mistakes. I had to concentrate at first until I was sure it would always enlarge the ones I needed and now it is really quick.

I was so sick of deleting and retyping before on the standard keyboard, but I don't think it is only that the keys are small.

I think the glass you touch is floating too high over the key on the screen below so, hitting it at an angle means you miss the key you were going for. Or maybe I am over-thinking the whole thing...

Update on my keyboard woes.

Spent 2 weeks using "thick buttons", which was okay, but still nothing like the old iPhone keyboard I was used to. (although i do prefer TB to the stock Desire keyboard).

Anyway, searching around on AppBrain last night and found this; What is Smart Keyboard?

You can download a version for free that doesn't have the dictionary etc, but the full version is only 2 quid from the marketplace.

Only had it a day, but feel much more confident using it. :D
