Headset/Headphones problems

I had a problem on my first HTC Hero where after a while, when I unplugged my headphones - e.g. after listening to music, it would go into headset mode.

i.e. although no headset or headphones were attached, the Headset Icon would appear and you couldn't hear anything through the inbuilt speaker and the inbuilt microphone would not work.

I got orange to send me a replacement and now the same is happening.

Help! I have to reboot the phone to get it to work.

Further info:

- I'm using a set of sennheisser headphones, have tried another third party set and the same thing seems to happen.
- have installed the headset on/off widget but even when turning the phantom headset off via this, the speaker does not always work. Don't know what happens to the
- loudspeaker mode works but then switching this off doesn't guarantee the inbuilt speak/microphone will start working
- never used a bluetooth headset
- have updated the ROM to the new faster version, but this problem happened on my original phone with the older version too.

I wonder if this is a related issue to that some people have experienced where there headset does not work - as I say I'm not using one - but it seems perhaps the software or physical headphone/headset detection in the minijack socket is dodgy!?!??

Any ideas? Suggestions? Pleeeease!

Try this widget: toggleheadset - Project Hosting on Google Code, that could help. This more likely a software issue, not hardware.

Arrgh. At my wit's end...

As I say I already have the toggle headset widget. Have had the ROM upgrade too. Have had 2 Hero's and both do this.

Once I take out my headphones, the phone is in headset mode but there is no headset.

If I use the headset widget to toggle the mode of the phantom headset, then IF I play some music previously then on receiving/making a phone call the speaker will work. But the microphone does not.

If I don't play anything first then neither speaker nor microphone works.

You can put the phone into loudspeaker mode and hear what someone is saying even if the normal speaker is not working, but again the microphone is not working.

Only a reboot sorts this.

It really is very annoying - any ideas? Someone else has mentioned it in another thread:

Please note: this is not the headset not working problem - this is removing headphones results in phantom headset mode with microphone and speaker not working but headset icon appearing on the UI.

I have got exactly the same problem! By phone a HTC-employee told me this would be a software error and I had to bring it in. However, I cannot figure out how.. (Netherlands). So I mailed HTC Netherlands about it, but no answer so far...

Please contact me if you manage to fix the problem.

Well, I sent in my Hero few weeks ago, got it back and the problem is over. They put in a new mother board because the hardware is defect. I don't know for sure if this is related to using Sennheiser headphones, but I don't want to test this now..

New problem now is the speaker vibrates, like there's something loose inside the phone, like when a screw is not plugged in totally... So maybe I'll bring the Hero back in again..

I'm glad for you it can be fixed that way. But I think you have a different problem than mine (and Buttered_Monkey's).
I have also tried the update, several times, without succes. When my phone got repaired by HTC they clearly told me that the main chip was damaged and had to be replaced, that has nothing to do with a software issue.

But anyway, luckily for you it was much easier! :)
