putting a bigger girl on the cover of a major magazine is sending the wrong message. that being over weight is OK. can be normal. even worshipped

No it's not, it's sending the message that not being Size 0 is normal. Look at her face, neck. upper arms... do those look "overweight" to you? She also looks a darn sight healthier (and happier) than the majority of coiture/catwalk models. That is what society should be encouraging, not conformity to some arbitrary ideal of what a person should look like.

p.s. let's not pretend that the "Swimsuit Edition" is making a serious commentary. The title alone gives the game away. ;)

she is above the ideal healthy size

Unless you're her doctor you're in no position to say what "the ideal healthy size" actually is. ;)

I think the quote in this related article sums it up nicely:

"What defines beauty today?" SI Swimsuit Editor M.J. Day said in a statement Sunday. "The truth is, times have changed and one size does not fit all. Our position on beauty is well-known -- healthy, curvy, vivacious and bold. It's not a size."

Well I don't know hey.

I have had issues with doctors in the past for malpractice and arrogance... I find some doctors to be very scary and full of shit to be frank.

Sometimes they say "oh that lump on your leg is nothing don't worry about it! :D"

And then I find that my Aunty dies a long way down the line because it was actually cancer and took her life the so called "benign lump"... sometimes these doctors are just full of shit and should be suffocated from their horrid arrogance.

But anyway! I am just throwing that out there and believe that people should just love whatever they love or prefer - just like art.

Some love heavy death metal and are crazy and wild lol pun intended :D

And some love it soft and smooth and unobtrusive but lovely.... with a hint of sexy curiosity :D

Agree about doctors being full of it. I'm convinced that half the time they don't know what they are talking about. We have a local doctor who's standard tag line whenever you go for a consultation is "oh I don't think it's anything sinister". Seemingly regardless of what symptoms you present. I sometimes think of going in clutching my chest and gasping for air, just to see what the reaction is :)
They say you shouldn't self-diagnose using Google, but I'm starting to think that is the most reliable way of getting medical advice these days :)

Anyway back on topic, I do agree that we all have different views on what 'floats your boat'. Hey diversity, it's what makes life interesting!

They're all good! Not a one of them are fat or unhealthy looking.

I think there is a confusion to my post...

1. I think all 3 are hot.. sexy... IN their own ways.

2. beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Hailey is hottest.. that floats my boat.. all night long!

3. they could all be healthy .. or they could all be unhealthy.

what I am talking about.. is the promotion of a look that is NOT CLASIFIED as good healthy choices.
going with a PC cover... does not help public mindset for good living.
gives the overweight people less reason to try to make a change.
USA stay the course on the worlds fattest people.
it is sending the wrong message to the world...

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.... so "good healthy choices" is CLASSIFIED as what? Having hips and breasts within a certain proportion? Or just "floating your (particular) boat"?

Stop thinking of "healthy" as "thin". In all honesty, does that centre image look "fat" or even "overweight" to you? I'm genuinely curious, as all I see is a gorgeous young lady blessed with a generous upper and lower superstructure. :)

in the wild.. people every day.. as you go about your living..
sure there can be people of all sizes. and it is OK...
we are all different and it takes all kinds of people to make a healthy community.
you can like what ever you choose to like.

you can drive reckless if you choose.
you can smoke if you choose.
you can over drink every night if you choose.
you can go on vacation in the middle east or north korea if you choose
and this can be good or ok for these people. but in general.. it aint good in the long run.

I just don't think magazines should promote this type life style.

but facts are facts.
USA has the largest population of over weight people.
a lot of extra fat on the body is not healthy in the long run.. over all.

I am not against over weight people.. or dislike women with a few extra pounds.
i just don't think we should promote it .. make it the new "healthy look".
like 40 is the new 30.,, full-figure is not the new thin!

(yes, some people can be very healthy with the extra pounds. even look great with them on. but in general it should not be promoted.)

I think I covered all the logical fallacies in the old "task killer" thread. ;)

Facts are only facts if you make certain assumptions, otherwise they are only observational conclusions. As for promoting ideals, they have never been realistic for the general population and have little effect on reality other than making people who don't conform feel bad about themselves. Is that what you want to promote?

Do you honestly see skinny young girls looking at that and saying "Quick, get me a double cheeseburger, I've got to pack on some pounds."? Or the more likely scenario where a full figured girl sees someone she can identify with and feels good about it.

so you think.. there is a country out there.. that is more over weight than USA??
fact is.. USA is fat. we can not hide it.
global warm is fact. does not matter how many deny it.

yes.. if promoted enough.
it can change the mind set of the general population.. bit by bit.
smoking was seen as sexy and good for you.. when it was promoted as such.
it took a lot to turn the general population's thinking of smoking.

So if we put a picture of a skinny Eskimo with lung cancer on the cover of Sports Illustrated we can not only solve the USA's obesity problem, but stop global warming and eliminate tobacco use?

See how ridiculous the non-sequitur logic can get if we continue along these lines? Somebody might as well say "Hitler" and be done with it.

First off, smoking and climate change have NOTHING to do with this, so they are right out of the discussion. Secondly, we have to assume that there is a specific and measurable definition for "fat", and we must assume that not having a BMI in the ideal range is universally a bad thing. Even the medical community says it's only a guideline.

Here's 8 countries that have a higher percentage of overweight people.

What you are suggesting is a unilateral decision to not "promote" heaviness by never portraying a person outside of an arbitrary physical standard in any positive way. That firefighter who just saved a busload of nuns, children and puppies had a cheese steak last night? ... we can't put him on the news.

you are twisting words.
those are examples of how promotion and marketing can confuse the general public on a subject.
in one direction or another.

you can put that firefighter on the news.. he is a hero. put him on Time mag.
but he does not belong a swimsuit mag cover!

i was talking about denial of facts. usa is fat.
and we should take steps to correct this. not promote full-figure as the new thin.

Sports Illustrated.. Swimsuit edition...
that is a mag that is targeting a particular segment. and putting a full-figure women.
says something. and promotes something...
and i think it is a wrong message.

Nope, just pointing out the folly of your logical missteps. Sorry you missed the point of the hyperbole.

I <heart> irony.

Dan, you are a victim of your own admonition. You have been convinced that fat=bad and thin=good as an absolute truth even though both classifications are subjective. The question isn't if the population of the USA is increasing it's BMI average (which no one has denied, BTW) it's why do you want to believe so vehemently that being overweight is such a health risk that we should not be exposed to any positive image?

She is not obese, maybe a few extra pounds, but that is more healthy, and a better role model, than the typical anorexic looking stick figure. Remember Kate Moss and "heroin chic"?

Besides, SI isn't "promoting" anything besides magazine sales. In a world of unlimited free porn, they have people talking about a magazine with swimsuit models. I'd say that's mission accomplished on their part. They're out to make money, not a public service announcement.

Im a fan of the thicker/a little extra/plus size/small bbw and no one ever expects it from me because im 6ft1 and a fit 175ish . i run 5 or so miles a day 5days a week and hit the weights (nothing body builder like) and eat a mostly organic diet.

But good lord give me a pretty face latina with some extra. Can be up top but when i see wide hips thick thighs and a great big fat ass id follow her off a cliff lol

The lady ive been with the past 10 plus years definitely fits the bill. As teens (when we first met) it was intimidating because the consensus was "hey why are you with that chubby/ fat girl?"

However sometime in the last so many years the thickness has taken over and become the thin white blonde that ruled the 80s.

I hate kim k as much as anyone but credit must be given where due. She played apart of the thick movement.

I naturally like hispanic/latin women. Ive always been naturally draw and the older Ive gotten the more sense its made. In my opinion they seem to carry some extra weight better than some other ethnic backgrounds. Not sure why but just an observation.

Anyways. All the ppl that thought she was fat in hs now always say how lucky i am. Idk why but everyone started to like the full figured/thick .

Scientists say we are drawn to them because we subconsciously believe they are better candidates to conceive with than sticks
