Read meassage aloud in car

Hi,

After 5 years of using Windows Phones (and still no app for Sonos), I've decided to try Android and just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge! There are things I miss on my WP (loved the interface, but can live without it), but can now control my Sonos system (and other things). It also means I can dump Crapple iTunes and iPod. The main thing I miss is my car reading my text's.

How it used to be: Paired my WP with the car (Honda Civic 62 plate) and if I got a message while driving Cortana would read it out and give me an option at the end to reply.

How it is: Paired my S7 with the car...nothing.

I have hands free which works OK, and the bluetooth plays music which I can skip, control the volume etc from the builtin controls on the cars sterring wheel. Ijust can't get it to read text messages.

Is there a way I can do this with my S7? If not it is a very expensive mistake!

Yes your music and hands free will work fine as that's just over the bluetooth connection to the phone as you have found out by pairing it.

The Honda head unit uses HondaLink right? And that works over bluetooth, so it should be able to read out your SMS.

But I think you might need an Android app for the SMS features amongst others? not sure.

Read the head units manual

Or call a Honda dealer would be my next port of call.

You can say OK google read my last text message. I am not sure if it will come through your car speakers or not though.

Wow, I am going through the exact same issue. Long time WP user that loves the text in car feature and can't find something to work with android. Just bumping this up to see if anyone has more to add. I had tried several apps, including pay apps, and still nothing. Basically the functionality is that the phone, through the car Bluetooth speaker, notifies that a new text has arrived and asks if you would like the phone to read it. If "yes", then it reads it. Then, it asks if you would like to reply, if "yes" then you speak and it types what you say. It then verifies what you say and asks to send it. If "yes" it sends it. Totally great.

Any ideas on apps for the Galaxy? Or is this something the 8 will do?

Hi everyone,

I'm in exactly the same boat. Coming from being a long term Windows Phone user (only moved to Android as I can't renew the insurance on my Lumia 950 XL as it's now too old) I'm really surprised that reading your texts out over Bluetooth doesn't "just work" as it did with my Lumia.

It was Cortana that did the work on my Lumia, so I'm assuming on Android it needs something similar (Google Assistant, Cortana on Android etc). In fact I've ended up making my S8 as integrated with Microsoft services such as the Microsoft Launcher, the amazing Next lock screen (really is awesome), Outlook, OneDrive, Edge and Office.

Has anyone got any updates / had any success? I may give Google Assistant a try as I imagine that maybe that may well do what we want. Failing that I guess I need to hunt for an app...!

I'm also a long-time Windows Phone user who just switched to Android (Galaxy S8+) since Microsoft seems to have more or less abandoned WP and no one's developing for it any more. I had a hard time believing these phones don't support such a basic and obvious feature, but they don't seem to by default...

After trying a number of different apps, I found one that seems to work at least mostly reliably: "Read Text 2me" ... not as polished as Cortana, but it does the job.

Doesn't Samsung Bixby do a similar thing to Microsoft Cortana, like read aloud your messages and have voice control?

Bixby will read me a message if I say "Hi Bixby. Open Messages and read me the last message." But it doesn't do anything automatically. It just follows voice commands in the format "Open <app> and <action>. Nearly useless for me... I actually downloaded an app to remap the Bixby button to something else.
