ive spent the last few days ripping all my cds and dvds to flac, mp3 and mp4, and theyre all in respective folders on a portable HD. they come to about 300Gb on a 1Tb drive.

i now want to back this music up in case of disc failure. im thinking of google drive, as i have the htc m8, chromebook and a google account. the plan is i can use the android music player to play any of my music on the phone instead of deezer/spotify, plus its all there safely stored as a back up.

i tried connecting the HD to chromebook and cut and pasting the folders to 'google drive' but this didnt work, saying i didnt have enough space (even though i have 1Tb google space?). i then looked at uploading through 'google play music'. this didnt work either, when i hit upload music and direct to my folders, i press upload and nothing happens.

firstly, does anyone know why nothing seems to work? and secondly, is this actually the best way of backing up my music. yes i can buy another HD and copy it just in case, but id still like the opportunity to play any of my music wherever i am in the world (i dont mind using my phone data for this).

thanks a lot :)

When I did this a couple of years back... I used the Google music app on my PC... And then could drag and drop the lot into a folder and it synced them up.

It doesn't actually upload them all... But uses a pattern matching approach were it can, so that it plays it back from the music they have stored there.. Saves bandwidth but sometimes you can end up with a slightly different track in the library than you expect (eg. Radio edit rather than the sweary one ;) )

thanks mate, just tried this and its working! downloaded something called music manager which is currently uploading them to an old windows laptop thats about to die :)

the one snag with this is...... yes itll be fine for playback, but i wont have 'a safe place where all my datas backed up' in case of HD failure. this is where i could do with it being uploaded to something like google drive i spose?

thanks a lot

so just to be clear then..... itll upload my music using pattern matching and 'sweary track' becomes 'radio edit' on google play, but if i download back, i get 'sweary track' back to pc rather than radio edit?

altho im not entirely happy with this as a sole back up option as i ripped dvds too (to mp4), so i really do want some storage somewhere to upload all my stuff as a complete back up.

thanks a lot
