Running old games in a VM

It's a bank holiday weekend and I got a bit bored. So I fancied a trip down memory lane, and dug out my old copy of Ghost Recon for PC.
I installed it in a Windows 7 VM on Ubuntu. The game installed Ok, but when running it I get the initial splash screen, but my hopes were dashed. The game doesn't start.
Do you reckon it's not possible to do this? Driver issues?

You using Oracle Virtual Box? Have you got Enable 3D Acceleration checked, so that Direct-X can work properly? Also have you installed Guest Additions, which is the drivers that Windows requires to run properly in the VM.

This is how I got XP setup in Virtual Box on a Mac, that I use for a bit of retro gaming sometimes.
