also - is there a way to use odin to backup current firmware? I have a rogers i5700 and I would like to be able to restore my 1.5 firmware in case there are any problems.

Thank You
No. not using odin. Once you bite the bullet... erm some metaphors that suit that I can't think of right now.

The bullet remains bitten..

and your teeth hurt?

So I talked to my friendly neighbourhood wireless friend (from Wireless Wave which is technically where I got my Spica from) and he said that they've spent years repairing the jailbroken iPhones without issue and have been starting to see the occasional rooted android. Apparently to them it really doesn't matter if its rooted or not - not unless you're being a real jerk about it in which case they can come back with "oh well *technically* you broke the warranty by doing that."

So I'm biting the bullet. There are many things on my Rogers Spica I don't use (namely all the Rogers branding EXCEPT the account app - which I can download from the app store anyways!)

Seems to be relatively easy enough to do anyways....let's hope it goes okay.

Oh and I'm using Beerkan's firmware but the guide that Zephyr linked to (which I think is Faxian's but on another forum yes?).

Update: Almost bricked it the first time. Threatened it with being returned etc. and then got it to work the second time. I have been Eclaired. Just received a text message so I'm on the network. Just gonna double check in a few minutes once I have a chance....

@shewless: It was stuck at one of the steps in the Odin thing. It wasn't connecting properly. So I took out my battery and prayed and then when I put the battery back in it connected properly. I've been sending texts to my friends all morning so that's working. Don't know about MMS since I don't normally send those anyhow.

I just tried installing Titanium backup and it seems it doesn't have access to root. So I'm a little confused about that. Its like I *have* 2.1 but I don't have actual root access. So I'm going to try the Leshak's guide on samdroid and see if I can do it that way. Also going to see if I can manage to get those live wallpapers etc. as well - since I'm all for pretty! His samdroid mod looks like it'll be interesting (even if I'm not sure what all of it is for or why I need it.)

I also further tested the GPS when I went out to the bar last night and the phone nav/google maps did follow me while I was walking. I haven't tried the voice search yet but the icons are there. I downloaded Google Goggles and Gesture search and both work amazing. Everything is faster on my Spica now. I seem to have a bit more "free" RAM as well (1.5 had me at ~25MB unused while I seem to have ~30MB now on 2.1)

I suppose my only complaint is that I now only have three available rows of icons on the home screens (one has been taken up by the four icons that will always stay the same no matter which screen I have up - a dockbar I guess). That and most of the widgets aren't "centered" on one row, so I can't fit more than 2 2x1 widgets under each other. I can live with all that though (and really that bottom "dockbar" is rather useful. Especially when I finally figured out how to change those icons)

I'm considering doing this. Not only am I twiddling my thumbs waiting for the official update on my Spica via Rogers, but I'm assuming the same sort of wait when 2.2 is out too.

It sounded scary until I saw all these other Canadians updating their phones too. I've been concerned about getting a version that won't work on Rogers' network. I'm assuming 3G, etc. is all working correctly for you guys?

Another question: Will this remove my access to paid apps on the Android Market? I've bought a few so far and would like to continue to be able to buy more. Can any of you confirm that you can see paid apps on the market? And if not, is there a suitable workaround for the Spica (does that Market Enabler app work)?

Guys,

I bought this phone last week in India and 2.1 came in as factory loaded. Have installed a number of app from Market and works great.

Issues with mail for Exchange, standard software is giving error while config "Userid or password incorrect"

Installed Touch Down from market and still unable to connect. Mails are working fine on my E63 with the same config.

Any Suggestions?

3G works great - just write down your APN setting for Rogers and re-add them after you update.

It appears paid apps works... I had purchased open home on 1.5 and on my new firmware it recognized I had purchased it and allowed me to re-install.

I think my work exchange server enforces a password and that is why my exchange doesn't work.
I would be okay if I had to set a password on my device - but it doesn't even give me that option.. it just doesn't work instead!
Is there any way to set a pin on my device so that exchange sync will work?
Or is there any firmware that works with this?
THank you

@e4: I can't help you about the Exchange Server stuff because I don't have any email accounts that work off that. Closest I come to that is my College address but it runs off IMAP rather than anything else. I had to use Yahoo's credentials to send OUT mail too.

@Rogdor: All the paid apps that I had were available to redownload. The information about what you have paid and haven't it kept with Google rather than on the phone. Which is why you have to log into your gmail account. 3g works wonderfully and the whole phone seems much faster. I also seem to have a bit more "free memory" on 2.1 than I had on 1.5. The APN settings are also online (just google "Rogers APN" and they'll come up) which is where I found them (since I didn't write those down). For some reason when I went to "restore" APN settings through the app in the market it didn't work.

I used Beerkan's firmware version and then further modified it with Leshak's Samdroid version. I have root access now (apparently just installing JD1 only gets you a new version of Android but doesn't give you actual root access) with it now and live wallpapers work. My complaints from the previous post I made (dockbar and "uncentered" widgets) are completely gone with Leshak's Samdroid version.

Apparently the Samdroid version has a ton of APN listings but I haven't a clue where to find them. I ended up adding them manually.

I don't think I got the Apps2sd working either but I can live without that.

Voice search works though I'm not too sure about its accuracy. I went to google something, decided to try out the voice search and got a google search for something else. Just tried texting "Sorry" and it came up as "Screen" on my Spica. Maybe I'm just speaking wrong? I'll have to play around with that a little more.

So... how do you get live wallpapers...

@Zephyr: That is the one that I flashed on mine. Though somewhere on there it said you needed his LKmod 2.something so you need to do that one first. Basically I did all your guide (with Beerkan's firmware). Then I did the LKmod 2.whatever guide. Then I did THAT guide you just linked to.

I couldn't get Apps2SD working (I don't know why but I don't really care all that much). I think it had something to do with me being unable to actually format or have my SD card read by my PC (and so couldn't partition it).

I'm sorry to sound like a broken record.
Right now, I'm running Beerkan's firmware that I installed using ODIN. What upgrade is this LKmod2? And then once I do that do I just follow THIS guide?

Thanks for all the help!

After getting Beerkan's firmware on the Spica I didn't like a few things. Went over to samdroid.net and took a look through the forums.

I found this first - here. Which seems to actually ROOT the phone. That's the LKmod 2.02.

Followed those instructions to a T and tried doing the Apps2SD link at the bottom. (here - <3 Google Translate ;) ) For whatever reason it sort of works on my SD card. Some things are ON the SD card and others aren't. I was having problems with the SD card being read via a reader on my PC so I *think* that was part of MY problems with it.

Then I moved on to the Samdroid mod. Which is here.

Oh and apparently before you do this your supposed to unlock your phone (so you can use it with multiple providers I guess). I didn't do that and it still worked. Didn't have any real problems doing it either. *shrugs*
