Chomp and Textra

Both are by Delicious. I've had trouble with SMS with both on three different phones. Nexus S, Nexus 4, and now the Oppo. Both apps will run along fine for a certain length of time, then will start ignoring texts. I tried leaving the default messenger enabled and got duplicate texts. (I've forgotten to delete texts, and deleting usually helps for one day. I can have up to 500 texts. The Oppo informed me it has over 1300 slots for text.)

TMO texts from any other place than billing will come in. TMO billing won't. A couple of friends from Sprint will eventually call to see why I'm ignoring text messages. I'm simply not getting the texts.

I have a trouble ticket at TMO. Billing is showing texts sent. I'm not receiving them.

I put in the default messenger from the Oppo, and got all messages. The same happened on the Nexus phones, so it has to be the apps. Possibly TMO and my SIM. It isn't the phones.

The default messenger works, but it doesn't do sound notification. I need sound as phone will get buried under piles of paper or fabric depending on what I'm doing. It doesn't look like there are too many decent apps without a lot of caveats. I'm trying Zero. It works, but there's a notice on the bottom of the page that SMS is a service of Zero Launcher and to click it. I don't really want Zero, Apex is just fine. Zero also added a dialer and contacts but didn't override the default.

I want a minimal SMS. Textra was just fine. I've looked at Hello SMS, and the permissions for the camera are not too great. I've taken screen shots just by grabbing the phone wrong. I see Go is still around, but it looks like that is around to sell themes. Handcent has too much baggage.

What else is around for text and MMS? I don't mind buying the app if it works. (I did buy Chomp years ago)

Is there any freestanding app that will even just buzz if a text comes it?

BTW - I text kid in UK with Viber. That hasn't had any problems.

Viber is an Internet messaging service, so different from SMS.

But it is very odd, because as you know many people here use Textra without problems, and I've got about 5000 messages on my phone at the moment. Obviously different networks though - nobody on Sprint messages me for example.

Anyway, the only other message app I've tried recently was Evolve SMS, which I test drove last year. Less minimal than Textra, seemed fine except a little slower in places. Free with in-app purchase for some options, so costs nothing to give it a trial.

I just scanned through your post sorry zuben but did you say you disabled the stock app? I learned from experience that doing that prevents you from receiving sms unless (like GO Sms (bad app)) it has an option in settings for "stock sms app uninstalled"
Sorry if I'm way off mate (tl;dr lol)

I find that interesting I have always disabled my stock message app and used a thirdparty app ofcourse its not so third party now, now its Hangouts. But before hangouts I used handsent and gosms always disabled the stock app and always have gotten my text. Both sms and mms

On my Oppo, I use the stock ColorOS text app. I use it really, because it's the only one I've found where Message delivery reports works, and I know the recipient has received the SMS on their phone. Plus it also does everything else I require.

Yeah, but can you make it buzz, ring or make some other noise? I can't find anything to make noise. The phone tends to get buried by my projects so I need to hear it. If it's buried, a flashing light can't be seen.

If the apps needed the stock messenger, they should not have worked in the first place.
Trouble is, they did. For at least 6 months until I started missing messages.

Why from only certain places? I can get any message from TMO user, at any time.
I just can't get TMO billing, and Sprint is the other carrier. I went to a TMO store to ask about SIM card. The rep sent texts that came from the same short code as any TMO message. I got the messages. Probably all from local numbers. But my Sprint friends are local, too and Sprint can be intermittent. Not sure where TMO billing is - offices all over country. Think TMO help is in Washington state.

That sounds like carrier. None of the phones are TMO branded. But carrier should let any TMO messages through and I'm not getting the billing. It also sounds like some kind of security block, and it has to be on Android. Both Nexus were rooted. S ran CM. The 4 was rooted but ran stock. The Oppo isn't rooted.

I read TMO fora. The Iphone wasn't TMO branded for years. No complaints about missing texts on TMO. Think it got branded last year for wifi calling. TMO uses UMTS or something like it. You can call from any wifi, even if you don't have TMO service where you are.
The minutes did come out of your allowance since you were accessing TMO service through wifi.

Viber will mess with ringtones at times, but that's more of a hassle than a problem especially if you use ringtones like I do. Standard users would probably never notice.

Got rid of Zero SMS and trying QKSMS. Zero looked good, seemed to work, but wanted you to install the dialler and the launcher. Apex launcher is working just fine. I bought it.

I'd prefer to pay for some of these apps. Just for the privilege of NOT getting the extras.
I don't need Emoji, I don't need FB links imported, I don't need skins. I'd prefer to buy the basic service and not be bothered with in-app purchases.

The problem I'm having usually hits MMS. The pic is too big, and sometimes even Emoji can cause a glitch. I'm not having an MMS problem and I don't use Emoji deliberately.
Some apps will change ;P into an Emoji by default and while my Sprint friends might use an Emoji, TMO billing will not.
