Help No SMS or Whatsapp notifications in status bar

I have a Motorola Moto G (3rd generation) phone w/ Android 6.0.1.

Since a day or so I do not get any notifications of missed SMS (text messages) or Whatsapp messages in the status bar at the top of my screen anymore. Missed telephone calls still works. Suffice to say that there's no notification sound either when I receive an SMS or Whatsapp.

Haw can I solve this?

Thanks for the answer. I thought I did that already. Did it again and selected "Blocked apps" from the pull-down menu at the top and I selected "Show system" via the three-dotted context menu button at the top right. And there was the system SMS app blocked. Sent me a test SMS and lo and behold: got me a notification in the notification area and a sound. Strangely enough this solved the Whatsapp problem too even-though I changed nothing there (it wasn't blocked or anything...).
