I'd love to know how many still have UDP.

My wife and I are on a family plan with her mom (uses a non smartphone) & this month our bill jumped from about $150 to $220! We have the UDP and she and I currently have the S3 since we buy our phones outright (usually from ebay) in order not to change our plan and lose the UD. But now we are seriously thinking about changing it. We use about 10-12gb/month combined so if we get the 18gb plan with new phones & phone payments/month we're still looking at about $200/month. I do want a new phone but I don't want to lose the UDP since we don't have good internet at home other than satellite and my son likes to use Netflix etc (he's 7). Just so confused and angry. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

there's your problem right there, turn OFF Netflix. all of that streaming video is gobbling up your data plan....

here at home, I have ADSL with 10.4 mBps. If one of us is watching a Netflix movie, my computers slow way down.... I do a speed test with www.speedof.me and it shows that I only have 4 mbps available for surfing the internet....

I have 4 lines, on the Verizon XL T-Shirt plan with 6 gb/month..... we never use it all, but, we have ADSL whereas you don't....

1st of all buying a new phone thru VZW does not change your UDP.... I also prefer to pick them up elsewhere as you avoid the extra $10/month fee for being on Contract.... not to mention, the high price of a phone over 24 months.

Check with www.swappa.com to see if you can find a better phone. that is where I found my Galaxy Note 4 in 'brand new' condition, lots of accessories, etc.... the guy said he was tired of it, he gets a new phone every 4 months....

3 out 4 lines on my account still have UDP. My account resets the 9th of each month. Currently I'm at 18 gig. My daughter is at 26 gig, and my wife at 5. I used to use less data, but after Verizon announced the $20 per line monthly increase, I decided to stop using wifi. F**k Verizon.

If Verizon does pull the plug, I would jump on the ATT /Direct TV UDP offer. T-Mobile & Sprint still do not have good coverage in my area (Southern Poconos), although I'm starting to see some 4G coverage from T-Mobile. Finger's crossed.

This is a little OT but it's still about data plans and Verizon specifically.

Does anyone know if they can throttle individual users on a family plan?

I use around 3 GB per month, and my husband uses maybe half that. We're on that share everything plan, but my stepson uses a TON of data every cycle (well, it's a ton to us). He easily uses three or four times what my husband and I use combined. It's getting old.

Is it possible to have his speeds (and his alone) throttled? I know I must totally sound like "evil stepmother" here, but I'm really not the one annoyed; it's my husband who is tired of having to buy extra GBs. We're thinking that, if he knows his data is going to be curbed if he uses too much, he'll use it more wisely.

Verizon cannot throttle your data connection. It's part of an agreement VZW made with the FCC to obtain the 700 mzh spectrum. Verizon tried to implement data throttling, but quickly pulled the plug when the FCC intervened.

I too still have UDP w/hotspot that I pay an additional $30.00 a month for. When Verizon was killing off UDP I added the hotspot so when we go on driving trips our son can watch videos on his laptop or tablet. I average about 8gb a month. And when the day comes that Verizon forces all off UDP that is the day I drop down to a "dumb" phone or even a prepaid phone. I refuse to pay more for less. I have been with Verizon since the end of 1998, almost 16 years.

I use the paid version of FoxFi for my hotspot needs. One time fee of $7.99. It's available in the Play Store.

ummm, that is not what www.speedof.me shows when you do a speed test....

the 1st two or 3 seconds you get full speed for extremely fast web page responses, but then after that, it throttles back about half.

I check my VZW speeds from time to time.... it is a generally good service all the way around, but they all throttle your speeds. it is just off hand explained as "bandwidth restrictions due to overload demand on cell site capacity"... uh huh.

Hmm. I'll have to pay better attention to my bandwidth speeds.

I still have UDP, but I may bite I the new plans that went I effect today. Looking at 8Gb for $70, plus $20 for the phone. The data rolls over to the next month, but drops after that. So if you use 2Gb one month, next month you have 8 plus the 6 from last month. Then if you only use 4 that month, you have 8 plus 4 the next month. I only average 3Gb per month anyway, with the occasional 12Gb month, so this would be perfect. Still checking into it.

How does that save you money?

I have UDP. So does my eldest daughter, and husband. Husband has an original BlackBerry Curve, so UDP is wasted on him, but once he gets a "real" phone, it will be indispensable. Son has 5 GB data (all on my plan) for $49.99 month. He keeps WiFi on 95% of time, doesn't stream music, and only plays some online games. No issues. My youngest has an old plan where I pay for 2 GB but get double. 4 GB for $29.99. The 3 unlimited lines went up to $49.99 month. I tether my tablet to mine, and daughter tethers her tablet to hers. At work, WiFi is spotty, so youngest tethers her phone to mine. Have no desire to get new plan.

Currently I have the Nationwide plan at $60 plus UDP at $50, that's $110. The new plan would be $70 for data plus $20 for phone access. $20 is $20. But with my 22% corp discount, it comes out less since there's no discount on line access. $85.76 current vs $74.60 new plan. But $11 is $11. Plus taxes, etc. of course.

I still have UDP and use around 100 GB a month. Even though they claim they're cancelling data plans for those that use over 100 GB a month (that would include me) I haven't received any notifications. I have also upgraded to a Note 7 and am financing the phone on their monthly plan. If they decide to pull the plug, I'm going to go straight to their store and make them take the Note 7 back. Them trying to get me to pay for a phone for 24 months with no service just seems illegal.

I technically still have UDP as of now. I used the BB method just over 2 years ago to get the HTC One M8. All was good until my contract expired. Then all of a sudden my sim card could not be recognized. Switched it at the VZW store and all was good until 9/1. Have not been able to get the M8 to recognize the sim. I've switched the sim and nothing. Switched back to my Galaxy Nexus (with a sim adapter) and was able to get a data connection until I restarted the phone. Now, I get nothing. So it looks like I'll be giving the finger to VZW here pretty soon...

Well I finally caved and switched to T-Mobile. Got a deal with three lines, all unlimited everything, for $112/month. Beats VZ and my $182/month bill. The have upped the "deprioritization" cap to 30GB and give you 12GB tethering PER LINE. They also have a kick back scheme for using less than 2GB so the cost can go down.

Of course, they are T-Mobile. We will have to see how their network stands up. So far its been good but I haven't done a lot of moving around yet.

FWIW
