Note 7 specs - whoa! (if it becomes a reality..)

So I've been trying to find some kind of benchmarks to figure out how much "better" the N7 will be with the 820 chipset compared to my old N4 with the 805 chipset. Best I can find is old articles saying the 810 is about 25% faster than the 805, and the 820 is about 30% better than the 810...

So the N7 will be about 50% faster vs the N4? does that sound about right? Has anyone found a benchmark that shows the 820 directly compared to the 805?

What else?
Ram = 3gb(n4) vs 4gb(n7)
Display = 1080 vs 4k?
onboard ram, 32gb vs ???
Battery life - N7 is bigger, but battery life? Not sure who wins...

Part of me wants to jump on the N7, another part says my n4 is still running strong, wait for the N8...

Here's an image from one of the Benchmarks leaked of what was/is believed to be the Note 7 running with the Snapdragon 820 (or 821 or 823, depending on what rumor is actually correct)

note-7-r-bench.jpg

By comparison, here is the list of Android phones from the geekbench site (same benchmark), which also has the Note 4 marks listed

https://browser.primatelabs.com/android-benchmarks

To save you some time, the Note 4 scored 1145 (Single Core) and 4033 (Multi Core), so performance increase does appear to be almost at 50% for Single Core, while multi-core is closer to 25%.

I'm not big on going by benchmarks, but I was even happy with my Note 3 performance for 2.5 years, until it was finally showing its age. Some things that are definitely factoring in for me though.

1) Overall size, if dimensions are accurate, puts the N7 in either physically smaller overall than the N5, or right around the same size.

2) Return of the microSD

Everything else that has been mentioned is just gravy. I've heard some horror stories with the N4 after Marshmallow update though. My relatives who have the N4 have been having all kinds of issues.

Marshmallow has not been all bad for me. I think my signal strength has gone down a bit, and I get a bit more general lag, but overall it is not major.

Physically smaller would be great. Splashproof would be huge (My N4 is the first phone I have had for more than a year and not drowned). Camera, Meh, more megapixels does not make a better camera.

Thanks for the benchmarks. +50% for single core seems good - I read most cell phone processes are not multi-threaded, so single core power is good.

Humm...

Thanks, y'all-

That's good that you haven't had issues since the Marshmallow update. That's the only thing that I've really seen about people wanting to upgrade from the Note 4, simply due to issues they couldn't troubleshoot after the upgrade in OS.

All signs have pointed towards the phone being same waterproof certification as the S7. For the camera, I totally agree. I think the marketing folks have tried to use more MP to sell the devices, without people realizing that isn't the factor that will mostly improve the quality of the picture.

I will say, I have had a lot of nuisance app crashes and a few odd ball reboots in the last month or two. not sure if it is Marshmellow. Phone was rock solid for the past year +, though.

Yeah, that is actually one of the things that my relatives noticed (random reboots), but for both of my relatives that have the Note 4, their battery life dropped off the cliff.

Cases, I love my Tech21 portfolio case for my Note 4. I see This one on Amazon that is similar.

Also, CURVED tempered glass screen protectors? Who would have thunk it?

Jerry

Thought I had responded to this before, but one thing to be very careful of, when it comes to the curved glass tempered glass protectors. Most of the reviews, for the S7 Edge curved tempered glass protectors, indicated that they did not stay on that well and the glass would lift at the edges, which would allow dust paticles to get in and be trapped under the tempered glass.

I have one on my Blackberry Priv and it seemed to be much better than the reviews for the S7 Edge (and Note Edge) curved tempered glass protectors, until I noticed that there was a dust particle that got in on the bottom, as well as the center, of the glass protector. I didn't really care, since the device still worked fine and overall the screen was protected.

Just something to keep in mind, prior to jumping in on a tempered glass protector that accomodates curved edge design.

This also an issue on the Note 4, which has slightly curved edges to the outside of the display. All the tempered screen protectors for the Note 4 have to be made a bit smaller than the actual display because of this, and even then they are more likely to peel up an allow dust or particles under.

Yeah, it's a similar situation with the Mate 8, but I notice it more on the Priv and I had a tempered glass pre-installed on my Note Edge, when I bought it. That thing came off whenever I pressed on the screen, so I've been running naked ever since. Just seems to be a bigger issue on curved screens than on ones that are mostly flat (even with a slightly countoured lip).

I posted this information back on June 3rd, so I wanted to quote it just for comparison sake of what the latest "rumor" article stated. From Talk Android's trusted source, that divulged "details" of a production model Note 7, it's apparently "thicker" than the Note 5.

Looking at the 2 differing dimensions that were leaked, early on, that actually does make sense because 7.8 and 7.9, bumps up the thickness form the Note 5. The Talk Android article also said that, despite being a thicker device, it actually doesn't "feel" thicker at all. They likely didn't look at the width of the Note 5 (76.1mm), which is significantly wider (1.6mm and 2.2mm difference, respectively) than the leaked dimensions below (I was extremely happy with that portion of the dimensions). Many people don't give much credence to mm on dimensions, but it can actually translate between a device being more difficult to hold vs. comfortable, w/ just a small mm or even portion of a mm. I've realized this, when noticing the huge difference between the Note 4 and Note 3 (as far as height of the device).

I just need to get the physical dimensions, but I'd be down with a Edge setup like that. I don't know that it would be as squared off as indicated on the renders, but overall dimensions don't seem to be bad at all

http://phandroid.com/2016/06/03/samsung-galaxy-note-6-7-pictures-leak/

The pic on the phandroid article is pretty small, so you can't see the dimensions, but Android Authority posted a much clearer idea of the size:

http://www.androidauthority.com/exclusive-galaxy-note-6-diagram-696359/
153 mm x 74.5 mm x 7.8 mm

Overall, that would make for a smaller device than both the Note 4 and 5, assuming those dimensions are 100% the same as the production model. Either way, if it does indeed come with a microSD slot again, I'll be swooping up a Note 6/7 on release date!

Wow, GSM Arena listed the numbers, on the other render, that were hard to read on the picture:
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_6_recreated_based_on_leaked_blueprints-news-18610.php

153.5mm x 73.9mm x 7.9mm

Either way, it still would translate to a device that is less wide than the Note 5.

So

I actually am very curious about this statement from that article:

The iris scanner uses infrared technology to work in the dark but doing so with glasses will be tricky.

I don't know much about IR when it comes to cameras, but would that type of technology be useful for the camera as well or would the IR have to be integrated into the camera lens (e.g. for night vision type pics).

Wow, so in that article the battery size is only 3500 mah. The S7 Edge has a 3600 mah I think. Why the hell would they put a SMALLER battery in the N7 than the smaller S7? Disappointing if true.

Yeah. Doesn't really make sense to me either, regarding the 3500mah. And if that does end up being true, I bet Samsung already has a PR statement ready to go, trying to "justify" why they had to go with a 3500 vs. the 3600 used in the S7 edge. They always do. Just like they had PR statements about why they couldn't incorporate microSD last year and even before that, there was PR b.s. justification why they could only offer the 16gb version of the Note 2, in the US, while having 32/64 available outside the US. And of course, the following iteration would always end up having a component that was complained about, yet the phone cost around the same price...LOL.

Samsung didn't realize the impact of not having a microSD slot, until they saw sales of the S6/S6 Edge and Note 5 drop compared to previous models.

Wow, talk about leaks
http://www.gsmarena.com/new_samsung...ecs_info_and_preliminary_price-news-19681.php

Disappointed that 3500 is looking like the battery capacity, but not so much that I won't get it. Heck, I survived with the 3000 in the Priv. But, I may stick with the Mate 8 as my personal daily driver, since the Mate 8 has a 4000 (or higher) battery.

And these are the dimensions. Is significantly less wide than the Note 5, slightly taller and slightly thicker.
153.5mm x 73.9mm x 7.9 mm

I do want to point something out with what Samsung accomplished on the Note 7, assuming the specs add up. These are the dimensions of the Droid Z and Droid Z Force

Z
153.3X75.3X5.19

Z Force
155.9X75.8X6.99

Both phones have a 5.5 inch screen. The closer comparison is really with the Z Force, which also has a 3500 mah battery. That phone is wider and taller than the Note 3 and only beats it based on level of thickness. That's also without the moto mods, which would add thickness.

So, assuming the dimensions hold up, I think the Note 7 might be considered one of the most comfortable devices to hold, for 5.5inch or larger device. For even more frame of reference, it's even less wide and less thick than the LG G3, which in my opinion, was the best screen to body ratio on a phone ever! I still wish manufacturers would try to duplicate that similar screen to body ratio of the LG G3. It wasn't a tall phone at all, but fit a 5.5 inch screen.

im with the part of me wants to jump on the N7, another parts says my n4 is still running strong, wait for the n8
I'm in the same boat, if the latest rumours are true then I'll just buy a new battery for my note 4 and wait another year, bit annoying though as hopes were high for the note 5 and then Samsung disappointed so big and now it looks like they are doing it again

I'm ready to move on from my Note 4. Honestly I liked my Note 3 better and didn't feel like the N4 was an upgrade. Having Oculus on the N4 is nice, but that's about it. I think there will be some disappointment from the original rumors from months ago for the N7, but overall I expect it will be a worthy upgrade. Let's see how things look once we actually get to see what the phone will be. We are so close to the announcement - hopefully it is more positive than negative.
