Having trouble getting the battery to charge

I've tried different cords with no success. Sometimes I plug it in and it says fully charged in 5 or 6 hours or whatever, and sometimes it says twice that or even more than a day. I've had it plugged in for almost 6 hours now and it's actually gone down to 4%. It's been off and on slow for a week or two. Is my battery going? Is it hard to change it? Is there a video showing how? I can't afford a new phone right now. I've had my phone for 2 yrs.

So for a few days the battery charged fine with a different charger. Now it's doing it again so I really think it's the battery and not the charger/cord. Last night it was at around 95% and said 4 hours to charge or some crazy number. I rebooted the phone and it said 6 minutes or something more reasonable. Does this behavior point to a dying battery? I'll look at the links for replacing it and see if I think I can manage it.

thanks everyone, for the help and links!

I ordered a battery and right before it arrived, my phone started acting normally again. But it didn't last. Today it was plugged in for about 4 hours and went from 11% to 17% in that time. So I went ahead and replaced it. It wasn't too hard even though the took kit I got is pretty much junk. I managed though so I'm hoping it helps.

I hope your new battery works well, Gale65. Although my two-and-a-bit-year-old Nexus 5 is OK so far, I may at some stage need to replace the battery; nothing lasts for ever.
May I ask where you got your replacement battery? (I see you're in 'the land of the free', whereas I'm in 'the old country' so I may not find it easy to use your supplier anyway.)

I wonder if it's the port thing that the cable plugs into. I don't have a wireless charger to try though and I'm not sure i want to buy one for this.
You might be right. Is there anywhere you can try a wireless charger, perhaps at a store? If you explain that you'll buy the wireless charger if it works, they might let you try it out in the store. The only problem is that a wireless charger is much slower than a wired one, so some patience will be needed.

Or you could just take the risk and buy one. The price on eBay is less than $3.

It's worse than ever today. I woke up with it at 4% even though it had been plugged in all night. I switched to another charger and 2 hours later it was up to a whopping 6% with 23 hours to full. Kept fiddling with it and now about 8 hours later it's up to 60% and says 17 hours to full. I ordered a wireless charger. I paid more than $3 but I went ahead and used amazon prime's 1 day shipping so I will get it on Monday. If that doesn't work I guess I need to decide which new phone to buy. :(

eta: once I finally get it fully charged, it seems to discharge at a normal rate. I guess I should be thankful for the little things.

Something I've noticed. If it's below 70-75% or so, it has trouble charging. I plugged it in at around 68% and 2 hours later it was at 66%. Rebooted and took the cord in and out and it seemed to start charging. But once it's above that sweet spot of 70-75% it seems to charge fine.

My charger is due to arrive today so I'll report back about how that works. I'm getting the feeling I'll be springing for a new phone though. I just can't decide which one. I'll look for recent threads asking what people think of the new google phones vs the samsung galaxy line.

wireless charging not working at all. I took the phone out of the case, squeezed in lots of places (in case of contacts not making contact-I read this somewhere), repositioned the phone several ways, nothing. The charging cable and plug in thing that came with the wireless charger will charge the phone so I know they are fine. I'm getting frustrated with this whole thing.
