my garden tools are dull... cant cut the bushes.. and the lawn mower blade aint cuttin it.

other than buying new tools.. or buying sharpening tools.
where can I go to get these things sharpened?

I called home depot.. they say they don't do that kind of thing.

thanks

Hmm very interesting hey... I wonder why they don't have that kind of service there in the shop?? That's odd we usually have that kind of thing all over the place... Usually knife sharperners and that sort of thing... I am surprised Yankie Doodle Land doesn't have that sort of basic thing :D

xD

looool just kidding depends on the city :D

I guess at least :)

We got an epic "hovering lawn mower" in the garage and it's freaking awesome!!!

Got it's blades sharpened for only like I think it was 100 bucks or something like that?

I love that lawn mower I think I am like from Star Wars when I around with it :D:D:D

just called the nearest ACE Hardware.... bingo.. winner winner chicken dinner...
They do still offer this service..

Law mower blades for $8

Bush shears for $8 (flat blades)

but I think I will stop by Harbor Freight and see how much sharpeners cost.. I think the big cost is getting a good vice to hold it.
might do it myself....

harbor Freight..
had a new bush shears for $13...
and a block for sharpening tools/knives for $3...
or go to Ace and pay $8 for someone to do it...

I stood there for 30 mins .. trying to decide which to get!

finally decided to get the block... so I can sharpen other things around the house..
worked out fine...

Running a lawn care business, sharpening blades is a more than weekly occurrence. There is more than keeping an edge on a blade to consider. The original angle they were ground to should be maintained. They also should be balanced. If you grind more off of one side than the other the blade will not be balanced and cause your mower to vibrate and suffer excessive wear. One sharpening will not get you into trouble. But keep this in mind moving forward. Multiple sharpening could cause a problem if you don't pay attention to what you are doing.

When you remove your mower blade for sharpening it's a great time to give it some inspection. Most all mower blades have a trailing fin. The fin creates a vacuum which pulls the grass erect so that all long grass blades are cut. The area where the that trailing fin rises from the flat surface of the blade will suffer erosion over time. If the metal looks stressed or is excessively thin at the point where it rises from the horizontal/flat portion of the blade it's time to be replaced.

Best of luck in your sharpening adventure.

Hmm very fascinating... I wonder if there is some kind of tool to measure how much mass is on one side compared to the other to check for an imbalance?

Hmmm very interesting... in my line of work we need to calibrate everything - all equipment rigorously as even the slightest defect can be devastating and catastrophic... and get 1000's if not millions (if it is nuclear) of people killed...

In my line of work you have to be extremely careful because the slightest error can get everyone killed... even for miles and miles... I wonder how it would be measured to check for balance on a blade though?

I find that very interesting :)

I looooove this kind of topic... @olbriar my friend how does that work to test for whether or not the blade is evenly balanced?

I am quite confident that on an aircraft that with an airplane fan blade(s) it would be dire and have one of the most highest priority (if not the highest) to have the blade very thoroughly inspected all over (including an evenly balanced blade) to ensure there are 0 errors or defects because it would be catastrophic if it was unbalanced... even though it is highly unlikely that an aircraft blade / propeller would require sharping from time to time (maybe it does?) it would be extremely serious if it was not evenly balance....

Hmmmmm.... very very very interesting ...... I already know for certain applications on aircraft you need X-RAYS to check for certain structural fabrication defects within welding and other fabrication processes to ensure it either meets or surpasses industry standards... I think it depends on the type of aircraft too - I am talking about the "more" serious aircraft though... it costs a fortune to do the radio-graphic testing... but totally necessary other wise it would be dangerous to fly it...also sometimes I have heard of Ultrasound being used to check for all sorts of fabrication defects however never used ultrasound myself...

For example in space craft they go into extreme and insane maddening details to ensure it is almost bullet proof to go into space... I am quite confident all sorts of testing is done to ensure she is all good to go... way more so than a "simple" blade...

I really want to know - how does one test for an imbalance in the blade??

You got me hooked now :D

I loooove this kind of topic sorry just sayin :D

Found this because you have me wondering now:

Ahh very cool!

ok ok.. .. funny!
that reminds me of another issue

next spring.. in the back of my parent's house.. the yard is next to the wooded area of a park.
on the other side of the fence.. the vines and bushes have gone wild!... we have had great wet weather the last few yrs.
I can no longer see the ground!!! seriously!!!

what is the best plan of attack? with least amount of physical work?
I have tried the simple weed poisons.. they kill them, but in a few months...
they are back!

That's gardening for you - it's a constant battle, I mean job, keeping it under control.
I, like you am not an enthusiastic gardener, which is unfortunate as our garden is comparatively large.
We have an area of trees, which are owned by the council on one side of our fence. In fact the roots have now severely weakened the fence posts, causing fence panels to collapse. If they don't turn up soon, I plan to fire up the chainsaw and do a bit of hacking myself. Haha!
