Still waiting for 6.0.1

Hi all. I still seem to be waiting for the 6.0.1 update. Other versions seem to have been updated months ago and I can't seem to find out if mine should have it yet. Is anyone else aware if this version of the Moto G should have 6.0.1 yet?

Did you follow the instructions in the link you provided for checking when you did not get an automatic notification?

Yes and nothing. I've seen something about clearing the cache.

Is the question that you are on 6.0 and where is 6.0.1?

6.0 Marshmallow was released by Motorola/Lenova several months after other phone makes. Hopefully they take extra time to check it out before releasing it. Just repeating what I've heard/read elsewhere.

I was under the impression that Motorola updates their phones quite quickly. That's one of the reasons I bought one.

I'm on 6.0 but have seen others have had 6.0.1 for a while so was wondering if there was a reason why it hasn't arrived for me. It would be handy if they provided a page showing which areas have been done and which are waiting. It just seems a long time for an update that was released in march.

6.0.1 was a bug correction for 6.0 on some phones. I am running 6.0 on the Turbo 2.

If you go to settings and check updates it will tell you if one is available. That is essentially the information you are looking for.

Regarding the release schedule for Motorola at the beginning of 2016, 6.0 was a "major" (whatever that means) update so it could explain the delay I reported.

I just clicked on System Updates on my 3G 2015 and it says my phone is up to date at 6.0. Thom is very knowledgeable and as he says, 6.0.1 may not be significant or applicable for Moto Android phones.

It includes a few things I'd like. You can now mute the camera and it apparently includes a few fixes Inc one where the dialer crashes.

The link actually doesn't say the update is available. It says what the update contains.

You check availability by going to your phone and checking updates.

The release notes are usually posted before the software goes to soak test.

A couple things...

The Virgin Mobile version of the Moto G 2015 is completely rootable, it has a bootloader than can be unlocked, TWRP is available, thus it can be rooted on Lollipop or Marshmallow.

As far as the storage thing goes, Marshmallow changed some things so look at the basics first... each time you connect it to your computer, you must enable MTP file transfers by pulling down the notification drop-down and selecting "USB for charging. Select for more options" and in the resulting menu select Transfer Files (MTP), and your storage should show up on your computer now.

If that doesn't fix it for you, the next step is to rebuild the media databases, since Android doesn't allow direct read/write of storage, it emulates it and the files are accessible via a database, sometimes it gets... well... out of sync, and we need to manually resync it. To do this, first disconnect your USB cable and then go to Settings - Apps and tap the 3 dot menu and select Show System, then scroll down and fine External Storage and Media Storage, in each one of these tap into it and then tap Storage and then Clear Data. Once that is complete, reboot the device. Once the device appears to be back up and fully booted, wait at least 5 minutes for the databases to rebuild. There is no indication this is occurring or completed so the time may vary depending on content, now reconnect your cable and change to MTP mode and you should be good to go.

The next step if that doesn't correct the problem is to clear the cache partition, there are clear instructions on Moto's website for this.

I don't even know what the Moto software is... MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is built into Windows, Mac, and Linux. I haven't really noticed it being very slow either, well, no slower than any other USB 2.0 device.

Glad you finally figured it all out though.

Well I've waited and waited and my Moto G 2015 is still on the January 2016 patch update. My friends G 2nd Gen is now on August 2015 patch level. What's going on?

Yeh I've seen that but I thought they had committed to at least 2 years of updates. Why update the year older 2nd gen model first it doesn't make sense.

Not much Lenovo does with Moto makes much sense these days... G2 hasn't seen an update since last summer to my knowledge though, but it doesn't surprise me anymore.

Google's Motorola committed to 2 years of quick software updates... Lenovo's Motorola, which is 10% of its work force remaining since they moved almost all jobs to Lenovo's existing Chinese infrastructure, does not promise or even suggest that. Look at the web pages for new Moto devices, do you see the big headers about fast updates, two Android versions, or any mention of the update policy at all? Nope, because Lenovo doesn't care, they want you to buy a new device every year. To Lenovo, Moto is just a name and not the philosophy that Google had it going for.

My Moto X Pure Edition and Moto G3 are my last devices which will bear the Moto name... My son just replaced his G3 with an Axon 7 Mini when they were on sale last week, he loves it.

Annoyingly my G3 2014 has received another update and is now on October 16 patch level but my wife's G3 2015 is still on January 2016 patches. I just don't know why they would still update the older model over the new one. I wonder if they have them mixed up

Well my Moto G 2015 has downloaded a 300+ Mb update today. States it's security, stability and something else. How odd that after a whole year of no updates they would suddenly send one out.
It'll have to wait until tomorrow to install, I'll post what the update does

I have just got a moto g 3rd 2 gb - and it came with 6.0.1. already loaded.
I had little expectation to be able to connect to my pc as I am still on win xp with only service pack 2 ! I have no moto program installed. I was sort of relying on the otg for file transfers.

I plugged it in just to see - as said - initially it sets to charge only. Touch and open the header box - choose mtp - and bingo, my old xp sees my phone and sd as removable drive !

6.0.1 is available for some Moto G 2015 variants, so that doesn't surprise me.

Also, Win XP does not have any support for any MTP, unless you installed Media Transfer Protocol Porting Kit from Microsoft at some point, which is the most likely case.

I believe for XP, you need Service Pack 3 and Windows Media Player 11 installed in order for it to support MTP. Of course the venerable old XP has been discontinued for quite a while now. End of life and unsupported by Microsoft, so if you got something that doesn't work with it, good luck!

For information Android went to MTP, because the internal storage on Android devices is now unified EXT4 rather than having separate and limited FAT partitions. EXT4 is a native and secure format for Android's Linux kernel, but Windows can't mount and read it natively.
