I don't see anywhere to enable that in my wifi or advanced wifi settings.

If you want to set a limit for how much data your Android smartphone uses over the course of a month (or any time period), plus a warning that tells you when you are approaching that limit, once again visit Settings, Data usage. Make sure the monthly usage cycle matches that of your phone contract (don't assume it refreshes from the 1st of each month).
In Data usage you will see a large graph detailing how much data you have used over the course of the month. Choose a maximum amount of data that can be used in a month, and when Android should warn you that you are close to that limit. Drag the two horizontal bars across the graph to reflect these choices. Other option is to

1.Open the Google Play Store app .

2 Tap Menu Settings.

3. Tap Auto-update apps.

4. Select an option: Auto update apps at any time: Updates apps at any time, using either Wi-Fi or mobile data.

You're missing the point. System updates shouldn't be downloading whenever they want, with no warning, over mobile data. That's not what used to happen, & something is malfunctioning that caused each of us who have posted here, to have that happen.

This has nothing to do with the Play Store, that's completely different than what we're having an issue with.

Yeah, completely missing the point. Nothing to do with app updates. This thread concerns system updates being downloaded over cellular data with no prior notification. No option to change this behavior seems to exist either. I already had the Google Play store setting set to not update apps automatically and I still received an OTA system update using my cellular data.

Using the limit also doesn't work for me. I stream music on TMo which doesn't count against my data usage, but my phone has no idea. If I set a data limit I'm actually well below the TMo limit. I'd have to subtract my music usage. It's doable, but an extra step. And as others have already said, this is something that should NOT be happening anyways.

No clue what problem that is, and no. This is just a report for downloading OS OTA updates over cell service.

The other point to make is setting the limit won't help because all it can do is report that data HAS been consumed. Too little, too late.

I just thought I'd update this thread now that I have received the October patch. This time I received a notification that there was a patch available for download and I had the option to download it or not. Seeing as I was at home I switched on wifi and downloaded and installed it.

So this time it worked exactly as we all expected it should. I'd be interested in hearing if it is working correctly for the others that had the issue.

Worked exactly as you describe for me, too .. but then, it always worked that way for System Updates. I seem to recall there is an option to download over mobile data, but it's not the default.

It's always worked this way for me with other phones. This was my first experience with a Nexus and Nougat. I want the updates, one of the reasons I went with a Nexus was timely security and OS updates. I just don't want them downloading over my cellular data.

Anyhow it appears to be sorted for the time being. I guess we'll see what happens next month.

I'm getting a lot of activity on that help forum post again. Looks like the issue is not resolved. I turned off the automatic updates option to try to prevent it from happening to me again. FWIW, my November patch worked fine.

Odd that it seemed to behave for October but we're getting new reports for the November patch.

I noticed that too. I've actually been living almost entirely on wifi since that happened to me, since at home & at work I'm able to be on wifi. When I do turn on data it's turned back off again as soon as I no longer need it.

Until I see clear evidence that this isn't going to be a problem, this is unfortunately how I intend to use my phone. I had to pay for extra data usage before & I'm trying to keep from having to again, for something I didn't even have any control over.

Is it possible that the download started while connected to a WiFi network and then continued over the mobile network?

(Just trying to collect data to take back over there.

I responded over there as well. I know when mine did it that wasn't the case. It downloaded on my way home from work where I have WiFi switched off all day. It could be possible that having it switched off vs. just not connected is an issue.
