Root CyanogenMod 5.0.7 (Android 2.1) on post e911 magic

hrmm, since the radio and hboot is available by themselves without doing the whole euro flash and stock flash then I'm wondering if the standard downgrade method would work on an already rooted (new radio) phone. I can't see why it wouldn't but I'm asking at xd to be sure.
The cyan rom seems to be unavailable right now.

You get really spoiled after running anything >1.5. Hard to go back even with the excellent cursorsense.

You're lucky you didn't get saddled with that buggy mandatory update. Now that is a piece of crap ROM.

nope, I stayed away from that noise. My unlocked phone is not theirs and will never run their crippleware. However the contract phone is used by my kids and even they used the term "laggy" and other complaints. I did the euro flash and then cursorsense and they've been happy ever since.

I nearly bricked when the RUU failed at the end and left me with only fastboot that would fail further attempts. I had to download and flash the latest official RUU which this phone has never seen, ewww. Then start over until finally getting to the 1.6 cyan. That looked familiar from the old days and worked great. This morning I moved over to the 2.1 rom. Funny how even with a wipe I quickly got my apps back after the google sync.

Only gripe I have is that I now have a rogers logo for a second at boot up. It is just a little thing but it was nice for so long to be unbranded which is nice on an unlocked phone that doesn't belong to them. I might do the euro flash again to unbrand and then a manual radio downgrade if I can find it as an .img vs a .zip via the RUU.

This rom is so far the fastest 2.1 and most stable that I've tried. We'll see how it goes.

I really hope you get this quick enough, but there's no need to go through all that hassle.

ostebaronen.dk — Change splash screen on HTC Magic

Awesome page, and he has a really nice selection of splash screens you can use.

Oh, and if you explore the page a little, he has a tutorial for changing the animated splash-screen too, though I must say, I really like the Cyanogen Modded Nexus One animation.

Excellent! I wasn't going to tackle a whole RUU process again today and this is even better. This rom is doing very well so if we can stay off the R sniff test then I'm happy. I'm happy to give up Sense when I can get this kind of speed and flexibility. Sense and other goodies can come later.

So far the 5.x is working great. No sudden lags and unexplained hangs like other 2.1s after a few days. One issue I have that I've seen on another room is if I had playing music the night before and paused it before plugging into the cradle the music would start playing again after pulling it out of the cradle in the morning. Scared me the first time and there wasn't any status bar item to pull down, had to dig for the app to stop it.

LOL, I probably would have dropped it.

It happened again this morning but this time I only giggled. I guess it will keep doing that until I reboot. Other roms might get sleep death after going on cradle so this issue is minor for now.

I survived the weekend and still have data so that's good. Phone is still behaving well with no lagging. Camera works but isn't perfect, pics save normally. It seems that the radio is giving me slower 3G speeds but hard to say since the network isn't always >5M.

Did you get the Rogers splash screen replaced?

Great Guide, I am very happy to have the better market app, and way more available apps.... Although i have no clue where to begin with all these apps now!lol

I do miss sense UI already though, anyone know a good picture widget like the sense one? Or contact widget, dialer app, messaging widget.

The dialer app, is probably the one I will miss most, was really handy to be able to just start spelling names or numbers.

I also don't have voice to text everywhere, but noticed GBDs post about installing the HTC Keyboard, I'll look for that. Maybe drop that in your guide.

Also a bit of a problem, I don't have data anyways (not worth the extra cash to me, maybe if they had a 10$ 150MB plan or something) and so I get annoying text messages about attempted data use. With E911 I could turn network data off entirely, but I cannot find that option with Cyan and can only turn it to 2G only. So I'll still get annoying txts.

Wow, long post, I'll stop here. LOL

To turn off your data you can download "Quick settings" from the market. It has an option for toggling wireless data on and off.

For SMS widget you can download and install Handcent SMS from the market. The on screen widget is only an ICON that will show you the number of unread messages, but when you have incomming SMS it will pop up a screen with the message even if the phone is locked.

This weekend I'll update my guide to point to a download location for the HTC Keyboard or if preferred (It's what I'm using) a version of swype that will work for you.

Sorry, I can't help with the picture widget. I never used it so I haven't looked for a replacement.

Also never used widgets for Dialer or Contacts so I can't help you with those either. I can suggest however that you try LauncherPro Beta from the Market. It gives you the ability to have from 1-7 home screens and it also keeps 4 icons on your screen at all times at the bottom with the application launcher button. They are Dialer, Contacts, SMS and Web

hope I've been of some help.

I'll try those out thanks! I actually was lucky enough to sign up for the Swype beta when it was open, so I have the official Swype and love it! I hear slide IT is just as good though and easier to get (market).

I just want to test out the voice to text, but will probably stick with Swype as it is awesome.

One more quick question, does your phone now say ROGERS ROGERS everywhere (ie when pulling down notifications, or on the lock screen).

Here is a link to a post over at XDA, This will add the ability to show/hide the PLMN/SPN lables into the spare parts settings that come with CyanogenMod.

[MOD][CM5.0.7] Spare Parts + Framework Mods Part 2 - xda-developers

Download the version for Dream/Saphire and flash it through recovery. As always make sure you perform a nandroid backup before flashing anything.

File name when downloaded is 270510_DreamSapphire_Framework_Mod_Update.zip and it has a md5sum of c614aa8d41d5427c5946a1191c964468

there is a lot of flexibility to make it as you want. A bit more Sense like could be:

But I got over the senseui and trimmed back a bit::

you can hit the right button as in many apps to pull up the search.

hint, try it from a home screen or anywhere else.

For me the better cheap way is data only and drop the voice. ;)
