Bluetooth Connection causing notifications volume to be muted

Hi,
Whenever I establish a Bluetooth connection the notifications volume is being muted causing me to miss emails, text messages and meeting notices. I've tried changing the notification volume, however the phone automatically mutes it again. Any suggestions on how I can change this setting?

With one of our vehicles (Toyota), when the phone connects, it connects for calls and music. When it is setup like that, notifications are usually muted. I have to go into the BT settings on the radio and turn off the "connect for music" to get it working normally again.

Thanks for the suggestion. I typically listen to music from my phone to both my vehicle and my work computer so I'll need the music stream.
