Cyanogen or Xenon?

I'm trying to decide which firmware to put on a spare Samsung Galaxy S3 somebody gave me (or whether just to keep the stock firmware). I have another old beat-up S3 with a cracked screen and a missing volume button, which I'm planning to keep for development purposes. But I would like to be able to easily upload a development version of my app to both phones. My app sometimes (very rarely) crashes, but I never saw that while the phone was hooked up to the development machine, and could never see the app log with the problem happening. That's a separate issue, but it would be nice if there were something relevant already built into the alternative firmware I'll be installing.

I've never tried alternative firmware on a phone (I have on an Android-based e-reader, but that was a long time ago and was very tedious, as far as I remember).

My current candidates are XenonHD and Cyanogen.

My criteria are:

  • speed
  • support for other devices so I can keep using something I'm familiar with -- Cyanogen wins here.
  • ease of installation and use
  • additional application development/troubleshooting tools
Could someone comment on how these firmware alternatives work from this point of view?

To be able to test your app it would be best to have the most current Android version available. Stock S3 stopped at 4.4 I believe. . Cyanogen would be the best bet for on-going support. I am not a huge CyanogenMod fan, but for your purposes I think it is the best fit.
In my opinion.
Thank you! What don't you like about CyanogenMod? And is it possible and advisable to run later Android versions on S3?
