Help Nexus 6P Homescreen Icons & Update/s

Hi everyone, brand new to this forum. My new Nexus 6P turned up today and whilst first impressions are favourable i do have a couple of issues already. Here goes. The homescreen icons are way too large and no matter what i do in the display settings they stay the same. I even switched the phone off and back on again and it's still the same, i'm at a loss as to how to solve this so can anyone advise please? Also when i looked at the build no it says 6.0. When i read the reviews on this phone i was led to believe there would be updates as and when they came out. I thought 7.0 was out already so should i have had a notification as regards an update? Sorry if i sound a bit dumb but this is all a bit new to me. Appreciate some help. Thanks.

As for the update issue. That should come from your Carrier.
If you really want to get to know your device you could always manual upgrade. The 6P is on 7.1.1 now and the images are available.

That all looks a bit scarey to me to be honest. Sorry i appear naive but i'm all new to this android experience. I'm not exactly sure what i'm supposed to do with the link you sent me & would it involve possibly messing my new phone up.

Still, alternatively, you can find and install firmware previous versions. Either update the same version over the same old. Well .. or use a third-party launcher.

Hey @johnnyreggae71, welcome to our AndroidForums!

I also have a Nexus 6P and I heartily second @Bg260's excellent suggestion of using Nova Launcher. Using it will indeed solve your icon size issues and it has a ton of other features that you'll enjoy, too. Just ping us back here in this thread if you need help installing / using / setting it up...easy peasy, really

Also, if you've just received the device, it's likely you'll soon receive an OTA bumping you up to version 7.0. I'm currently on 7.0 with build NBD91K and I've heard that 7.1 (same version that the Pixel devices have) will be rolling-out shortly if they haven't already.

Yeah, it's not for everyone. If your worried you should just wait for the OTA. As far as messing up the device, it's possible but Nexus devices are a lot less difficult than most, dare I say....easy.

Hi Guys. Finally sorted! Have now got my 6p udated from version 6 to 7 through the OTA and as regarding the homescreen icons finally managed to downsize them. Strange i could not do that on version 6 but never mind it does work on 7. A big thank you to those who tried to help. P.S; can i allocate photos and personal ringtones to those in my contacts and if so how do you do that please?

For your other question, select the Contacts icon from your home screen or app drawn, select / focus on the contact you wish to update and then, for the contact photo, do this:

for the ring tone, select the three vertical dots (~~ellipses~~ ellipsis) on the top right of the screen and then:
