Can someone help me out? I can not seem to wrap my mind around how this works!

I have my own number that I have had for 30+ years. If I port my number to Google then how does it ring to my new phone that has its own new number?

Thanks for any help you can give :)

Let me rephrase this. I have a number that starts with 797 which I will port. My new phone has a number that starts with 329. When someone calls or emails the 797 number how do I make it ring or notify me on the 329 number? How do I add the 329 number so it works?

You need to go to the Google Voice website on a PC.
I used this tutorial to set up a Wi-Fi only phone. Maybe it can help you.:)

(I didn't port a number, just have a GV number and Verizon number but...)

In settings for Google Voice (online, not the app) you set your forwarding number/info. So, you would set your new number there. It will walk you through how to do it on the phone (dial *73 or whatever it is). Then you'd set up voicemail and how to handle calls as well.

On your phone you'd install the GV app and set it to 'make all calls' from GV so your carrier number would not be used.

For SMS/MMS you'd want to use Hangouts.

There are a lot of ways to it and a lot of things it can do, but that would get you started :)

In online settings you would have the 797 set to forward to 329. When someone calls your 797 (GV) it gets forwarded to your carrier number but it's all transparent.
What carrier do you have? I think some work a touch differently with GV. Maybe.
