Help Battery Life Issues

Hi new tro the forum but feel a small rant required :),

I got my x10 1.5 weeks ago. The first one went back after 2 days with poor battery life and it was exchanged by the CFW. Second one had more or less the same issue, I installed ATK and found it made very little difference on the phone. After 3 hours of sending 10 texts and checking the status a few times I had used 15% of the battery.

I have now told CFW to either sort it out or change to different phone as for SE to indicated that the will last for up to 450 in standby I assumed(whether right or wrong) that I might see at least 150 hours.

Furthermore, SE replied to me was that they couldn't help me any further on the issue, if I had turned off all the obvious stuff like, 3g, brightness, timeout etc

To be honest I am very disappointed. Personally as we get charged so much for these phones (whether PAYG or Montlhy contracts) manufacturers should be made to indicate how the phone will perform in a realistic world. There should be a std usage criteria (say 20 texts a day 1 hour worth of conversation, music for 1 hour) so people can make informed decisions. After all , if you bought a car and the manufacturer said in the right cricumstancfes your car will do 150mph, and you only got a top speed of 50mph in the real world, you might just complain.

As a functional device ,its very good and ticks all the boxes for me, its just the poor battery life. Having to charge the phone once or even twice a day is not exactly Green.

Sorry guys rant over, just find it very very disappointing that on paper its a superb device but in reality is let down by the most funtimental component.

M.

Well firstly your gonna have to use the phone for over a week before the battery "improves" on this phone.

But there isn't a "Smartphone" on the market today that your going to get more than a days use out of.

(And before anyone mentions a Iphone, the Iphone does'nt have multitasking, a 1Ghz Processor or a 4 Inch screen.)

Ok so yes Android 1.6 does'nt help and when SE give us 2.1 and maybe even 2.2 it should improve a bit but i am still not expecting miracles.

The problem is phone's are getting more advanced and at a fast rate but Battery Technology is not.

Until theres a major breakthrough in Battery Technology then don't expect a Smartphone to last more than a day (or 2 days at the most).

I agree in part. A smartphone should be smart enough to adapt to the user's needs. I probably use 10% of this phone's capabilities most of the time. However, it still drains the battery at an alarming rate! It really needs a simple "non-smart" mode, where it functions purely as a regular phone for times when that's all you want and when battery life is at a premium.

Until then, these phones are a long way from 'smart'.

i've had my x10 since its release in the UK, given it a few full charges and discharges and i've not had any problems with the battery. longest i've had it going was about 4 days with regular sms use and occasional minor calling. with heavy use i've had it around 36 hours usage at most but i feel this is fine and isn't causing me any problems.

Don't know if its been mentioned, but my X10 has a strange habit which I suspect is slowly knackering the battery:

I usually charge the phone over night, putting it on 'airplane mode' - effectively ensuring there's nothing happening with the phone over night. I have woken in the morning to find that the charge indicator light is not flashing - but have only just noticed that the screen icon indeed does still show it is charging. A visit to Settings shows me that the phone, despite being plugged in and not being used, managed to drain up to 10% of battery charge - unoticed until now.

So, whereas i've been unplugging the phone at what I though would be a 100% charge, i've actually been unplugging it at 90%. A quick complaint to Orange should get me a new battery, but lesson is, check the screen icon before unplugging.

Your phone probably charged to 100% but then went down to 90%.

There probably is nothing wrong with your battery.

If you get JuicePlotter you will be able to see that it has charged to100%, but then it appears that SE x10 software cuts off the charging till it drains below 90%, then it will charge again.

Personally, I like the phone a lot but the battery issues are a real negative for me.

I've recently changed my homescreen from home to timescape and its had a major effect on my battery life. Running for 3 hours today and only dropped to 94% when normally we'd be below 80% by now

I didn't have too many widgets on my homescreen either polling data. Facebook, timescape, weather and sky news were prob only ones that were polling data and they weren't set to do it often so not sure why its made a difference

I don't think its the battery, but for a phone which is in Airport mode, presumably making no wireless connections, its worrying that the software drains 10% between charge finish (I guess about 1am and 7.00am).

I'm hoping that 2.1 will sort out the standby battery consumption.

I've read somewhere that the charge cycle switching off between 100% and 90% is normal. I haven't actually got the phone yet but have been tinkering with the GF's - have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in to get from 90% charge to 100%? Maybe unplugging the cable side-steps this *safety??* feature and allows 100% charge again?

I've managed to set the woman's phone up so that it lasts a couple of days with light usage without the need for juice. I've set her up with TaskPanel which allows you to put things like voicedialler, MoxierMail, plugin managers etc etc into the kill list so the processes are killed once the screen is switched off. Y5 battery saver is also a good piece of software - switches off your wifi when not in range of remembered networks.

I've also turned off Google Synch as well which was continuously synching her contacts, email and calendar; you can do all those things manually anyway so it might be best to turn off synch if you don't need everything up-to-date constantly. I think there's a few more options in the Synchrisation settings in the phone that might help with the battery life as well.

Hope this helps.

Ok I think ive had enough of my Xperia now, ive had it 8 week and have noticed from day one that the battery life is awful im lucky to get 8 hours out of it in between charges, without even using my phone, if i do i get about 4 and that might only be using it for a few texts. It was suggested by a well known phone shop that i download Task Killer as I have noticed Facebook and Twitter etc, downloading updates even though ive selected that they never upgrade. Task Killer doesnt seem to make a difference. I keep checking it and it seems to still be allowing tasks to run even though ive told them not to. What also concerns me though is how hot my phone gets sometimes, last week I had to turn the phone off and take the battery out to allow it to cool down. Please can anyone give me an idea whats wrong with it?

...man there are a lot of complaints about the battery of the X10 ... i for one have no problems what so ever ,i have the phone for about 2 weeks and i managed to keep the juice flowing for 4 days with 2h of music playing every day and calling about an hour and a half every day (i use ES Task Manager & Startup Cleaner ;i killed every app except essential ones & Media scape + Time scape) - i allways charge it up to 100% on airplane mode and allways drain the battery full (till it shuts down) - with gaming & wi-fi about 1-2 days !
>I have the French-for-made unlocked phone (maybe these guys have better-made ones?) ; it was bought for me and delivered in romania where i live.
anyway ... try doing/using what i say here and maybe you can get it up to 3-4D like me ... btw > turn off self-updating ,wi-fi , gps ,bth and other apps/functions that you do not need !
Good Luck ;)

I have now downloaded JuiceDefender after trying something different recommended to me by carphonewarehouse, im finding that I still need to recharge my battery daily but am now going about 15 hours between charges with approx 30mins of phone use and 30mins of internet browsing, im still not convinced that this is anywhere near what it should be but im a little bit happier

For those who are experiencing drain in idle usage I suggest getting a new launcher. You can try helix launcher or adw l auncher. I prefer adw launcher, slicker!

In idle usage, id lose like 4% after 9 hours or so!! Even works well during normal usage..
Worth a try!!

Hope it helps!

I've been experimenting with different launchers and so far I've tried helix, adw and zoid.

I found helix a bit buggy and not exactly the layout I wanted but I might go back and try again after updates.

I tried Zoid and it was pretty good but missing a few things like I couldn't have the shortcuts I wanted in the bottom bar (that appears on all screens) it improved battery life too, I didn't use helix long enough to tell.

I then tried ADW and it had almost everything I wanted (maybe a few more shortcuts on the bottom launch bar)

BUT!!! My battery wasn't lasting as long and I notice on the taskkiller widget the available memory was about 120-130mb now I thought this was a little low so I switched back to Zoid and the available memory is now 165-175mb and my battery is lasting longer again AND I can now put 5 shortcuts on the bottom bar perfect!

I might go back and give helix another go but from my experience I would avoid ADW and I highly recommend zoid after the recent update

the memory changes alot.. it has its ups and downz.. by the time you restart your phone you can get back that much but it still changes over time! for me adw works fine and i did an overnight test today.. lost 0% whilst i was asleep for around 6 and a half hrs!!

from my experience i would suggest people give it a try, as no harm can really be done from it plus you only know until u've tried it yourself!!

This was not just one occasion this was everytime I checked it sometimes it was down to around 90mb free, usage went from 2-3days down to 1 consistently.
It might be the apps I'm running but I don't really have that much just battery, clock, handscent, math alarm clock and taskiller running all the time.

I called Rogers to complain about my battery lasting only about approx. 8 hours with wifi off. They sent me a replacement phone. I installed only gmail and moxier for my work exchange account. After a few days of using the new phone it lasted about the same as my phone which is about 8-10 hours. So will send refurbished phone back.

Called Sony to complain about the ridiculous battery. First person said there is an update for the phone.Told him I was with Rogers from Canada and he said no problem. So I tried the update service and it said I was running the latest updates available.
He also said that the x-10 does not have a task killer therefore to download one and it will certainly help.
Called back again to say that the update the first person suggested was not available. She said when the update service says it has the latest update there is an option to update anyways and re-install the firmware. Said to say yes. I asked if she was sure it would work since this will erase everything and I have to re-install everything again. She put me on hold, came back saying that Rogers is a branded phone therefore I was right re-installing the same firmware would do nothing since the Rogers update was not available but would be soon(no date available).
She also repeated the same thing like the first guy that the x-10 does not automatically kill tasks therefore to install a task killer.
She then said to turn off wifi, bluetooth 3g, etc. Which i replied why have a smartphone if I can't use it.
After telling her I was disappointed since I use this work for work and if I am not near a charger and have a 10 hour day my phone goes dead, I would like an extra battery. She first said no then came back saying since the Rogers update is not yet available she would send me one as a courtesy.
Also would like to mention while using my replacement phone I charged my original phone to full before removing the sim card. 5 days later the phone still had 34% charge left.

If you've still got wifi, bluetooth and 3g on then no wonder your phone isn't lasting. This thing has a 1ghz processor in it, it's a modern smartphone to only get a day out of it is normal. Turn the brightness down, turn off wifi, bluetooth and 3G off until you need them or get something like juice defender to turn them on periodically.
The battery gets better with age so discharge it a few times.

Only had the phone 4 days. I don't think am on my 5th full charge just yet. But so far am 13 hrs since the last full charge. The only app i've installed is Advanced Task Killer. I this 13 hour period i've had over an hours call time, sent about 30 sms, timescape, messaging, alarm clock all running. Got it setup to update Timescape every 3 hours. WiFi time i'd estimate about an hour.

So far its holding up well so i'll continue to monitor its progress and maybe install some different Apps too experiment
