Help Is there a way to close all apps?

Hi, I am new to the Droid Turbo, recently coming off of a Galaxy S5.

One thing I've noticed is that there seems to be no way to close all open apps at the same time, as I could do on my Samsung. This seems to be a no-brainer for a feature, as it would probably improve performance and memory.

Any suggestions?

Just so we're all clear: Although it makes things visually neater to "close all," it has absolutely no effect on the phone itself -- though it might still make you happy.

The "recent apps" button merely shows those apps that you have accessed, regardless of whether they are running or not. "Closing" them out of that screen is merely a cosmetic change: it just drops them off this list of things you've accessed. Now, suffering from a certain amount of OCD myself, I understand why you might want to "close all" of those, but it won't change the operation of your phone one whit. (Though if you've been accessing a naughty app that you don't want anyone to see if they have your phone in their hand, this could make sense.)

If you want to "close" recent apps -- as in "stop them from running" -- you would go to Settings > apps and scroll right to "Running". Then click on the one you want to stop, and press the "stop" button. This may have very little effect, since a system service that's required to run will merely re-start itself. But if there's a rogue app that keeps running for no reason, by all means make yourself happy and stop it. What's the harm?

So, there's no practical reason to "close all." But if it gives you an emotional lift to empty out your list of recent apps from time to time, knock yourself out! Happiness is important!!

I don't have a Droid to confirm this but I think it has not been totally removed, but it is hidden away in developer settings. This is because it's unnecessary and poor pranctice. Android is quite capable of handling running processes if allowed to. Manually interfering can actually result in poorer performance. For more please see this:

There is no "close all" apps. In the notification shade, there is a close all notifications, but not in the list of recent apps.

There should never be a need to close all apps. It's unnecessary on Android; if you are having a problem with an app, you can swipe it away, but performance and battery life is worse when you do manage to close all apps on a Motorola phone.

As Crashdamage said, there is a Developer Setting to destroy all apps when user exits them. Do not use this. Do not use any developer settings without a full expert knowledge of what you are doing. As we have seen recently on these forums, it's quite easy to brick your phone by playing with settings you don't understand. A developer would have a specific reason to want that behavior; it's not normal.

Re-read my earlier post to understand app behavior in Android. A phone is quite different from a desktop computer. Well-written phone apps don't use any excess resources when they are not in use. "Stopping" or "closing" them is like unscrewing your light bulbs when you leave the house. Just wastes time and saves you nothing.

Most apps either go into complete hibernation or occasionally access the network for important updates (like checking for email). In fact, if you turn some apps off, they'll restart themselves because your phone needs them to be functioning. There has been enough study and discussion of this point to make it dead certain that killing off normal apps is not going to improve your life.

Occasionally a badly designed app will start to suck up system resources (battery or data) for no good reason, and in that case you can kill it off as described in the earlier post. If you find an app is doing this, delete it; you really don't want an app like that on your phone.

These are all fun digressions ... but they are digressions ...

The question was really how to remove all entries in the Recent Apps list. The answer is that there is none in an un-root-ed 5.1 system on the Turbo.

Point of interest ... the Developer option of Don't keep activities will terminate the activity but the app is still listed in the Recent Apps list.

Second point of interest ... if you want to prevent an app from listing in the Recent Apps list ... you can use the Tasker Launch App action and select the option of Exclude from recent apps.

When you hit the square to open recent apps if you click and drag upwards you will see a clear option that closes all recent app in the list. I don't know if it's new or not but I have only recently noticed it in the last week or so.

The recent Marshmallow upgrade provides a "Clear" option. You have3 to clear one app manually and the "Clear" option shows. If selected it will close all of the recent apps.
