Headphone problem

I've had my Nexus 6 for almost 2 years. I've been really pleased with it and taken good care of it. Underneath it's protection it's in practically new condition on the outside!

I recently got some lovely new expensive earphones that I was really pleased with.

Recently I started to get a random problem with my headphone volume. I can see the volume reducing to silent on my screen without me touching it. Now it is constant. I can't use my headphones at all! My jawbone Bluetooth works fine though. It isn't a problem with the headphones as they work perfectly with hubby's N5.

Please can anyone help me or do I need it repairing?

Just as a check, does the same happen if you use a different set of headphones? That would absolutely confirm that the problem was with the phone.

It sounds like something is emulating the effect of pressing a volume control button on the headphones, which I presume that a bad contact could do (I don't know how in-line volume controls actually work, but it has to be either sending or interrupting an electrical signal through one of the contacts or between 2 of them). Just to check for trivial causes, is there any dirt of fluff in the socket? You could try blowing compressed air into the headphone jack, or maybe using a lens brush (not a toothbrush or anything remotely stiff because you don't want to damage the jack) to see whether you could dislodge anything that is in there.
