CAT S60 Disassembly – Teardown

I went in the pool and ocean with my device and made a mistake of opening the SIM lid while the phone was still wet. After a couple of hours the phone was on but the screen was dead. I left it to dry and waited for the battery to discharge. It was time to open the phone and see what the damage was. Since there was no advice online how to tear down CAT S60 I will try to help out with my photos.

Firs step is to take a sharp scalpel and to remove the back cover with a pattern. It is held with some double sided tape. Be careful around the SIM card slot not to break the back cover.

Once the back cover is removed there are 8 philips head screws that you need to remove. Once again sharp scalpel is a tool to take. Back cover can be removed carefully. It is still held by some fome type glue and plastic clips.

From here you can remove the battery not to make a short circuit. After that there are five flat cables, one coax cable and one screw to remove the main board.

The bottom board with the speaker is held with couple of plastic clips. The speaker is glued with the same "foam glue" as the back cover. There is one screw and couple of connectors that need to be removed to take it all out.

Main board with the cameras, processor and the rest can be taken apart as well. The thermal camera can be taken out from its connector after removing a thin metal cover. SIM car slots, front, back camera as well.

Mine problem was some corrosion on one chip that can be seen on the pictures if you look closely. I managed to clean it with distilled water, contact cleaner and alcohol. I heated it with a hot air soldering station as well to resolder the chip and assembled the phone. After connecting it to a charger the screen started to work again and the phone is back to full functionality.

I am not sure how water tight it will be after taking it apart and putting it back together again. It seams that we still have to wait for a true water resistant phone.

There is a lot of room inside the phone to put in a wireless charger and solder it to a micro usb connector. Since i will be selling mine i will not do this. But it would be a good idea for CAT to put a wireless charger and remove the micro usb connector. Since the ear phone jack is hard to use with the cover over it it can be removed as well.

Today I tear down my S60 just hours ago.

Mine problem is the thermal camera don't work well.

if i turn the camera from location A to B. the camera always remains the shadows of location A.

It is really really really terrible!

And more than that. the temperature become insane. it shows my hand is over 40℃. my refrigerator is over 20℃ inside.

After i tear down the thermal sensor and put it back. it goes well for just minutes. After that. insane again..

Now this problem is like a circle. It happens again and again.

sad.
