[Recovery] Twrp v3 for Lg Aristo [metropc/t-mobile]

This is seriously annoying. TWRP crashes for me whenever I try and boot into it. It unpacks the script, then restarts the phone and I can't get back to TWRP without going through the entire process again (and, of course it fails again). I'm trying to just flash the kdz and start over with the new build.

GRRRR

this is not the buld or twrp having a problem, its the process your using. follow op instructions closely is the only advice i can give, when done properly theres its fully functional.

thats data decryption bro, have to decrypt data after flashing twrp after flashing no verity opt and after flashing super su, only use cmd line to boot to twrp for reasons mentioned many many many times :) please read alittle. othes have had this problem and its been solved 2-3 times with detail.

That was my bad. I was using fastboot to try and boot into recovery instead of adb.

Now, I need to figure out a way to get LG UP to recognize my phone...

Twrp on the first post is working 100% except you should use adb or reboot app from the play store to boot into it... i never post something for public use before testing it.
it's just you and some others who don't follow the instructions correctly it's why you are having such problems with it....

Theres 1 other lg Aristo thread that covers many things ( i posted recent tutorial should be on last page)

It's the same build i send you yesterday , do you extract the zip first before flashing

yes yes, doesnt have the mta-inf file so it doesnt flash zipped up :)

hi there! Just got this from, coming from a Note 5. Hardships had to cutdown some of my budget lol.

I'm intrigued by this thread, I have helped develop a Note 7 port onto the Note 5 for sprint which is on XDA and i'm considered a contributer. I don't know a ton but I can help.

The only process that seems to confuse me is when attempting to decrypt and flash root is that you format data. I know on the note 5 formatting data typically wiped whatever ROM you were using and you had to reflash another rom. I assume it's the same here? or does it work slightly different on this phone? Maybe i'm thinking too much lol but before I try any method just wanted to clear that up!

Thanks for the development thus far and if you're seeking help i'm more than willing.

If you don't know what dm-verity is...

I wondered what it is. Why did I never have to deal with it before? Well, it was first implemented in Android 4.4. Since my last phone was 4.1, I felt a little less out of it...

Anyway, here's a good write-up (xda) if you want to know what dm-verity is & why it has to be disabled:

Got into TWRP & flashed no-verity-opt-encrypt-2.1.zip.
I can't find a way back into TWRP. When I start the phone, I get msg: "Your device software cannot be checked for corruption. Lock the bootloader". When I got that screen before flashing no-verity zip, it went into TWRP, but now it goes to factory reset/restore backup options.

What should I try next?

It wasn't from lack of trying to follow the steps in the OP or reading thru the thread! I just managed to screw up anyway... o_0

Sorry... I might not have been clear enough

It says:
6. Tap on Install. Now, navigate your phone’s storage and select ‘no-verity-opt-encrypt-2.1.zip’. Finally swipe the ‘Swipe to confirm Flash’ button on the bottom of the screen.
7. The flashing process will merely take a few seconds. And when it’s done, follow the same method to flash the root package – SR1-SuperSU-v2.78-SR1-20160915123031.zip

When it finished flashing the no-verity zip, I was no longer in TWRP & I can't get back into it so I can flash super su. I tried adb command "[ adb reboot recovery ] in adb terminal to boot into twrp." It isn't recognizing the phone w/ adb command. I get: error: no devices/emulators found. If I type [ adb devices ], I get "List of devices attached", but there's no device name listed
Fastboot works OK, though

EDIT:
Looking at earlier post by Nash98, I may have the same problem. After TWRP wipe & install of no-verity zip, phone attached via USB & turned on is not specifically recognized... shows in Devices Manager as Andriod Bootloader Interface. Am trying to figure out what driver might be needed

I guess it isn't the same problem as Nash98's... The computer sees the phone in Device Manager as "LG Android ADB Device".

Feeling stupider & stupider. Wasn't getting anywhere so I reflashed TWRP & got "Okay" success msg on cmd prompt. Did steps with keys in OP but couldn't boot to TWRP (must be doing something wrong). Reflashed & tried again a couple of times-- no luck. Reloaded restore & going back to bed for now  :p

I don't know that much & may be misunderstanding what is happening or calling things by the wrong name. I'll try explaining in more detail. OP directions are in italics...

-- after getting into fastboot I:
"open a command prompt and type "fastboot flash recovery <path_to_recovery.img>” without the quotation marks."
The cmd prompt always indicated that it worked (msg: "sending recovery Okay, writing recovery Okay, finished"). At this point, I thought the TWRP recovery was flashed, and the next part would be accessing TWRP in order to wipe/format (& then flash the 2 zip files). So the next step is:
"unplug the usb cable and power it off by taking out the battery and putting it back in."

Next comes the problem part. I must be doing something wrong. I thought the purpose here is to access TWRP.
The OP says:
"HOLD VOLUME DOWN + POWER until you see the LG logo and then temporarily release the POWER button, immediately pressing and holding it back down until you see the white prompt screen."
At this point, one of 2 things happens
1) I get a white screen that says "Factory data reset". Do I want FR? Yes/No. It requires answer to move on, but entering yes/no requires releasing Vol down button. The next screen tells me to relock bootloader. Then it goes to LG logo screen & factory reset.
OR
2) A couple of times, Team Win screen opened. (Don't know what I did different.) Some script went flowing through, then it quickly sent me to the LG logo screen & factory reset.

Major confusion at this point. OP says the [volume down + power] buttons can only be used the first time. Then it gives alternatives to boot into TWRP either by using app that requires root (unrooted, so not an option), or:
"u can use adb command type [ adb reboot recovery ] in adb terminal to boot into twrp".
I went into fastboot & entered command. Always got msg "no devices/emulators found." I've tried several times. So I can't boot into TWRP in order to flash the no-verity & SuperSU zips.

I've repeated these steps several times. Am I reading it wrong?

There is no adb daemon running in that mode. Only fastboot commands will work from there. When the OP says use "adb reboot recovery", that's from a normally booted and running device after all the other steps had already been performed and you have a working TWRP.

Thanks-- it helps to narrow the possible blind alleys. Contrary to popular belief, I did read or misread the OP several times both before & during process. I've flashed recoveries in the past... Didn't realize how much I don't know. :p

I must be doing something wrong here:
"HOLD VOLUME DOWN + POWER until you see the LG logo and then temporarily release the POWER button, immediately pressing and holding it back down until you see the white prompt screen."
It sounds simple enough. I actually did get to the main TWRP screen once, did the wipe & flashed no-verity-opt-encrypt-2.1.zip. I couldn't get back in so I couldn't flash SR1-SuperSU-v2.78-SR1-20160915123031.zip. I've done a factory reset & started over a few times but never got back to the main TWRP screen again. A few times a Team Win screen came up, ran some script & then disappeared. I just know it's some minor stupid thing.

EDIT:
When I hold [Power + Volume], LG logo comes up. I release & repress Power, continuing to hold down Vol down key. Next a white screen comes up. I'm not sure if it's the white screen in the directions or not because it asks if a Factory reset is wanted, Yes/No. I've tried 2 approaches here:

1) The directions say to answer Yes twice to the white screen. I didn't think we want a factory reset, but said Yes both times to see what happens. Must release [Power + Volume] keys to do so. I get a 2nd LG logo & msg to relock bootloader. Then T-Mobile comes up.
OR
2) In case it's the wrong white screen & I was supposed to know we don't want FR, I continue holding the buttons & wait a while to see if it moves beyond the FR screen to another screen or TWRP. Nothing happens

I feel dumb asking... What sequence of screens should come up after the 1st LG logo?
