Iron filings? Maybe it looked like iron filings, but it would make more sense if it was graphite flakes. It has been a while since I had a motorcycle, but we used to use chain lube that was graphite with a dispersant that would evaporate so there was no oily residue to collect dirt (similar to Slide-All, but graphite instead of teflon powder).
