Help Android 7 and Volume of Ringtone and Notifications

It seems that the sound settings have changed with Android 7. Before, there was a different volume setting for ringtone and notifications. I could set the notification volume to silent and still set the ringtone volume to not be silent. Is this still possible with Android 7? I cannot seem to get it to work. I use a sound app that automatically sets different volume levels for everything at a push of a button. Ever since Android 7, whenever the app sets notifications to silent, but ringtones to not, the ringtone either does not play or plays for like a second and then is silent.

With Android 7, how do you set the notification sound to silent and ringtone to not be silent? I'm not looking for an app. I would like to know where in the Android settings screens I can go to and what to set in order to do this.

I believe you're correct - with Nougat, the Ringtone and Notification audio streams have been blended into one, so you can no longer control them separately. The best that I can recommend would be to set the Default Notification Ringtone (Settings > Sound) to None, and then do the same for any apps which manage their own notification sounds. It's not ideal, but it will allow your phone to make noise for incoming calls without beeping at every text message.

In that case, why not use the built-in Do Not Disturb feature? You can set it so that only calls come through while everything else is silenced.

I'm using this now, but I'm still not too satisfied with it. I don't mind getting notifications. I just don't want the sound to come on. When I turn on the do not disturb feature, it doesn't notify me at all. I sent an email to myself and nothing. When I turned DND off, still no notification.

How do you have Settings > Sound > Do not disturb > Block visual disturbances set?

Regardless of how it's configured, DND should have no impact on the device receiving notifications - these settings just control how intrusive they should be. The notification should appear in your notification area regardless of any DND settings. If that's not happening, there may be something else to look at.

DND doesn't work. I still get notifications while using DND. I did set it to allow priority calls only and non-call notifications still sound.

Anything listed if you go to Settings > Notifications and switch the dropdown to Overrides Do Not Disturb?

Can you give some examples of what non-call notifications are still making noise?

I think that's the solution. My FB Messenger, WhatsApp and Messages app all have Overrides DND set. I've turned it off. I also turned on Overrides DND for my phone app. Just tested it and my phone rings when I call it, but text messages do not sound the notification.

This was a big change from how notifications work before. I never noticed the new notifications section in the settings. I rarely get calls when I'm asleep and fortunately, I didn't miss any. By the time I realised the change, it must have been at least several months if not longer. Thank you, very much for your help. I've been pulling my hair out about this for weeks.
