The 1st music video I ever saw.

Back in the 70s Dale Dorman a local radio DJ on WRKO (When they played music) hosted a music video show on one of the local UHF stations clearly pre-dating MTV (When they showed music videos).

Norman Greenbaum's Spirit In The Sky was the 1st one I recall seeing and YouTube has a re-mastered version of that very Music Video.
linkin park is the best music band in my eyes. watch it.

Why on earth did so many people not like them, or am I thinking of a similar group from back in the late 90s, early aughts? Anywho, I was probably a pre+teen back when "Spirit in the Sky" came out. How old were you when "In the End" debuted?

Folks this thread is about memories not musical merit so please don't be judgemental.

"It's hard" to say with any absolute certainty.........

But odds are quite good that for me it was D.A. Pennebaker / Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues

Some point to it as among the first true music "performance videos", (beyond just captured performance footage and a light show.) While it is notable, and deserves to be on the short list; I suspect there are other strong contenders out there for the title, would love to be turned on to them.

In the more modern / M-Tv era; Unlikely the first ones I saw, but some of the earliest ones that I "remember remembering".

Adam Ant - Stand and Deliver
Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime

Both quite strong, imho.......But so many of them were dang good at that time; The average music video was way above average, at that time..........Could obviously be an entire thread to it's self, (hint, hint Bobby.):D

I sometimes wonder if Linkin Park is actually a band, or is really a designer brand. I see a lot of Linkin Park branded merchandise, sometimes misspelled at the night markets, "Lenkin Park" etc., but I can't recall if I've ever heard their music here.

Might ask some of my students in next few days, if they know what Linkin Park actually is. :D

As soon as I hit "POST" above, I remembered what may be a more accurate response to "first music video you saw".

Perhaps not a true "music video", but close enough, and left a strong impression; And still fun after all these years. (Despite wildly racist, offensive moments).

A little research might peg the exact year; But the basic facts of what may be among my earliest childhood memories:
  • It definitely would have been out at the old drive-in theatre, almost directly under final approach to the airport.
  • I definitely was supposed to be asleep; Not standing up in the "way-back" section of the Volkswagen squareback, in my footie pajamas, peering out the front windshield.
  • And I definitely was supposed to be breathing exclusively the "clean air" in the back; Not the clouds of dope smoke up front, in the "adults only" section of the car.
To this day, I still have a spot in my heart for songs with great "outtro" sections; Guitar work that sails off majestically over the horizon, relentlessly into the cosmic distance.

And PS: The squareback would definitely have been a 1967; An "S" model, with twin Solex carburetors and high compression pistons from the factory; In 1968, one could buy the "E" model....... Among the first commercially available electronic fuel injection systems, Bosch "D-Jetronic". The Wikipedia page is skimpy on detail, but a fascinating subject worthy of entire volumes.:)

Yeah, I was a fairly impressionable little kid anyhow, and circumstances conspired that night in such a way that this video left a serious mark!;)

Around 1980, there was some videos being shown on some cable channel but I cannot remember the channel. It was at least a year before MTV.

They showed Devo's video (cover of the Rolling Stones) I can't get no satisfaction. I thought to myself WTF is this music and why are they showing this strange video. LOL

I vaguely remember Split Enz's "I Got You" which is an iconic video, IMHO, around this time as well. MTV was not out yet.

(Also, this was on in the daytime on a weekend so it was not USA Network's Night Flight, which came out around that time)
